An excerpt from the ‘Dharma School of Contemplation and Recitation’ by Master Shandao

善導大師《觀念法門》摘句

All past buddhas who uphold the Samadhi of Amitabha-Recitation, supplemented with the Four Matters, rejoice in achieving Buddhahood. The present buddhas in the ten directions also contemplate the Samadhi of Amitabha-recitation as their upholding practice, supplemented with the Four Matters, and rejoice in cultivating Buddhahood. The future buddhas also uphold the Samadhi of Amitabha-Recitation, supplemented with the Four Matters, and rejoice in cultivating Buddhahood.

過去諸佛,持是念阿彌陀佛三昧,四事助歡喜,皆得成佛。 現在十方諸佛,亦持是念佛三昧,四事助歡喜,皆得作佛。 未來諸佛,亦持是念佛三昧,四事助歡喜,皆得作佛。

Shakyamuni appeared in the world in order to deliver sentient beings burdened with the five kinds of turbidity. This means he reveals, with kindness and compassion, the cause of the Ten Evils and the sufferings of retributions in the Three Evil Realms. He enlightens, with equality and wisdom, all human and celestial beings, to dedicate their merits and aspire to be reborn in Amitabha’s Buddhaland.

釋迦出現，為度五濁凡夫，即以慈悲，開示十惡之因，報果三塗之苦；又以平等智慧，悟

入人天，迴生彌陀佛國。

《觀念法門》

When they [those of the lowest level in the low tier] become seriously ill and wish to die, they encounter a good advisor who teaches them to recite Amitabha’s name at least ten times. Through these repeated recitations 8 billion eons of heavy karmic offenses are eradicated.

罪人得病欲死,遇善知識,教稱彌陀佛名十聲,於聲聲中,除滅八十億劫生死重罪。

Those who exclusively practice the Samadhi of Amitabha-invocation are always protected by all celestial beings, the Four Great Celestial Kings, and the Eight Divisions of Dragons and Gods, like shadows wherever they go. They joyfully meet with each other. They are never annoyed or disturbed by evil ghosts, spirits, disasters, obstructions, or jeopardy.

專行此念彌陀佛三昧者，常得一切諸天，及四天大王、龍神八部， 隨逐影護， 愛樂相見；永無諸惡鬼神、災障厄難，橫加惱亂。

Those who are exclusively mindful of Amitabha Buddha in the West, and aspire to be reborn, are always protected by the accompanying 25 bodhisattvas in shadow wherever they go. They don’t let evil ghosts and spirits annoy and disturb practitioners, who are always day and night, secured in peace.

A passage about “the meaning of the Sutra of Protection of the Belief” in the “Dharma School of Contemplation and Recitation”

A person who exclusively recites Amitabha Buddha’s Name with singleness of mind, and aspires to be reborn in the Land of Bliss, always has his belief protected by all Buddhas in the six directions, as many as the sands of the Ganges. That is why the Amitabha Sutra is called the ‘Sutra of Protection of the Belief.’

Another meaning of “Sutra of Protection of the Belief” is, all Buddhas protect Amitabha reciters from evil ghosts and spirits. In so doing, they are spared from critical illnesses, accidental deaths,unexpected jeopardies, or misfortunes. All kinds of disasters and obstructions naturally disappear, unless one’s belief is not true.

《觀念法門》「護念經意」之文:
一心專念，阿彌陀佛，願往生者，此人常得六方恒河沙等佛，共來護念，故名《護念經》。《護念經》意者：亦不令諸惡鬼神得便，亦無橫病、橫死、橫有厄難，一切災障，自然消散；除不至心。

Being accepted to clear and eliminate all their karmic offenses, all iniquitous sentient beings are guaranteed to be embraced and received for rebirth [by Amitabha Buddha]; not to mention those sages who aspire to be reborn, how can they not go there to be reborn?

一切罪惡凡夫，尚蒙罪滅，證攝得生； 何況聖人願生，而不得去也。
