Metaphor 76 /110: The Clouds Dispersed by the Wind 

The venerable Master Huijing teaches us that reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha even just ten times is enough to ensure our rebirth in the Land of Bliss. Just as clouds cannot remain motionless in the sky when the wind blows, our karmic obstacles will be quickly dispelled. 

By reciting “Namo Amituofo”, the name of the Buddha of Infinite and Unobstructed Light, all of the negative karma accumulated through countless kalpas, are eradicated instantly. One gets to sit on a lotus throne and be reborn in the Land of Bliss. (Just as when the light of Amitabha’s Name manifests, the darkness of negative karma is banished at once) It is just like when the wind

blows, clouds cannot remain still in the sky. The powerful wind of Amitabha’s Name scatters the clouds, leaving the sky clear for miles around. 

76/110. 風拂雲喻 

十念亦生極樂國，風拂雲時，何雲滯天。 

念無量光明、無礙光明的「南無阿彌陀佛」，千年、萬年、無量億劫所累積的黑 暗重罪當下就消除了。所以「光來暗除，何暗留室」，罪業當下通通消除，當下 坐金蓮台，而往生極樂世界，所以「風拂雲時，何雲滯天」，強風吹雲使得當下 晴空萬里。

30. Bodhisattva Vasubandhu’s Gatha of Aspiration for Rebirth in the Treatise on Rebirth: 

“I aspire to be born in the Land of Bliss.” (The Gate of Aspiration—the meaning of taking refuge and entrusting oneself.) 

“Everything that sentient beings aspire to and delight in can be fulfilled there. Therefore, I aspire to be born in that land, the land of Amitabha Buddha.” 

Master Tanluan’s Commentary on the Treatise on Rebirth: 

“Simply by believing in Amitabha Buddha and aspiring to be reborn in the Pure Land, one will attain rebirth there. A person who resolutely aspires to rebirth there, will gain that rebirth, and join the Assembly of Assured Enlightenment. I aspire to be born there. I take refuge in and pay homage to Amitabha Buddha.” 

Master Tanluan’s Hymns in Praise of Amitabha Buddha: 

“All who hear the Name of Amitabha, 

and rejoice with faith upon hearing it, 

even those with a single moment of sincere mind, 

dedicate their merits and aspire to be born there— 

shall all attain rebirth.”

30. 天親《往生論願生偈》：「願生安樂國(作願門，歸命之意)。眾生所願樂，一 切能滿足。故我願生彼，阿彌陀佛國。」 

曇鸞《往生論註》：「信佛因緣，願生淨土。願往生者，皆得往生。剋念願生，亦 得往生，即入正定聚。我願往生歸命禮。」 

曇鸞《讚阿彌陀佛偈》：「諸聞阿彌陀德號，信心歡喜慶所聞，乃暨一念至心者 ， 回向願生皆得往。」

Answer to Q51 : (continued) 

When we speak of “faith, aspiration, and practice,” although all of us aspire to be reborn in the Pure Land, if what we believe is not the teaching and doctrine of this Dharma gate, then our faith is different. When our faith is different, our practice will naturally be different as well. 

As for the question, “Does striving to attain samadhi involve an element of self-power?”—not necessarily. If someone has an other-power mind and recites Namo Amitabha Buddha one hundred thousand times a day, while aspiring to attain Buddha-recitation samadhi, that is still other-power. Conversely, if someone has a self-power mind and recites Namo Amitabha Buddha only once or twice a day, without undertaking any particular practice, that is still self-power. 

Among fellow practitioners, some set a goal of exclusively reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha tens of thousands of times each day. They do so because they are afraid of becoming lax and hope to encourage themselves to recite more diligently. After all, when they are not exclusively reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha , their minds are still filled with scattered thoughts and delusions.

With a correct understanding of these matters, we will not develop unnecessary worries or attachments.

續答 Q51: 

我們說「信願行」，雖然都是願生，如果信的不是我們這個教理，就是信不同； 信不同，行就會不同。 

「努力追求入三昧是不是有自力的成份？」這不一定。如果是他力心的人，一 天念佛十萬聲，追求念佛三昧，一樣是他力；如果是自力心的人，一天念一聲 兩聲，沒有修什麼行，那也是自力。同修中有的人規定自己一天念幾萬聲，是因為怕懈怠，希望精進念佛，因為平常不念佛還是妄想雜念。如果對這些有 正確的了解，就不會產生其他不必要的掛礙。

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (II) 

淨土釋疑(二) 

Question 51: Can we put it this way? When practicing this Dharma gate, we do not need to, nor should we, strive for the highest tier of rebirth; or work especially hard at reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha until we attain one-mindedness or samadhi. Rather, we should simply have faith, aspire for rebirth, and exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha. In addition, because we continue to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, our faith and aspiration naturally deepen. Is it enough to simply let this process unfold naturally? Also, does striving to attain samadhi involve an element of self-power? 

Answer to Q51: Yes, that is correct. In other words, according to our individual capacities, we recite Namo Amitabha Buddha to whatever extent we are able. However, even if our recitation reaches a certain level, we should not think that this makes Amitabha’s deliverance more effective, makes our rebirth more secure, or gives us a higher tier of rebirth. Conversely, even if our recitation does not reach any particular state, we should not feel inferior, think that our rebirth is uncertain, or that we will attain a lower tier of rebirth. If we hold such ideas, then we are no longer practitioners of this Dharma gate.

第51問：可不可以這樣說：學這個法門不是、也不須要追求上品上生，或努力 加倍的念佛直到一心不亂或三昧定，而只是信願行，一直念佛；也因為一直念 佛，信願又輾轉加深。是不是這樣自然而然的運作下去就可以了？ 另外，努 力追求入三昧，這樣是不是有自力的成份? 

答：是這樣沒有錯。也就是說，隨自己的根機能念佛到什麼地步就到什麼 地步，即使念到某一個地步，也不要認為這樣對阿彌陀佛的救度更有幫助、往生更可靠、品位更高超。即使沒有到任何地步，也不要自卑，認為自己往生 不定或品位不高。若有這樣的觀念，就不是我們這個法門的行人了。

Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teaching about “The Fear of Death” 

慧淨法師之「 死的恐怖」 

No one, not even a sage, can escape death. Death is an entirely natural and uncontrived part of life. The great sage, Shakyamuni Buddha, entered parinirvana calmly and peacefully. 

死雖聖人亦不可避。死是極為無造作的事。大聖釋尊，從容入寂。
