淨宗傳承之第十八願


In the Pure Land School and as an Amitabha-reciter, the importance of the 18th Vow is fundamental, absolute, and indispensable. With this vow the Pure Land School exists, without it, it would not. According to this vow, rebirth is assured, otherwise it is not.


對淨土宗和念佛人而言,第十八願之價值與重要,是根本性的、絕對性的,是不可或缺、無可替代的。有此願則有淨土宗,無此願則無淨土宗;依此願則往生決定,不依此願則往生不定。

淨土小常識


Name and body are the same, one entity - “Name” means Namo Amituofo, the six-character great Name; “body” means the body of Amitabha Buddha. Amitabha’s six-character Name and Amitabha’s Buddha-body are one. Thus, it is one as two and two as one. They are together, like two sides of a coin.

The Name is Amitabha Buddha, and Amitabha is the Name. It is just like a piece of paper with two sides. If there were no front of the sheet, there could be no back of the sheet. This is called “Name and body are the same, one entity”.


名體一如 - 「名」是指「南無阿彌陀佛」六字洪名,「體」是指阿彌陀佛本身;彌陀六字名號跟阿彌陀佛的佛體、佛身是一而二、二而一,是在一起的,是一體的兩面,所以叫作「一如」。也就是名號的本身就是阿彌陀佛的本身,而阿彌陀佛的本身也就是名號,好像一張紙,有正面,有反面,離開了正面沒有反面,離開了反面沒有正面,這叫「名體一如」。

淨土信仰


To offer kindness is to render joy. To render joy means to share the joy of becoming a Buddha. Compassion means freeing them from suffering, i.e. to rescue them from the suffering of reincarnation within the Six Realms. The only teaching that truly frees all of us from suffering in the Six Realms, and gives us the joy of becoming a Buddha, is the teaching of Amitabha-recitation. In this respect, by propagating this teaching, we are sharing the greatest kindness, compassion, and the infinite power of Amitabha’s 18th Vow.


「慈」就是「與樂」,「與樂」就是給他「成佛之樂」。「悲」就是「拔苦」,拔他六道輪迴之苦。所以真正能夠給他拔六道之苦、與成佛之樂的,就只有念佛法門了,這樣說來,弘揚這一個法門,豈不就是一個大慈悲大願力的法門?

The Pure Land Gate is the Easy Path, the teaching of Other-power that enables ordinary beings to be reborn in Amitabha’s Pure Land. It is a teaching of deliverance emphasizing deep faith. What does it believe in? It believes in Amitabha-recitation, the exclusive recitation of Amitabha’s Name, powered by Amitabha Buddha. It is just like sailing on board a ship, “joyful, single, rapid, and ascertained”. In this way rebirth is assured.

The Sacred Gate and the Pure Land Gate, the Difficult Path and the Easy Path, Self-Power and Other-Power, are all Buddhist teachings. So, we shouldn’t say that cultivation with vigor is a Buddhist teaching, and leisurely Amitabha-recitation is not.


「淨土門」是易行道,是他力的,凡夫都可以做得到,是講信心的救度法門,信什麼呢?信念佛,專一念佛便可,就好像水道乘船,是「樂、一、速、必」,而且往生決定。

「聖道門」和「淨土門」都是佛法,「難行道」與「易行道」也都是佛法,「自力」、「他力」也是佛法,所以我們不能說精進勇猛修行的才是佛法,輕鬆念佛的就不是佛法。

淨宗判教 - 總顯其義


Master Daochuo differentiated the Buddhist teachings into the Sacred Gate and thePure Land Gate. To enter the Sacred Gate, one must possess the qualities and capacities to practice sacred teachings; but, it is not necessary to have those kinds of qualities and capacities to enter the Pure Land Gate. By merely believing and accepting Amitabha’s deliverance, exclusively reciting Amitabha’s name, and aspiring to be reborn in his Pure Land, one can be reborn there and become a Buddha.

To conclude, the entirety of the Buddhist teachings can be divided into two gates - the Sacred Gate is the Difficult Path through “self-power”, which is suitable for those having the advanced aptitude to perfectly practice the Six Paramitas and many other practices. It is similar to walking along a land route that is “painful, ever changing, and takes a long time to reach your goal”. While following the Difficult Path it is common to have set backs; which make the possibility of realizing the Buddhist Way uncertain.

道綽禪師將佛法區判為「聖道門」和「淨土門」。也就是說,這「聖道門」必須是聖者的根器才能夠修的,而「淨土門」則不必一定要聖者的根器眾生,只要信受彌陀救度,專稱彌陀佛名,願生彌陀淨土,就能往生彌陀淨土而成佛了。

綜合言之,整個佛法可分為二門:「聖道門」是難行道,是自力的,是聖者根器才能修的,是講修六度萬行,須什麼行都要修,這就如陸道步行,所以是「苦、諸、久、墮」,既然有退墮的可能,那就表示證果的可能性不確定。

Amitabha’s light embraces and never forsakes us. Amitabha’s merit and virtues are always received in our hearts. Amitabha’s light always protects our bodies. We live within the light of Amitabha, and Amitabha always empowers our faith. We enter the Buddha’s mind, and the Buddha enters our minds. It is just like fire burning a piece of wood, one united body. We and Amitabha get up, lie down, come, and go together. Amitabha is sad when we are sad and happy when we are happy.


彌陀的光明永遠攝取不捨,彌陀的功德納入我心,彌陀的光明攝護我身;我在彌陀光明中,彌陀在我信念中,我入佛心,佛入我心,如火燒木,一體不離,我與彌陀共起臥,共出入,成為──我苦惱彌陀苦惱,我安樂彌陀安樂。

The Fundamental Vow, the King of Amitabha’s 48 vows, is the 18th Vow. All of the other 47 vows are made to serve the 18th Vow, and each of them eventually returns to the 18th Vow.


阿彌陀佛四十八大願的根本願、本願王,就是第十八願;四十八願中,每一願、每一願都是為了服務第十八願,每一願、每一願最後都歸入第十八願。

It is difficult to conceive the depth of these merits and virtues!

念佛往生,是自行大悲;勸他往生,是化他大悲。能行此大悲者,即是真正知恩報德,功德難思。

Amitabha Buddha dispatches 25 bodhisattvas
To come and protect us at all times.
Amitabha-reciters will directly enter the City of Nirvana at the end of their lives.
As their minds are simple and straightforward, and their practice is genuine,
Amitabha Buddha will come to welcome them.

十方恒沙佛舒舌,

Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teaching explaining the General Principles of the Classification of Teachings
淨宗判教 - 總顯其義

Nagarjuna Bodhisattva divided the Buddhist teachings into the Difficult Path and the Easy Path. Master Tanluan further divided them into those of Self-Power and Other-Power. Master Daochuo divided them into the Sacred Gate and the Pure Land Gate. Each of them indicates the demarcation of Shakyamuni’s teachings in his particular era. At the end, the demarcation of the Sacred Gate and the Pure Land Gate were adopted as special terms and included in the Pure Land School.

龍樹菩薩把佛法分為「難行道」和「易行道」,曇鸞大師進一步把它分為「自力」和「他力」,到了道綽禪師就分為「聖道門」和「淨土門」,這些都是對於釋迦牟尼佛一代教法的判教。到最後,「聖道門」和「淨土門」就成為淨土宗判教的專有名稱和定論。

I think of Amitabha, and Amitabha thinks of me. Amitabha and I get up and lie down together. Amitabha and I follow each other. It is just like fire burning a piece of wood, one unified body. Why is this so? Because “the Name and body are one”, because “the light embraces”.
That is why an Amitabha-reciter’s heart is filled with Amitabha’s merit and virtues, and his body is protected by Amitabha’s light. Amitabha’s Buddha body comes to receive him. Amitabha and I are one entity. Thus, Amitabha’s shadow always surrounds the bodies of Amitabha-reciters.

我念彌陀,彌陀念我;我與彌陀共起臥,彌陀與我鎮相隨;如火燒木,一體不離。何以如此?「名體不離」故,「光明攝取」故。
是故念佛之人,彌陀功德充滿其心,彌陀光明護佑其身,彌陀佛身來迎其人,彌陀與我一體不離。是故,念佛人之身上,時時顯現彌陀之形。

Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teachings about the Patriarchal Lineage of the Pure Land School – the 18th Vow
淨宗傳承之第十八願

The Three Canons, Twelve Divisions, and eight thousand teachings of various kinds, taught by all Buddhas and bodhisattvas in the ten directions and three periods of time, all of them are covered by and included in the merit, virtues, functions and power of the 18th Vow.
In addition, the merit and virtues of the Three Jewels - Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, of the entire ten directions and the three periods of time, all of them are covered by and included in the 18th Vow. Not a single thing is missing.

第十八願的功德、功能、力用,含蓋三藏十二部、含蓋十方三世佛、含蓋一切 諸菩薩、含蓋八萬諸聖教,亦即盡十方三世之佛法僧三寶的所有功德,在第十八願無不具足、無有遺漏。

Common Knowledge in Pure Land Teaching
淨土小常識

Mind of merit-dedication and aspiration
To dedicate with genuine and deep faith, all of our past and present virtuous roots and from delighting in those of others, towards rebirth in the Pure Land – that is to have the Mind of Merit-Dedication and Aspiration.
However, those who practice Amitabha-recitation exclusively do not dedicate merit from miscellaneous practices. Rather, they dedicate the virtuous roots nurtured before they began exclusively reciting the name of Amitabha Buddha. Since they now recite exclusively, their assorted good deeds and those of others they took delight in are folded into Amitabha-recitation, becoming one entity. Hence, they no longer need to dedicate any virtues.
To sum up, the Mind of Merit-Dedication and Return is a mental state of yearning for rebirth in the Pure Land, with no retrogression.

迴向發願心
以過去今生,自作、隨喜等一切善根,悉皆真實深信心中迴向願生彼國,稱作迴向發願心。
專修念佛行者,並非於念佛之外別修雜行以迴向,乃是迴向專修念佛之前所作善根。因既專修念佛,點滴之善皆納入念佛一體,念佛之外不見餘善之相故。
又不僅自作善根迴向,也隨喜他善以迴向。總之,切願往生、相續不退之心即為迴向發願心。

Pure Land teaching can benefit oneself by benefitting others. How? We can benefit ourselves through Amitabha-recitation, and we can also benefit others through promoting the teaching of Amitabha-recitation. Among other Buddhist teachings this is not the case. For instance, if we cannot sever our own greed, hatred and delusion, how can we teach others to sever their greed, hatred and delusion?

淨土法門是自利利他都可以兩相成全的。為什麼?我們念佛就是自利,推廣念佛就是在利他,如果是其他的法門就不是這樣的。其他法門,自己貪瞋癡都還沒有斷,自利尚且未做到,怎麼能夠去利他讓人家斷貪瞋癡呢?

Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teachings about General Principles used in the Classification of Teachings
淨宗判教 - 總顯其義

The theology of Amitabha-recitation in the Shandao lineage originates from the demarcation of the teaching into the Two Paths: Difficult and Easy (adopted by Nagarjuna), the Two Powers - Self and Other (adopted by Tanluan), the Two Doors - Sacred and Pure Land (adopted by Daochuo), and the Two Teachings – Sudden and Gradual, (adopted by Shandao). It also includes the demarcation of the practices into: the Two Practices – Main and Miscellaneous, the Two Karmas - Primary and Supplementary, and the Karma of Assurance - exclusive recitation of Amitabha’s Name in accordance with his Fundamental Vow, to attain assured rebirth in Amitabha’s reward land.
Thus, the guiding principles of the theology of Amitabha-recitation in the Shandao lineage are “name-recitation in accordance with the Fundamental Vow”, and “ordinary beings attaining rebirth in the reward land”. It is the same as the conclusive statement made by Master Shandao in his Commentary on the Contemplation Sutra - “Given Amitabha Buddha’s fundamental vow, Shakyamuni Buddha’s underlying wish is none other than for all sentient beings to recite the name of Amitabha exclusively.

善導流之念佛思想,源自龍樹「難易二道」、曇鸞「自他二力」、道綽「聖淨二門」、善導「頓漸二教」等教判,及善導「正雜二行」、「助正二業」、「正定業」之行判;而歸宗結頂於彌陀本願專稱佛名之「正定業」為必得往生彌陀報土之行業。
故其宗旨即是「本願稱名、凡夫入報」,即是善導《觀經疏》結論之所言:望佛本願,意在眾生,一向專稱,彌陀佛名。

By bringing forth the 48 Vows all living beings are enabled to cross over to Amitabha’s Pure Land.
Evil and rebellious men, who are regretful of their offences, will also be received by him.
Do not misunderstand the Buddha saying he is not selective.
The reason for this indiscrimination is that the Buddha takes pity on them as future Buddhas, who have yet to accomplish Buddhahood.

四十八願度眾生,逆惡歸心也來迎;
非是混濫無簡擇,憐彼是佛尚未成。

My body is pitiful – the weight of its karma is immeasurable. Its suffering is boundless, and its reincarnation within the cycle of birth-and-death is endless. 
My aspiration is sincere – I aspire to renounce the Saha world, to be reborn in the Land of Bliss, to complete the Buddhist Way, and vow to deliver sentient beings.
Amitabha’s great vow can deliver all good and evil ordinary beings comprehensively.
Sentient beings who recite Amitabha’s Name are assured of quickly realizing the unsurpassed fruition of Buddhahood.

悲哉我身:造業無量,苦惱無邊,生死無窮,輪迴無盡。
誠哉我願:願離娑婆,願生極樂,願成佛道,願度眾生。
彌陀弘願,廣度一切善惡凡夫;
眾生念佛,必得速證無上佛果。

Among sentient beings who recite Amitabha’s Name with singleness of mind, Amitabha-recitation is taken as the cause. For Amitabha, who sets forth the great vows comprehensively, the great vow is taken as the condition. The combination of harmonious cause and condition makes it possible for all good and evil ordinary beings to be reborn in Amitabha’s reward land, and to realize unsurpassed Prajna together.
Amitabha is magnificent - his light and life are infinite, his vows are boundless, his wisdom is unfathomable, and his compassion is endless. The Land of Bliss is indescribably beautiful – its merit and virtues are immeasurable, vast, and without borders. The Way is infinite and the joy is endless.

眾生專一念佛,念佛為因;彌陀廣發弘願,弘願為緣。因緣和合,致使一切善惡凡夫,皆得往生彌陀報土,同證無上大般涅槃。

慕哉極樂:功德無量,廣大無邊,昇道無窮,喜樂無盡。

As far as Amitabha’s 48 vows are concerned, the 18th Vow should be regarded as the King, the root source of all the vows. It is the unique vow known as the Fundamental Vow.
Amitabha vows to deliver sentient beings of the ten directions through this Fundamental Vow. Regardless of their wisdom and virtues, Amitabha equally delivers them. No one is excluded!!

若論彌陀四十八願,以第十八願為願中之王,根本之願,獨稱本願;以此本願,誓救十方眾生,不論善惡賢愚,悉皆平等普度,毫無一人遺漏。

Common Knowledge in Pure Land Teaching
淨土小常識

Deep Mind - It is a mind with deep faith. There are two dimensions to that faith: 1) with reference to the aptitude of sentient beings, and 2) with reference to the deliverance of Amitabha Buddha. This is known as the “two kinds of deep faith.”
1. Faith with reference to the aptitude of sentient beings - This is to believe deeply that we are iniquitous ordinary beings subject to endless rebirth. Since time immemorial we have died and been reincarnated, with no hope of leaving the cycle of rebirth. It is a belief in our own powerlessness to leave the cycle of birth-and-death by our own power.
2. Faith with reference to the deliverance of Amitabha Buddha - This is to believe deeply that Amitabha Buddha’s 48 Vows have been accomplished for us iniquitous ordinary beings, who otherwise would be unable to leave the cycle of rebirth. They create the powerful karma that enables us to do so. As a result, we gain assured rebirth in the Pure Land without doubt or anxiety, by depending on the power of Amitabha’s vows.

深心 - 即深信之心。所信內容有二: 1.信機 2.信法 ⇒ 合稱「機法兩種深信」。
1. 信機:即深信自身是罪惡生死凡夫,曠劫以來常沒常流轉,無有出離之緣。也就是信自身之無力,以自力不可能出離生死。
2. 信法:即深信阿彌陀佛四十八願已經成就,專為我等罪惡凡夫、無出離緣者作出離強緣,因而無疑無慮,乘彼願力,定得往生。

淨土信仰

Whoever accepts the Pure Land teaching has accumulated great wisdom and karmic rewards. It doesn’t matter whether he is knowledgeable or not. Whoever practices the teaching exclusively will accumulate an abundance of virtuous roots and meritorious blessings. It doesn’t matter if he possesses a high or low aptitude. If he can go further and teach others to believe as he does, he is sharing great compassion through Amitabha’s infinite power. It doesn’t matter whether his mind is wide open or not.
A person who can believe the Buddha and recite Amitabha’s Name is regarded as “benefitting one’s self”. A person who advises others to believe the Buddha and recite Amitabha’s Name is offering “ great compassion through advising others”.

凡是能夠認同淨土法門的,不管他有學識、沒學識,都可說是大智慧、大福報的人;能夠專修淨土法門,不管他根機高、根機低、都是大善根、大福德的人。

如果能夠進一步自信教人信,不管他心量大、心量小,都是大慈悲、大願力之人。自己信佛念佛, 就是自行大悲;勸人信佛念佛,就是勸他大悲。

Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teachings about General Principles of the Classification of Teachings
淨宗判教 - 總顯其義

Those who practice and propagate the Pure Land teachings must clearly separate the doctrines of the Sacred Path and the Pure Land Path. Otherwise the two doctrines may be unclear and confused with each other. The differences between the Difficult Path and the Easy Path, the difference between Other-power and Self-power, the differences between the Path of importance and the Path of the Great Vow, and the differences between the Main / Primary Practices and Miscellaneous Practices must be emphasized.
In a nutshell, the differences have to be clear and explicit with no ambiguity or compromise. We must differentiate what is the Sacred Path towards the Pure Land and what are the Pristine Pure Land teachings. In this way, we can easily and properly manage our practice, and understand the land that we are reborn in is Amitabha’s Land of Rewards.

修習淨土法門與弘揚淨土法門的人,都必須要把「聖道門」與「淨土門」的理論劃分開來才不會彼此模糊、混淆。甚至要強調「難行道」、「易行道」之別,強調「他力」、「自力」之分,強調「要門」、「弘願門」之異,強調「正行」、「雜行」之不同。
總之,就是要清清楚楚、明明白白、毫不混淆的、毫不妥協、苟且的將它理清,才能讓我們能夠明辨什麼才是真正的淨土之道,什麼是混雜不純的,讓我們很容易的正確掌握行持,也了解往生是進入報土。

印光大師法語「念佛必生」之文

Amitabha Tathagata brought forth the 48 vows in the causal ground. Every single vow is aimed at delivering sentient beings. Thus he says, “If you think of (recite) my Name and you are not reborn in my land, I vow not to become a Buddha.”
At present, he has already fulfilled his causal vows and perfected the fruition of Buddhahood.
So we must understand, “If I think of (recite) the Buddha’s Name now, I am assured of attaining rebirth.”

彌陀如來在因地中,發四十八願,願願度生,
中有「念我名號,不生我國,誓不成佛」。
今者因圓果滿,故「我今念佛,必得往生。」

Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teachings Expressing the Perception of the Pure Land
淨土述懷

The Buddha has accomplished the Land of Bliss for sentient beings, wishing them to be equally reborn there. However, sentient beings are ashamed and think they are inferior. They do not believe in themselves, and think they do not deserve to accept Amitabha’s deliverance. Conversely, they may doubt Amitabha’s compassionate deliverance, and make themselves unable to receive the merit and virtues of rebirth.
Amitabha’s deliverance is genuine and real, proactive and equal, and Absolutely Unconditional! Despite this, sentient beings pay more attention to themselves than the Buddha, and thereby turn their backs on the Buddha.
Whether we think we are deserving or not, we should accept the Buddha’s words as our benchmark. If the Buddha says we are deserving , we certainly are.

佛為眾生,成就極樂,欲使眾生,平等往生。然而眾生,自慚形穢,不信自己,配得領受,反疑彌陀慈悲救度,而不能獲得往生功德。
彌陀救度,真實不虛,主動平等,絕無條件。然而眾生,注視自己,過於視佛,致常與佛背。
配與不配,佛言為準,佛說配受,即是配受。

Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teachings about the Patriarchal Lineage of the Pure Land School – the 18th Vow
淨宗傳承之第十八願

Though the number of great vows is 48, only the 18th Vow is the Fundamental Vow.
The other 47 vows are known as the ‘vows of admiration.’ All the benefits and merits of admiring the 47 vows return to the fundamental vow, the vow of Amitabha-recitation.
The 18th Vow is the causal vow, the fundamental vow, and the king of vows.
The 18th Vow is the original source, the fundamental body, and the life of the Pure
Land School.
The 18th Vow is Amitabha’s original intent, Shakyamuni’s original intent, and all Buddhas’ original intents. It is the savior of sentient beings.
The 18th Vow is the vow of worldly transcendence, made by the king of all Buddhas. It is the noblest light of all, the vow of great kindness and compassion, that sets us free from suffering and gives us joy.

彌陀弘願雖有四十八,以第十八願為「根本願」,餘之四十七願叫做「欣慕願」,欣慕四十七願所誓的功德利益,而回歸到根本的念佛。
第十八願是本願、根本願,願王、本願王。
第十八願是淨土宗之根源、本體、生命。
第十八願是彌陀本懷、釋尊本懷、諸佛本懷、眾生救主。
第十八願是超世願、諸佛之王、光中極尊、大慈大悲、拔苦與樂之所在。

2. Nature of mind - Ordinary beings lack truthfulness. They are full of greed, anger, deviousness, and hypocrisy, and their iniquitous nature is hard to penetrate. They may make positive efforts through the Three Karmas (deeds, words and thoughts); but, these are known as contaminated acts of virtue. They are also called empty, false deeds, not genuine or truthful actions.
On the other hand, Amitabha Buddha is absolutely pure and truthful. While he was practicing the Bodhisattva path in the causal ground, his every thought and actions were genuine. All his practices in the Three Karmas were of a truthful nature.
If we let go of our self-power, rely on Amitabha, forsake the false, and recite his Name exclusively, our rebirth is assured.

2.心性:凡夫一向無有真實,貪瞋邪偽、惡性難侵,雖起三業,名為雜毒之善,亦名虛假之行,不名真實之業。
然阿彌陀佛絕對清淨、絕對真實,乃至因中行菩薩行時,一念一時,三業所修,無不真實。
若捨己歸佛,捨假取真,信受彌陀救度,專稱彌陀佛名,必得往生。

Sincere Mind –
Sincere Mind means a genuine, true mind. It has two aspects: (1) form of mind and (2) nature of mind.
(1) Form of Mind –
Ordinary beings habitually incline toward the false and insubstantial, not the true and substantive. What they say often diverges from what they think. Their words and thoughts are not genuine; they are empty and false. Truth arises when thoughts are consistent with deeds, and the internal is aligned with the external. Though thoughts in the minds of ordinary beings are usually false, genuineness is necessary for rebirth in the Pure Land.

至誠心 - 即真實心。此有二重: 1. 心相 2. 心性
1.心相:凡夫之心,多虛少實。心口各異,言念無實,即為虛假;心行一致,內外相符,即為真實。縱於餘事心多虛假,然於往生必須真實。
