Wonderful Metaphors in the Pure Land School

Metaphor 65: A Fire without Smoke

[Master Tanluan says,] “If a person wishes to be reborn in the Pure Land simply out of a desire for the peace and happiness there, it would be like seeking waterless ice or smokeless fire. How could that be possible?”

This means that, if a person doubts the teaching of Shakyamuni Buddha regarding Amitabha’s deliverance to the Pure Land; but, still desires to be reborn in that land for the pleasure of its peace and joy, his efforts will be in vain. This is because what he seeks is nonexistent, such as ice without water or a fire that doesn’t produce smoke.

So, what do the two metaphors of waterless ice and smokeless fire illustrate? They illustrate the idea that seeking rebirth in the Pure Land without believing in Amitabha’s deliverance is futile. Just as ice cannot exist without water and fire cannot burn without producing smoke, rebirth in the Pure Land cannot be attained without believing in Amitabha’s salvation.

Logically, if one wishes to be reborn in the Land of Bliss, one must first believe in the Pure Land and in Amitabha’s deliverance. Without such belief, who would you rely on for salvation, and where could you go for rebirth? A desire for rebirth that is merely driven by personal satisfaction, rather than the faithful acceptance of Amitabha’s deliverance, is akin to seeking something that doesn’t exist.

This is why Master Tanluan says, “How could a fool who slanders Shakyamuni Buddha’s teaching possibly aspire to be reborn in Amitabha Buddha’s land?”

Wonderful Metaphors in the Pure Land School

Metaphor 64: A Blind Turtle and a Piece of Driftwood (continued)

There is an oft-quoted saying that goes like this: “Contemplating the unspeakable pains in hells motivates us to generate bodhicitta.” This means that, because we are mindful of the agonies in the hell realms, we should resolve to practice the Dharma for achieving Buddhahood, to save all sentient beings from samsara. We wish all sentient beings, including ourselves and our families through countless lifetimes, to be forever liberated from samsara. No more suffering in hells, no more suffering in the three evil realms.

In the context of the Pure Land Dharma path, that saying will be modified to read: contemplating the unspeakable pains in hell motivates us to aspire to rebirth in the Land of Bliss, and to exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha.

In addition, Master Shandao’s “In Praise of Pratyutpanna” has the following two Gathas (p. 645 of the Complete Works of Master Shandao) which also stress the importance of being wary of the wretchedness of hells and having the aspiration for rebirth:

Always contemplate the torment of hells,

Aspiring to be reborn in the Pure Land.

Vow to commit no karma that leads to the three wretched realms, Having no desire for human or celestial joys.

A sudden recollection of the Buddha’s teaching that the sufferings in hells are unspeakable and ceaseless,

Makes me never want to forget, even for a moment, about the eternal bliss in the Land of Peace and Joy.

Amitabha’s Pure Land is an unconditioned realm of nirvana,

Making it the best place for the ultimate liberation from all sufferings and for the attainment of enlightenment.

Hearing of the miseries in the hell realms, especially the ceaseless pains and sufferings in Avici Hell; we become more resolute in our aspiration for rebirth in the Land of Bliss.

一切時中憶地獄,發起增上往生心;

忽憶地獄長時苦,不捨須臾忘安樂;

Wonderful Metaphors in the Pure Land School

Metaphor 64: A Blind Turtle and a Piece of Driftwood

In “The Purpose of Life” (p. 35), there is a passage about how difficult and rare it is to be born as a human being: “Only in the human realm can one hear the Dharma.”

Therefore, the human realm offers the best conditions for ordinary beings to be liberated from all afflictions.

However, Shakyamuni Buddha also says, “Human form is hard to attain. Being born in the human realm is extremely rare.”

According to the Samyukta-agama Sutra, the Buddha told a famous story known as “A Blind Turtle and a Piece of Driftwood” to illustrate this point.

There was once a blind turtle living at the bottom of a deep ocean. The turtle has an infinitely long lifespan. It comes up to the surface of the ocean only once every 100 years. In this vast ocean is a piece of driftwood with a small hole in its center. The size of the hole is just big enough for the head of the turtle to poke through it.

What are the odds on the blind turtle encountering the driftwood and getting its head through that hole? It may take a billion or even a trillion years for that to happen. However, being reborn in the human realm from the three wretched realms is even more difficult than this.

Similarly, the Nirvana Sutra says, “The human body is rare and precious. The number of those who fall into the three wretched realms is as huge as the whole world, while that of those who are reborn as humans is just like specks of dust on my [Shakyamuni Buddha’s] fingernails.”

(to be continued tomorrow)

Wonderful Metaphors in the Pure Land School

Metaphor 63: Pierced by a Spear Three Hundred Times a Day

We hear about the incessant suffering in hell. How severe is that suffering? This is the question posed by one of Shakyamuni Buddha’s disciples.

The Buddha replied with a question, “Can you imagine the pain and suffering of being pierced by a spear one hundred times each in the morning, at noon, and at night; resulting in broken bones and torn flesh?

The disciple answered: “It is hard to imagine the pain caused by being pierced even just once by a spear.”

At this time, the Buddha picked up a small pebble and put it in his palm, using it as a metaphor, and said, “If the pain of being pierced by a spear three hundred times every day is likened to such a small stone, then the real suffering in hell is as huge as the snowy Himalayan mountains.

Such suffering is unimaginable.

If we truly believe in karmic retribution, the existence of the Six Realms of samsara, the punishment of hell, and the indescribable agony of Avici Hell, we would be deeply vigilant in our actions, avoiding evil deeds and doing good. We would also make it our lifelong aim to find a good teacher and the right Dharma, to attain liberation in this life. We understand that the purpose of practicing the

Dharma is to end the cycle of birth and death, and we also know that we would inevitably fall into hell if we were not liberated from samsara. We would therefore not delay our Dharma practice until the next life.

Wonderful Metaphors in the Pure Land School

Metaphor 62: Born as Cattle – The Karmic Forces Behind all Rebirths

All Rebirths are Determined by Karmic Forces.

The actions of sentient beings in past lives determine their births in their present lives. If one has created the karma of cattle in past lives, then one is born as cattle in the present life; with their appearance and temperaments. If one has created the karma of a pig, then one is born with the appearance and character of a pig. These various rebirths are due to various past karmas.

What type of rebirth will the karma of practicing Amitabha-recitation result in? The answer is - rebirth in the Pure Land by transformation in the Lotus Flowers of Enlightenment. In other words, this rebirth is the outcome of the merits and virtues accumulated through the good karma of reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha.

Wonderful Metaphors in the Pure Land School

Metaphor 61: All Rivers Taste the Same after Flowing into the Sea

“The water of the Zihe and the Shengshui rivers in the Shandong Province taste different when inland. However, once they have entered the sea, their difference disappears, and they have the same salty taste. Isn’t that amazing?”

By the same token, although the aptitudes and capabilities of us ordinary beings in the Saha World are all different, (some of us are virtuous, others are evil, some are bright, others dull), as long as we exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, we will all be reborn in the Pure Land. Our rebirth, through transformation in the Lotus Flowers of Enlightenment, is due to the augmentative karma of the Dharma Path of Amitabha-recitation.

We all take on the same form after rebirth in the Pure Land, having the same physical characteristics and features.

Wonderful Metaphors in the Pure Land School

Metaphor 60: Genes for Perfect Enlightenment (5 /5 continued)

The Infinite Life Sutra states: “Exclusively seeking the pure and undefiled Dharma in order to benefit all beings.” Where is this “pure and undefiled Dharma” to be found? It is within the phrase Namo Amitabha Buddha. This phrase is bestowed upon sentient beings for them to recite, enabling them to be fully endowed with the pure Dharma. The sutra also says: “Causing all beings to accomplish merits and virtues,” enabling those who exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha to accomplish the merit for rebirth and Buddhahood. Again it says: “Opening the treasury of the Dharma for all beings, widely bestowing the treasure of merits.” For the sentient beings of the ten directions, the treasury of the Dharma for perfect Buddhahood has been fulfilled and its vast ocean of merits bestowed upon them.

Therefore, Vasubandhu, in his Treatise on Rebirth, said: “It enables one to quickly receive the infinite ocean of merit-treasure.” When beings of the ten directions encounter the Pure Land teaching, they can, in this very lifetime, swiftly become fully endowed with the great ocean of merit. Thus it is said, “the Dharma Body suddenly manifests; and is therefore called transformation-birth.”

Wonderful Metaphors in the Pure Land School

Metaphor 60: Genes for Perfect Enlightenment (4/ 5 continued)

The Sudden Manifestation of the Dharma Body

Fourth, “the Dharma Body suddenly manifests; therefore it is called transformation-birth.” Upon rebirth in the Land of Bliss, one is born by transformation in the flower of Perfect Enlightenment. Without relying on cultivation or severing of delusions, the Dharma Body instantly appears. Like beings born by transformation in the world, one suddenly comes into being from non-being, inwardly and outwardly complete, and lacking nothing.

Rebirth in the Land of Bliss is “birth by transformation in the flower of Perfect Enlightenment.” It does not depend on personal cultivation or on cutting off delusions. It does not rely upon eliminating the delusion of views, thought, dust-like delusion, or fundamental ignorance. Thus, one is naturally born by transformation, and the Dharma Body immediately manifests. It is like transformation-birth within the three realms and six paths: suddenly appearing

from non-existence, fully endowed inwardly and outwardly, without any deficiency.

The Infinite Life Sutra says: “Within the seven-jeweled lotus flowers, they are naturally born by transformation. In a brief instant, their bodily marks, radiance, wisdom, and merits are fully accomplished, just like those of the bodhisattvas.” Although in this world one may be an ordinary being, once one exclusively recites Namo Amitabha Buddha and attains rebirth, the external bodily radiance and the inner wisdom and virtues are accomplished in a single instant — equal to those of great bodhisattvas.

Whether it is the Land of Ultimate Bliss, the lotus of Amitabha’s Perfect Enlightenment, or the six-character phrase Namo Amitabha Buddha; all have been accomplished by Amitabha for the sake of sentient beings in the ten directions.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Wonderful Metaphors in the Pure Land School

Metaphor 60: Genes for Perfect Enlightenment (3 /5 continued)

Rebirth [in the Pure Land] is a Birthless Birth

Second, rebirth [in the Pure Land] is a birthless birth; which is referred to as a “birth by transformation”. This type of birth is brought about by Amitabha’s pure Primal Vow. It is a birth transformed from within the Buddha’s Flower of

Enlightenment, not one of the illusory births in samsara. It is a non-birth that we speak of as a transformation birth.

Non-arising Yet Manifesting Birth

Third, “non-arising yet manifesting birth”; this is called transformation birth. The flower of Perfect Enlightenment blossoms and gives birth; it is unborn and undying. Though unborn, it manifests birth, with all marks and characteristics perfectly present. The adornment of these marks is itself the Dharma Body. Because it is unborn yet manifests birth, it is called transformation-birth.

Amitabha Buddha is the Dharma Body, neither arising nor ceasing. Therefore, the lotus of Amitabha’s perfect Enlightenment is likewise unborn and undying. Though unborn, it manifests birth, and all features are perfectly complete. As Tanluan said, “The adornments of marks and characteristics are precisely the Dharma Body.” Hence, “non-arising yet manifesting birth; it is called transformation birth.”

(to be continued tomorrow)

Metaphor 60: Genes for Perfect Enlightenment (2 /5 continued)

Those who are born by transformation are practitioners who have faith in and accept Amitabha’s deliverance, and exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha. They are reborn by transformation, emerging from the lotus flower of Amitabha’s perfect enlightenment and beholding the Buddha at once.

The other type of birth is womb-born. According to the Larger Sutra, those who doubt the Buddha’s wisdom and deliverance are born in womb-like lotus buds. However, they believe in retribution and reward for their actions, have generated bodhicitta, practiced the Six Paramitas, and dedicated such merits to rebirth in the Pure Land.

As Bodhisattva Nagarjuna points out in his Chapter on the Easy Path, “If one nurtures meritorious roots but doubts [Amitabha’s wisdom], the lotus flower in which one is reborn [in the Pure Land] will not immediately open. In contrast, if

one’s faith [in Amitabha] is pure, one’s flower of rebirth immediately blooms and one sees Amitabha.”

Metaphor 60: Genes for Perfect Enlightenment (1 /5)

According to genetics, our parents’ genes pass on to us and future generations. With Amitabha, the perfectly enlightened one as our parent, and through transformation birth via the Buddha’s Lotus Flowers of Enlightenment, what else would we become except perfectly enlightened beings? There are four implications of rebirth in the Land of Bliss by transformation:

Rebirth [in the Pure Land within a womb] is utterly different from a womb-birth [in the world of samsara].

First: Rebirth in the Pure Land is not a birth from a womb (as in the case of mammals in samsara). The Infinite Life Sutra refers to two kinds of birth in the Land of Bliss: womb-born and rebirth by transformation.

The former, however, is unlike birth from a womb as in the Three Domains and Six Realms, where beings are born in one of the four ways: in wombs, eggs, moisture, or by transformation. Those who are womb-born in the Land of Bliss refers to those reborn within a lotus flower, without being able to behold the Buddha or hear the Dharma for quite a while. Metaphorically it is like a baby still dwelling inside its mother’s womb and not yet ready to be born. The lotus flower in this case is called a lotus womb or lotus palace.

Why are some of the inhabitants of the Land of Bliss womb-born and the others born by transformation?

(to be continued tomorrow)

Metaphor 59: Pundarika Flowers
Amitabha-reciters are praised as “ pundarika flowers” in The Contemplation of Infinite Life Sutra, it says, “You should know that those who recite Amitabha’s Name are like pundarika flowers among humankind.”

A Pundarika is a big white lotus flower with a thousand petals. It is the most rare and precious flower. The Nirvana Sutra says, “[Shakyamuni] Buddha is also known as a pundarika flower.” This means that by exclusively reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha in our present life, we become as rare and precious as a white lotus flower.

Master Shandao explained that “a pundarika flower among humankind” means “a good , splendid, superior, precious, and most extraordinary person”. Such a person surpasses other sentient beings of the Three Domains and the Six Realms and is no longer an ordinary being trapped in samsara. He will surely attain Buddhahood, just like Shakyamuni Buddha, our great Pundarika. Amitabha-reciters are thus exalted as being like pundarika flowers.

Metaphor 58: Amitabha’s Name is Like a Credit Card

Recite Amitabha’s Name with Faith

The institution in Taiwan that owns the most money is the Central Bank. If Amitabha’s merits and virtues, as contained in “Namo Amituofo,” are the equivalent of the reserve in the Central Bank, we Amitabha-reciters, who take refuge in Amitabha Buddha, are analogous to creditors entitled to the money in the Bank.

Metaphorically, exclusively reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha acts like a credit card issued by the central bank, allowing those who recite unrestricted withdrawals of the merits. Such merits not only eliminate our karmic obstructions, but they also help us connect with others through dedication of the merits.

Master Shandao says, “Amitabha Buddha made a profound and weighty vow — to embrace sentient beings in all directions with both his light and his name, in order to induce them to recite with faith.”

In short, Amitabha’s name has been given to sentient beings for our benefit , whether in the present life or beyond. All we need to do is accept the gift, believe in it, and exclusively recite it.

Metaphor 57: Light Dispels Darkness

As Master Tanluan says in his Commentary on the Treatise on Rebirth, “Suppose there is a room that has been dark for a thousand years. If sunlight enters the room , the room will instantly become bright. Could the darkness refuse to leave because it has been there for a thousand years?

The question to contemplate is whether the sun has risen. If the answer is yes, we know for sure that the darkness is gone.

The important issue is whether Bhikhu Dharmakara became a Buddha. If he did, we should know that he has accumulated all the merits and virtues necessary for our rebirth in the Pure Land. If we take refuge in Amitabha Buddha, aspire to be reborn in his Land of Bliss, and exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha

throughout our lives, then our rebirth and achievement of Buddhahood are instantly guaranteed. It is effortless and not contrived. Hence the saying, “ Both rebirth and non-retrogression are assured in the present lifetime.” This is spontaneous and natural, and accords with Amitabha Buddha’s fundamental vow.

As Master Shandao says in his In Praise of Pratyutpanna, “Don’t ask if Amitabha embraces us or not. We should just focus our minds on exclusively reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha. Once we have resolved to be reborn in the Pure Land, Amitabha Buddha and the sacred assembly, under splendid canopies, will naturally come to carry us to the Land of Bliss at the end of our lives.”

Master Shandao also has this to say in his In Praise of Dharma Practices, “Exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha without a shred of doubt, regardless of one’s offenses and blessings, whether for a long or short time.”

Metaphor 56: Amitabha-recitation is Like a Sunrise

When the sun rises, darkness in all directions is dispelled.

When the moon emerges, waters of the dharma realms reflect it. At daybreak darkness gives way to light,

At moonrise the lunar reflections abound.

Know that the day has broken, worry not whether gloom is gone.

Know that Dharmakara has become Amitabha Buddha, do not doubt whether our rebirth is assured.

Rising in the east, the sun shines on everything, embracing mountains and plains, and men of virtue and vice without discrimination.

The sunlight is unbiased and all-illuminating. It brings us brightness, warmth, and hope.

The blanket of darkness that covers the earth, however thick, vanishes immediately when the sun comes out.

All the waters on our planet, whether vast or small, reflect the moon when it appears.

Darkness is dispelled at dawn the instant the sun rises.

Likewise, the moment the moon rises at night, at once we see its reflections upon the water. There is no delay in the effect. It is effortless and without any human intervention.

Metaphor 55: Reflections of the Moon (3 /3 )

Amitabha’s love is thorough and his deliverance is unconditional. He vows to save all sentient beings of the ten directions, forsaking no one. The Buddha yearns for the rebirth of all sentient beings in his Land of Bliss and does not wish to see one single person abandoned in the Saha World.

However, those who do not exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha will not be able to resonate with the Buddha and thus can solicit no response from him. This is like someone who fails to switch on a light — the lamp simply will not light up.

As Master Yinguang says, “If we can set our mind firmly on liberation from the circle of life and death, and believe in [this Pure Land teaching] without a shred of doubt; though we still live in the Saha World, we are its long-term residents no more. Even though we haven’t yet been born in the Land of Bliss, we are already its guests.”

則雖未出娑婆,已非娑婆之久客;

Metaphor 55: Reflections of the Moon (2 /3 )

Amitabha Buddha is omnipresent. His light permeates everywhere continuously. He empathizes with sentient beings, feeling for us and understanding the situation we are in. No matter when or where, anyone who thinks of Amitabha and exclusively recites Namo Amitabha Buddha, will instantly have the Buddha with him. Amitabha’s mind enters the reciter’s mind and Amitabha’s light embraces him, without discrimination or differentiation.

Therefore, the Contemplation of Infinite Life Sutra says, “All Buddha Tathagatas have a Dharma-nature body that can enter the mind of each sentient being.”

The Sutra also says, “The light [of Amitabha] permeates all worlds, always embracing those who exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha .”

Anyone who exclusively recites Namo Amitabha Buddha is immediately connected with Amitabha and becomes one with him. The reciter and Amitabha enter each other’s mind, never forsaking one another.

The Contemplation of Infinite Life Sutra says, “Amitabha Buddha’s mind is great compassion. It embraces sentient beings with unconditional kindness.”

“Unconditional kindness” means unconditional love and unconditional deliverance. Amitabha saves us just the way we are.

With great benevolence and compassion, Amitabha never forces sentient beings to act in any particular way. He has been reaching out to us over countless eons, giving us his unwavering care and selfless love. He vows to deliver us absolutely.

Amitabha is our savior, the source of our true peace, joy, and hope. There is always suffering in the mundane world; but, in Amitabha’s arms we will find peace.

Despite the brilliance of the moon in the sky and its reflections in myriad waters on Earth, if I do not look up in the sky or look down at the water, I cannot see the moon or its reflections. The moon and I will have nothing to do with each other and it will mean nothing to me.

Metaphor 55: Reflections of the Moon (1 /3 )

Though it shines everywhere, moonlight registers only in the minds of those who look up to the sky.

Although Amitabha excludes no one from being rescued, his light embraces only those who recite Namo Amitabha Buddha.

The moon glows in the sky and is mirrored in bodies of water of all sizes on Earth. The reflection of the entire moon is ubiquitous: in vast oceans and big rivers like the Yangtze and the Yellow River, in common brooks and pools, and even in the tiny amount of water in a ladle or a raindrop.

No matter where the moon is reflected: in oceans, rivers, brooks or pools, the moonlight keeps the viewer company. It makes no difference whether the moon is admired by one person in a single place, or by a thousand people from a thousand places. The moon does not forsake them; but, is visible to whoever looks up at it, including even those who are in remote mountain areas. Wherever the person goes, east or west, the moon follows him; if he stands still, the moon stops as well.

This is true with everyone, whether man or woman, old or young, kind or evil, wise or foolish.

The moon shines everywhere and is visible to everyone. It does not discriminate or vary.

月光雖無處不照,唯宿仰望者心中;

Metaphor 54: Turning Rubble into Gold

Master Shandao says, “Sentient beings who recite Namo Amitabha Buddha can immediately clear the offenses of many kalpas. When they die, Amitabha and the sacred assembly will naturally appear to welcome them. This cannot be impeded by any negative karma.”

Therefore, Amitabha Buddha is also known as the Buddha of Unhindered Light. Amitabha’s powerful karma can change evil into good and transform an ordinary being into a sacred being. As a verse puts it, “As long as you exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, bits of rubble will be transformed into gold.”

Metaphor 53: Reciting Amitabha’s Name is Like Having a Meal or Taking Medicine

To recite Amitabha’s Name is like taking food or medicine.

Food staves off hunger while medicine cures an illness, no matter who the person taking it may be. However, for those who are plagued by karmic afflictions, taking medicine may not be effective.

Fortunately, Amitabha’s Name is known as Agada medicine, which is the panacea for all illnesses. Nothing can undermine its potency. It can overcome and eradicate any obstacles that are in its way
