Master Huijing’s Dharma Words about Taking Refuge to Amitabha
皈命彌陀

In the phrase “unconditioned great kindness”, unconditioned means great kindness and compassion without any condition. Only the kind of compassion that will deliver those who cannot be delivered can be regarded as great. If there is a person that cannot be delivered, that kind of compassion and wisdom is then limited to a defined scope, and hence not really great.

Amitabha’s deliverance is unconditioned kindness and compassion absolutely without any condition. Moreover, Amitabha has accomplished all merits and virtues required to deliver us before he becomes a Buddha.

所謂「無緣大慈」,緣就是條件,無緣就是無條件的大慈悲,救度不能救度的人,這種慈悲才是大;如果有不能救度的人,那麼這種慈悲跟智慧就有範圍了,就不是大了。

阿彌陀佛的救度,是絕對沒有條件的無緣大慈,而且阿彌陀佛已經完成了救度我們的功德能量,因此祂才成佛的。

Master Shandao says, “We are iniquitous ordinary beings subject to endless rebirth.” No matter how wise and talented, or how knowledgeable and intelligent, we can do nothing [to help] when we are on board of the ship of Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow. Furthermore, the mind of ordinary beings is full of greed, anger and delusion, rich in the Five Aggregates and the Six Dusts. Although a person may be a kind of sentient being who can practice vigorously, and feel serene occasionally, by no means he or she can subdue greed, anger and delusion. He may think that he can subdue and detach all these, or he can be pure and relaxed, or even reach a certain meditative state; but that cannot help in the matter of liberation from the cycle of birth-and-death.

善導大師說:「一者、深信自身現是罪惡生死凡夫」,即使自己再怎麼有智慧才華、廣學多聞,在彌陀的本願船當中也無用武之地。何況凡夫內心都有貪瞋痴,五蘊塵勞濃厚,即使是精進修行的根性,偶有寂靜的心境,但根本無法降伏貪瞋痴;自以為能降伏而淡薄,能夠清淨、輕安,甚至能到未到地定,可是這對解脫生死輪迴是沒有用的。

佛法知見

Not understanding the truth and having delusion in the Four Noble Truths is called Delusion in View. Not understanding the truth and having the afflictions of greed, anger, delusion, arrogance and doubt is called Delusion in Volition.

Should a person realize the truths and cut off all afflictions of greed, anger, delusion, arrogance and doubt, we can say that he has “cut and terminated delusions of view and volition”. A person who cut and terminate delusions of view and volition has no relative views between you and me, enemies and friends, good and evil, favorable and adverse, love and hatred, delight and anger, happiness and suffering, etc.

This is a realm of realization, just like drinking water—only the one who drinks knows whether the water is warm or cold. It is a realm beyond our speech and thought. For now, we can just explain the theory in words; the reality of the realm, however, is totally different, no matter how hard we try to explain. It is similar to the difference between heaven and earth.

對真理不了解,迷於四諦的真理叫「見惑」;對真理不了解,有貪、瞋、癡、慢等煩惱叫「思惑」。

如果證悟真理,又斷除了貪瞋癡慢的煩惱,稱為「見思斷盡」,一個見思斷盡的人,就沒有你我、冤親、善惡、順逆、愛憎、喜怒、苦樂……等種種彼我對待。

這是一種證悟的境界,如人飲水,冷暖自知,而且是言語道斷,心行處滅。我們現在只是就文字上、學理上來解說,但儘管再怎麼解說,跟實際上的境界完全是兩碼事,猶如天地之別。

So, it is very important to have harmony in human relationship. Let’s set one step back; appreciate, tolerate and forgive each other. Don’t be emotional. Don’t blame others. Don’t criticize others. Don’t scold others. Don’t pre-judge or make any judgement to others.

It is said that, for all matters, by giving away in minor conflicts, our mind should be level and peaceful; by setting one step back, our mind should be open in sky high. So, for all matters, try our best to forgive and give away. Turn great matter to small one, and turn small matter to nothing. If we have no dispute with others, and do not fight against others, we will naturally have no worry.

因此,人與人相處和合很重要;彼此要各退一步、各讓一步,彼此體諒包容,凡事不情緒、不抱怨、不批評、不責備、不判斷人、不定人的罪。

所謂「讓三分心平氣和,退一步海闊天空。」凡事多忍讓,大事化小事,小事化無事,與人無爭無怨,自然無憂無慮。

From the Buddhist point of view, harmony can be regarded as the highest realm. A Buddha is in the realm of harmony, so called ‘nirvana and stillness’. So, the Buddha stipulates all monastic order to follow the Six Harmonious Respects. If there has no harmony, it cannot be said to be a monastic order, because it will bring the order, as well as others, vexations. A monastic order like that cannot be harmonious and cannot be stable.

以佛教來說,可以說「和」是最高的境界,佛就是「和」的境界,所謂「涅槃寂靜」。所以佛陀規定僧眾要「六和敬」,如果沒有「和」的話就不能稱為僧團,因為會給自己帶來苦惱,也會給他人帶來苦惱,這樣僧團就不能和合不能穩定。

3. Absolutely unconditional – For any person who believes and accepts Amitabha’s deliverance, exclusively recites Amitabha’s name and aspires to be reborn in Amitabha’s Pure Land, if he keeps this mind unchanged, he has been already attained the status quo and assured of rebirth from Amitabha Buddha.

In our Saha world, everything is conditional. For instance, being a human being, upholding the Five Precepts is a condition; being a heavenly being, performing the Ten Wholesome Deeds is a condition. If you wish to immigrate to Auckland, there must be some conditions. Only rebirth in the Land of Bliss is unconditional.

As long as we truly believe and accept Amitabha’s deliverance at that moment, wish to allow Amitabha to deliver us, and recite Amitabha’s name thereafter, we have already been delivered. It is not because of the power of our cultivation, but the unconditional great kindness and unconditional great compassion of Amitabha Buddha.

(三)絕對無條件:任何人只要信受彌陀救度,專稱彌陀佛名,願生彌陀淨土,這種心一生不變,就已經得到阿彌陀佛的救度,獲得必定往生的身份。

於此娑婆世間,凡事都是有條件的,譬如說要當人,必須有守五戒的條件;要升天,必須有十善的條件;要移民奧克蘭,更有一些條件,獨有往生西方極樂世界是不需要條件的,只要你當下真的信受彌陀的救度,願給彌陀救到極樂世界去,從此就專稱這句名號,就已經被阿彌陀佛救度了。這不是我們修行的能力,是阿彌陀佛的無緣大慈、同體大悲。

2. Equal with no discrimination – no discrimination between monastic and householder, practitioner and non-practitioner, good and bad people, as far as Amitabha’s deliverance is concerned. Friends and enemies are the same in Buddha’s mind, which signifies “no notion of their own selfhood, no notion of other selves, no notion of living beings, and no notion of a universal self.” He will not say: “As you are a great monk, I deliver you first”; “You are inferior in root of virtues, and you have no merits and virtues, so I don’t deliver you”. There is no such concept of discrimination.

(二)平等無差別:不分出家人、在家人,不分有修行的人、沒修行的人,不分善人、惡人,阿彌陀佛的救度都沒有差別。佛心冤親平等,就是無我相、無人相、無眾生相、無壽者相,哪有分別說你是高僧我就救你,你是一位下劣根機,一生沒有行善積德,我就不救你,沒有這些差別觀念的。

Amitabha Buddha is the Master of Land of Bliss. He made vows to deliver each of sentient beings. The characteristics of the deliverance of Amitabha Buddha are:

1. It is proactive, no need for us to ask and invite. Before the countless eons, Amitabha proactively made vows to deliver sentient beings of the ten directions, and build the Land of Bliss, and complete the merits and virtues necessary from delivering sentient beings of the ten worlds through cultivation. While he made the vows by that time, we did not know. And, during our reincarnation in the Three Wretched Realms – hell, ghost and animal, we did not know Amitabha Buddha had made vows and practiced for us.

阿彌陀佛是西方極樂世界的教主,祂發願要救度每一位眾生,阿彌陀佛救度眾生的特色是:

(一)主動而來,不必我們請求拜託。阿彌陀佛在無量劫之前,就主動為十方眾生發願,建設極樂世界,修行完成救度十方世界眾生的功德。祂當時為我們發願,我們並不知道,當我們輪迴在地獄或是餓鬼、畜牲道時,我們都不知道阿彌陀佛已經在為我們發願修行了。

We have ignorance, also greed, angry and delusion. Before we can subdue all these, all our thoughts can emerge from greed, anger and delusion. Under these circumstances, no matter how we perform wholesome deeds, all the merits accumulated are mixed with impurities.

It is particularly serious for sentient beings like us who born in the Saha World that full of the Five Turbidities. We are severe in the Three Poisons – greed, anger and delusion, and our afflictions and karmic obstructions are heavy, while our virtuous mind is feeble. So, we perform unwholesome deeds like heavy rains and raging storms.

我們都有無明,都有貪瞋癡。在無明、貪瞋癡沒有降伏之下,我們的起心動念,都是從貪瞋癡延伸出來的。既然這樣的話,再怎麼行善積德,都還是有無明、有貪瞋癡摻雜在裏面。尤其是我們這些出生在娑婆世界五濁惡世的眾生,貪瞋癡三毒很強盛,煩惱業障很深重,善心微微,而造惡卻如狂風暴雨那麼強烈。

The Diamond Sutra says, “It is impossible to retain a past thought, to hold onto a present thought and to seize a future thought.” “No notion of their own selfhood, no notion of other selves, no notion of living beings, and no notion of a universal self.” and “If we see all notions with no-notion, we will see Tathagata.”

The content is not difficult to understand academically; but it will be very difficult if we want to realize its meaning in the context of True Mind. All these theories stated in the Diamond Sutra, however, can be instantly revealed if we are reborn in the Land of Bliss. Conversely, if we cannot be reborn in the Land of Bliss, we may not necessarily realize the principle of “eradicate the 'three thoughts', and empty the 'four notions'”—even we have held and read ten thousand volumes of the teachings.

《金剛經》上說:「過去心不可得,現在心不可得,未來心不可得」、「無我相,無人相,無眾生相,無壽者相」、「若見諸相非相,即見如來」。

這些內容若只當學問上的了解是不難的,但若求真正心性上的體悟,則非常困難。但我們只要往生極樂世界,《金剛經》的道理瞬間即統統顯現了;反之,若沒有往生極樂世界,即使誦持一萬卷,也未必能體證「泯三心,空四相」。

The merits and virtues required for delivering sentient beings of the ten directions are inconceivably great and enormous, inconceivably deep and vast. So, Amitabha Buddha takes countless eons to cultivate and accumulate immeasurable virtues for all of us. It is because we commit karmic offenses every day, and do not accumulate any merit and virtue—no real good deed at all.

Amitabha Buddha knows all these. Before Amitabha delivers us, he has to repay all our debts first. He therefore takes countless eons to cultivate and accumulate immeasurable virtues for us. Here lies Amitabha’s goal.

要能救度十方眾生的功德,可以說是不可思議的大、不可思議的多、不可思議的深廣,因此要經過兆載永劫,替我們積植無量德行。因為我們每天都在造業,不是在累積功德,甚至毫無真實之善。

這些,阿彌陀佛都知道,阿彌陀佛要救度我們,就必須先為我們還清這些債務,所以,於兆載永劫積植無量德行,目的就在這裏。

Although each Buddha sets forth the Four Great Vows to deliver sentient beings, it will be difficult for the Buddha to deliver those sentient beings who have no karmic affiliation with him. Amitabha Buddha is compassionate and his goal is to deliver sentient beings of the ten directions. Therefore, he has to develop karmic connections with sentient beings of the ten directions, no matter they are sagely or ordinary beings, or even the most iniquitous ones, and facilitate them to be equally reborn in the Land of Bliss. This is an extraordinary task!

雖然每位佛都一樣發救度眾生的「四弘誓願」,可是如果這個眾生跟這位佛沒有緣,這位佛要度他就比較困難。
阿彌陀佛的慈悲,祂的目的是要救度十方眾生,所以祂必須先跟十方眾生結緣。不管是聖人、凡夫或極惡罪人,都要讓他們平等往生極樂世界,這非同小可啊!

At the same time, because he is the one being saved, he will be humble. He is a man who has nowhere to go and his life is in danger, and then suddenly he is saved. So, to this man, his life is extended as a bonus. Therefore, when he is humble, contended, and not disputing, his mind will become soften, and at the same time he wants to give back to others and help others. He will be more receptive and tolerant. So, formed by people with grateful minds, this group or community must be warm and harmonious.

同時,因為他是被救者,他就會謙虛、謙卑下來。自己是一個走投無路、生命垂危的人,突然獲救了,生命對他來講是多加的。所以在他謙卑、知足、無諍的時候,他的心就會柔軟,同時想回饋他人,幫助他人,因此就會彼此接納,互相包容。所以有感恩心的人,這個團體必定是溫馨的,這個團體必定是和諧的。

A person with a grateful heart will always feel satisfied, have no dispute with others, be tolerant, and helpful to others. So, being grateful is priceless temperament that can render warmth to people around, render harmony to communities, and render blessings and happiness to one self.

Those who have received helps from others will certainly help other people. Why? It is because he experienced the warmth of being helped by others, and the precious rareness of being helped. So, he has the same mind with the same rationale, so he will naturally help others.

有感恩心的人,對自己會知足無諍,對別人會容人助人。因此感恩心是非常可貴的情操,能夠給四周帶來溫馨,給團體帶來和諧,使自己更有幸福感、快樂感。

因為曾經受過人家的幫助,必定會幫助別人,為什麼?因為他體會到當時被幫助的溫馨,當時被幫助的難得可貴。那人同此心、心同此理,自自然然他也會想去幫助別人。

Couples who openly displayed their love for each other are said to have divorced soon after; those who flaunted their riches are said to have gone bankrupt in no time; those who showed their high position and power are said to have just been put in prison; and those who taught others how to be healthy are said to have fallen ill suddenly and died …

The wind of impermanence is fierce. Like bubbles, everything in this world breaks easily. Whatever you have on show, perishes.

We reciters have nothing to show but Amitabha Buddha. We are showing others that rebirth to the Pure Land is guaranteed by reciting the name of the Buddha. How happy we are!

May I wish that everyone can have this blessing to show with tenacity and equanimity. A blessing which is available to all and does not create greed or envy.

“Be grateful under any circumstance.” Being grateful is precious. If we get help from a good person when we are in trouble, we will engrave the kindness on our hearts. If we are saved when our life is in critical danger, what do we feel? We must be deeply grateful for the kind act. We’ll reward them financially if we afford to do so. If we don’t, we can reward them with our life because they give us a new lease on life.

「凡事感恩」,感恩是很可貴的,有困難的時候,獲得貴人的協助,我們就會銘感五內;若是生命交關、危在旦夕的時候,突然被人家救起,我們會怎麼樣呢?感恩戴德,有錢就以錢來報答對方,沒錢就以生命來報答對方,因為我們的生命,是他再造之恩。

出離與輪迴

All sufferings in our life are resulted from greed, anger and delusion. Anger is like fire, and greed is like water, so Shakyamuni Buddha described the world of the Three Domains as a ‘house on fire’, and that of the Six Realms is a ‘sea of suffering’. From the hell to the highest heaven, everywhere is the suffering sea and full of flames. Our Saha World can be said to be filled with various sufferings, but how about the Land of Bliss then?

The Amitabha Sutra says, “Why is that land called 'Land of Bliss'? The inhabitants in that land suffer no pain but only enjoy pleasures of various kinds. For this reason, that land is called 'Land of Bliss.”

人生的苦,就是眾生都具有貪瞋癡,瞋就像火,貪就像海,所以釋迦牟尼佛說三界是火宅、六道是苦海,從地獄一直到非想非非想處天,到處都是苦海、都充滿了大火,可說娑婆世界是眾苦充滿。而極樂世界怎麼樣?《阿彌陀經》說:「彼土何故名為極樂?其國眾生,無有眾苦,但受諸樂,故名極樂。」

The Principal Buddha of the Pure Land School is Amitabha Buddha, the Vow King in the West. He is graded as the Reward Buddha with a reward body. He is a Buddha with numerous perfect and complete meritorious virtues as he is rewarded for his practices according to his vows in his causal ground. Although he is a Reward Buddha, he actually has a threefold body (dharma body, reward body, and manifested body), which are amalgamated into one.

淨土宗之本尊乃西方願王阿彌陀佛,其佛格為報身報佛,是酬報因位之願行而萬德圓滿之佛。雖謂報身佛,實則三身(法、報、應)圓具於一身之高妙報身佛。

Actually, we are ordinary beings with severe afflictions and heavy karmic obstructions. Our Alaya Consciousness has the “seeds” that could grow in the lowest level of the low tier. It does not germinate because the conditions have not come yet. If we do not leave the cycle of reincarnation, we will inevitably come across the situation that the “seeds” germinate in a certain lifetime throughout the countless future lifetimes, during which we will commit offenses in the Five Gravest Transgressions and the Ten Unwholesome Deeds, or even slander the Dharma with no virtuous root.

Thus, we can’t avoid falling if we are unable to leave the cycle of reincarnation. It is extremely dangerous and extremely horrifying. We must take the opportunity of this lifetime to escape from the cycle of reincarnation. One thought can pass through the three periods of time. If we do think that we are those in the lowest level of the low tier, we will “completely give up, and rely totally on [Amitabha’s deliverance]”. There is no another way.

其實我們都是煩惱強盛,業障深重的凡夫,阿賴耶識中都藏有下品下生的種子,只是尚未起逢緣現行而已,若是輪迴未出,則在生生世世、世世生生的無盡輪迴當中,難免會有某一生某一世下品下生的種子起現行,而造作五逆十惡,甚至謗法闡提。

因此輪迴不出,難免墮落,危險之至,恐怖之極,所以要把握此生,脫出輪迴。一念通三世,如果設想自己就是下品下生的根機,就會「徹底放下、通身倒靠」,沒有第二條路。

All matters, whether they are right or wrong, good or bad, and whether it is gain or loss, success or failure, suffering and happiness, fortune or misfortune, are just impermanent harmonization of the causes in the past lives and the conditions in the present life. They have no-self (independent) entity by themselves; they are not permanent and not unchanged, or not extinct forever. With this concept, we are regarded to have the right view in learning Buddhism. It is also known as the ‘Three Universal Truths’ – all phenomena are impermanent; all Dharmas have no-self; nirvana and stillness is eternity.

所有萬物,一切是非好壞、成敗得失、苦樂禍福等只是宿世之因與今世之緣暫時的和合,其本身沒有一個自體,既非固定不變,也非永遠不滅。有了這個觀念,才具有學佛的正見,這也就是所謂的「三法印」—— 諸行無常,諸法無我,涅槃寂靜。

Master Huijing’s Dharma Words about Faith in Pure Land
淨土信仰

Though the Buddhahood that all Buddhas of the ten directions achieve is the same, they are different in making individual vows and practicing in his causal ground. Hence, though they are all Buddhas, their power are different.

Amitabha Buddha originally set forth deep and heavy vows in his causal ground, that is, the 48 great vows. By the time he accomplished all his vows and practices, he also completed his Name, through which can illuminate and benefit [all sentient beings] in the worlds of the ten directions, so as they provoke to recite it. It does not matter whether they recite this Name for rebirth or for other benefits in the present life. Let us pray, and let us recite, so that sentient beings of the ten directions can be easily reborn in the Land of Bliss with recourse to Amitabha’s vow power.

十方諸佛雖然同樣都成佛,不過,每一尊佛在因地時,所發的願、所修的行,個個不同。因此,雖然同樣成佛,但佛力會有不同。

阿彌陀佛在因地本來就發過深重誓願,也就是四十八大願,當他願行成就,完成了光明名號,就能夠攝化十方,使十方眾生來求念。不論是為求往生或是為求現世福利而念這句佛號,都沒關係,都讓你們求、讓你們念,依此願力,十方眾生容易往生極樂世界。

A person who sets forth the Bodhi Mind and wishes to benefit others will present himself as what the Worldly Truths describe – “be considerate in all matters”; “willing to suffer losses without bargain”; “be compassionate and understanding to other people in all matters"; “be humble in success and share blames in failure” in all matters; do not argue with others, or hate them; do not feel ill-treated or dissatisfied; and do not blame others or make complains.

一個心存菩提心、想利益他人的人,所展現出來的就會像宗風所寫的:「凡事是為對方設想」、「凡事肯吃虧、不計較」,凡事為對方帶來「恩慈體貼」,凡事「讓美歸功、分怨共過」,不會與對方爭執,甚至懷恨生氣,不會不平、不滿、抱怨、訴苦。

A text about “rescue particularly the drowned” in the Commentary on the Contemplation Sutra

All Buddhas have great compassion for the suffered, and in their heart take pity in particular on those reincarnated mortal beings. So, they always urge them to return to the Pure Land. It is similar to rescuing people from drowning, priority should be urgently given to those being drowned, not those have already been ashore.

《觀經疏》「溺水偏救」之文:

諸佛大悲於苦者,心偏愍念常沒眾生,是以勸歸淨土。亦如溺水之人,急須偏救;岸上之者,何用濟為。

機法深信

We have been kept in the boundless and endless cycle of reincarnations for numerous lives, and committed offenses of the Five Gravest Transgressions and the Ten Unwholesome Deeds. Our mind holds greed, anger, delusion, arrogance and doubt in store, and all our thoughts, once arise, are going after wealth, sex, fame, foods and sleep. Therefore, our mental mind and physical body are full of the poisons of greed, anger, delusion, arrogance and doubt, as well as the desires for wealth, sex, fame, foods and sleep.

So, whatever we think in our mind are karma and offenses, just as the Ksitigarbha Sutra says, “For all sentient beings in Jambudvipa, what they act and what they think are nothing other than karma and offenses.”

我們生生世世、世世生生在無邊無際的輪迴當中,都曾造做了五逆十惡,內心都蘊藏著貪瞋癡慢疑,起心動念都在追求財色名食睡,因此,我們的內心也好,血肉也好,都充滿了貪瞋癡慢疑的毒素,都充滿了追求財色名食睡的欲望。

所以起心動念都是罪、都是業,就像《地藏經》所講的:南閻浮提眾生,舉止動念,無不是業,無不是罪。

Listening to the Dharma teaching, one should behave as if being present before the Buddha and listen attentively to his words. This is the Buddha’s one-on-one teaching for us. When we listen to the teaching, we should feel being on the site and have a real sense of participation. In this way, we cherish the teaching and respect the teaching, and hence get the benefits from the teaching.

聞法,應該像親身在佛前聆聽一般,是佛對我們一對一的開示,聽法要以親身在場的真實感去聽,這樣才是惜法、重法,也才能得到法益。

Upon attainment in the Perfect Enlightenment, Amitabha Buddha has a threefold body, (1)a Buddha that accomplishes his Fundamental Vow, (2)a Buddha that delivers sentient beings and (3) a Buddha that embraces with light.

When we are reborn, Amitabha Buddha will come and receive, without being invited. So, he is also called a Buddha that receives sentient beings [to be reborn in the Land of Bliss].

阿彌陀佛之成佛有「三身佛」,即:「本願成就之佛」、「救度眾生之佛」、「光明攝取之佛」。當我們往生時,阿彌陀佛不請自來迎接我們,所以也稱為「迎接眾生之佛」。

Do all matters with a true heart. Looking back all actions or practices in the past , one can succeed and achieve just because of, even a bit, a true heart. Sincerity can impress people, as well as animals, even heavenly beings and ghosts who may be moved to cry if sincerity is expressed to the extreme.
凡事真心,千古異行,都成一點真心,真誠能夠感動人,也能夠感動動物;真誠極處,感泣鬼神。
