淨宗判教 - 總顯其義


Before the time of Master Honen, Japan had various Mahayana and Theravada schools of Buddhism ; but, not the Pure Land School. Thus, there was no Pure Land Sangha. There were no Pure Land Sutras chosen for practitioners to rely on, and no theoretical framework established for defining the Pure Land teaching. Because of this, no one knew about the specific sutras to rely on or the practices that led to rebirth in the Pure Land.

For generations after generations, practitioners who aspired to be reborn in the Western Pure Land had to attach themselves to other schools, mixing [Amitabha-recitation] with other irrelevant practices, which are then dedicated to others. This is known as an ‘affiliated school.’ Teachings of other schools were used to define the Pure Land of Amitabha Buddha. As a result of this situation the dependent conditions, the resultant beings of the Pure Land, as well as the main cause of rebirth, were interpreted differently and changed from one school to another.

法然上人以前的日本佛教,雖有大小乘各宗派,卻獨缺淨土宗派,所以沒有淨土門的教團,也沒有確立淨土門正依的經典與教相上的理論架構,因此也不知道往生的行體。

雖然當時願生西方淨土的行者,代不乏人,但都依附在各宗門下,雜行雜修,然後迴向,謂之「寓宗」,並且以其各宗之教理來判別彌陀的淨土,因而淨土依正及往生正因,隨各宗的宗義而轉。

淨土述懷


Amitabha Buddha treats sentient beings of the ten directions as his parents, his only son, and himself. He loves, respects, nurtures, and perfects us. This concept is based on the Infinite Life Sutra spoken by the Buddha. When I edited this Sutra, I included this concept in the appendix at the end of the Sutra. For those Pure Land practitioners who wish to preach this teaching, it is best for them to read it thoroughly and memorize it fully, so that they can be more versatile in explaining it.


阿彌陀佛把十方眾生看成祂的父母、祂的獨子、祂本身,而來孝敬我們、撫育我們、成就我們。這些理論的根據都在《佛說無量壽經》,在我所校訂的《佛說無量壽經》後面所附錄的〈無量壽經摘要〉內都有結集,有志於講經佈教的同修,最好能把這些摘要背到滾瓜爛熟,才能運用自如。

淨宗傳承之第十八願


What does the 18th  Vow contain? Three things: faith, Amitabha-recitation, and rebirth. “Sincerely and joyfully entrust themselves to me and desire to be born in my land” are faith; “call my Name, even ten times” is Amitabha-recitation; and “should they not be born there, may I not attain perfect Enlightenment” is rebirth. Amitabha Buddha has already become a Buddha. So, as long as we believe in Amitabha’s deliverance, aspire to be reborn in the Land of Bliss, and recite Amitabha’s Name, we are assured of attaining rebirth.


第十八願講什麼?講三件事情:信心、念佛、往生。

「至心信樂,欲生我國」是信心,「乃至十念」是念佛,「若不生者,不取正覺」是往生。現在阿彌陀佛已經成佛了,我們只要信彌陀的救度,願生極樂而念佛,就必定往生。

Karma of Assurance and Supportive Karma

There are five Primary Practices. They can be divided according to the two kinds of karma – Karma of Assurance and Supportive Karma. The fourth Primary Practice (Name-recitation)is known as the Karma of Assurance, and the other four Primary Practices are regarded as Supportive Karma.

The full name “Karma of Assurance” originates from the passage on “Faith in the Context of Practice” from the Chapter on Non-meditative Virtues, in the Commentary on the Contemplation Sutra. It states that reciting Amitabha’s name single-mindedly and without variation, whether walking, standing, sitting or lying down, whether for long or short periods is the karma of assurance. It is so because it accords with Amitabha Buddha’s 18th Vow.

Supportive Karma means karma that supports the practitioner’s mind in practicing the karma of assurance.


正助二業

五種正行,開為五種,合為正助二業。其中第四稱名正行為正業,前三後一四種正行,為助業。

正業,全稱「正定業」,出自善導大師《觀經四帖疏.散善義》「就行立信」:「一心專念彌陀名號,行住坐臥,不問時節久近,念念不捨者,是名正定之業,順彼佛願故。」

助業者,能助行者之心,行於稱名之正定業,故稱助業。

淨土信仰


It is very difficult for ordinary beings to understand the vast and deep meaning of Amitabha Buddha. With our limited knowledge, perception, and inability to liberate ourselves, how can we possibly describe it? However, we do know that all of the vows that he made, and the merit and virtues that he cultivated, are totally immersed in the Name. So, the Name is Amitabha Buddha himself. The reason he puts all of his merit and virtues into his Name is to facilitate its recitation and the attainment of those benefits for sentient beings like us. So, whether we know this principle or not, as long as we recite his Name, Amitabha Buddha is immediately one with us and we emit his light.


阿彌陀佛的意義以我們凡夫有限的知見,是無法形容、無力思惟、無能解說的,因為祂的意義很廣很深。不過我們知道,阿彌陀佛祂所發願、所修行的功德,通通融入在這句名號當中,所以這句名號就是阿彌陀佛的本身,而之所以將全部功德融入這句名號,就是阿彌陀佛要讓我們眾生容易稱念,容易得到利益。所以不管我們知不知道這個道理,只要稱念這一句名號,阿彌陀佛就在我們口中跳躍,在我們身上放光。

I want to resolve the matter of birth-and-death; but, what I need to do to accomplish that is quite simple. It is enough if I truly believe, earnestly aspire, and recite Amitabha’s Name for rebirth in the Western Land. Even if people spend lots of time reading all of the Great Store Canon, they must still return to faith, aspiration, and practice.


吾人欲了生死,實不在多,只一「真信、切願、念佛求生西方」足矣! 縱饒讀盡大藏,亦不過為成就此事而已。

Thus, it is better to comfort them by steadily and gradually seeking progress, and converting them from enemies to friends. To deal with all matters, we should simply perform our own duties in accordance with the existing conditions. Don’t try to force things, as all worldly matters are balanced by causes and conditions, in terms of production and extinction. If we wish to be released from entanglement, we should fix our minds on Amitabha, and let Amitabha arrange everything.


故宜懷柔平穩,循序漸進,以期化敵為友。應以盡分而隨緣的觀念看待一切。因緣和合的世間,緣起緣滅,不必過分看重。欲求解脫困境,只有繫念彌陀,任佛安排。

淨土述懷


When seeking to reform a great matter avoid impatience, hoping to achieve the desired result speedily. In such a case, one will have the opposite effect and hinder its progress. It is more appropriate to examine and analyze the situation thoroughly.

On one hand, we should follow the traditional practices temporarily, and on the other hand, we should transform them gradually. If we try to transform something thoroughly and all at once, it will inevitably be opposed by others. This is especially true if we deny them vigorously, or point out their faults. In such a case, those opposing the transformation will react negatively and attack us.

凡大事之創新或改革,切忌躁急,或盼速效,此必遭反撲,阻礙進程。總宜審時度勢,一方面暫時順應舊習,一方面從順應中漸次轉化。

若當下欲求全盤徹底改變,難免有反對之人;尤其若激烈否定對方,或糾舉對方,則對方也會對我鳴鼓而攻之。

Primary Practices and Miscellaneous Practices:

“Primary” practices are those that are pure and direct. These are practices that relate purely to Amitabha and the Land of Bliss, and have a direct connection with them. There are Five Kinds of Primary Practices. “Miscellaneous” practices are those that are impure, “mixed”, and “diluted.” In terms of karmic consequences, such practices cover everything from the three human and celestial vehicles, to the pure lands of the ten directions. So they are considered mixed.

In the context of causes, they include all practices except those aimed at rebirth in the Western Pure Land. Therefore, they are considered diluted. To sum up, outside of the Five Kinds of Primary Practices, the various virtues and myriad practices are all considered Miscellaneous.


正雜二行

「正」即純、直。純粹彌陀、極樂之行,與彌陀、極樂直接相關之行,即為正行。正行有五種,稱五種正行。

「雜」即不純、非正,有通雜、間雜二義。從感果來說,其所修行通於人天三乘及十方淨土,稱為通雜。又就行因來說,除西方淨土一行之外,間修餘行,稱為間雜。總之,五種正行之外,諸善萬行悉名雜行。

Primary and Miscellaneous Practices

Primary and Miscellaneous Practices refer to the two categories of practices for rebirth in the Western Land of Bliss. With respect to the different aptitudes and circumstances of the Buddhists at the time of Master Shandao: the practices of recitation of scriptures, reflection, holding precepts, repentance, reverential acts, making offerings, name-recitation, etc. were proposed for rebirth. Master Shandao organized and grouped all practices into Primary Practices and Miscellaneous Practices in the text on “establishment of faith in the context of practice”, the all-time definitive Commentary on the Contemplation Sutra.

As far as aspiration for rebirth in Amitabha’s Pure Land is concerned, there are five kinds of Primary Practices. Apart from the five kinds of Primary Practices, all other virtuous practices are called Miscellaneous Practices, which must be dedicated to rebirth in Amitabha’s Pure Land.

正雜二行

指正行與雜行,是往生西方極樂世界的兩種修行方法。

善導大師針對當時之佛教環境與不同學佛人的根器,曾提到誦經、觀想、持戒、懺悔、禮拜、供養、念佛......等等行持;然,最後於楷定古今之《觀經四帖疏》「就行立信」之處,則予以組織歸納而為正行與雜行二種。亦即,就願生彌陀淨土來講,其正行有五種,除此五種正行之外,其他諸善萬行,統稱為雜行,須用迴向方能往生彌陀淨土。

淨土信仰


All Buddhas appear in their worlds, not just to ask sentient beings to refrain from evil and perform good deeds, in order for them to be reborn in the realm of heaven or the human realm. Whether we are reborn in the realm of heaven or the human realm, we will eventually fall into the Three Wretched Realms once our karmic rewards are spent. So, all Buddhas appear in their worlds in order to ask sentient beings to be reborn in the Land of Bliss, attain Enlightenment, and with compassionate vows return to deliver sentient beings comprehensively. Thus, if we practice the Pure Land teaching exclusively and can teach others to practice the Pure Land teaching, it corresponds to the original intent of all Buddhas appearing in all worlds.


諸佛出世,不是要我們只是去惡行善,以期能出生在天上或人間,因為不論是出生在天上或人間,福報都只是一剎那之間就享盡了,之後又會再墮落三惡道;所以諸佛出世是要我們往生極樂世界,具足菩提,然後倒駕慈航來廣度眾生。因此若我們教導別人學淨土法門,或者我們自己專修淨土法門,這樣就跟佛出世的本懷相應了。

Great Vow – Before Dharmakara Bodhisattva became Amitabha Buddha, he spent five eons practicing meditative virtues in order to create his 48 vows, that create his Pure Land, and set the requirements for our deliverance. The 18th Vow is called the Fundamental Vow, in which Amitabha swore to deliver all who sincerely wish to be reborn in his land, and exclusively recite his Name.

Great Karma – consists of Amitabha’s great accomplishments. Why are they great? Though the great vows were made, they would be empty if Amitabha failed to accomplish them. In order to do this, he pursued the bodhisattva practices for countless eons and, upon their accomplishment, made them readily available for us.

Great Power – is the unconditioned and flawless power of merit and virtues within the Name, and the embracing power of his unimpeded light. Amitabha shares. All of his merit and virtues with iniquitous sentient beings, who continuously commit offenses and suffer in the Three Wretched Realms and the Six Realms of existence, as long as they encounter ordinary conditions. However, we will be reborn to become Buddhas if we encounter Amitabha Buddha’s Other Power resulting from his great vows, great karma, and great power.


「大願」,就是阿彌陀佛當法藏菩薩的時候,為了救度我們,以五劫的時間去思惟後,考慮出容易救度我們的四十八願來,這就叫做「本願」。祂這個本願,是為我們而發的。

「大業」,就是指大的行為,什麼是大的行為呢?就是阿彌陀佛,雖然發了願,發了願如果沒有付諸實踐,這是空願,不能達到目的,所以必須實踐;阿彌陀佛經過了兆載永劫,去行菩薩萬行,可以說祂這個行,是為我們而修的。

「大力」,就是無礙光明的攝取力和無為、無漏的名號功德力。罪業凡夫遇普通之緣,則依然三塗六道,造業造罪、受苦受難之凡夫;若遇阿彌陀佛大願業力之增上緣,則往生成佛。

淨宗判教 - 總顯其義


Generally, the Buddhist teachings are divided into the Sacred Gate/ the Path of Importance and the Path of the Great Vow/ the Pure Land Gate.

The Path of Importance is further divided into the meditative and non-meditative virtues. The Meditative virtues are the thirteen contemplations, and the non-meditative virtues are the Three Meritorious Deeds at Nine Levels.

We should read the Contemplation Sutra in order to understand the Three Meritorious Deeds at Nine Levels, which belong to the teaching of both self-power and other-power. Those teachings dedicate self-power practices to Amitabha Buddha (other-power), so that other-power can deliver us. Thus, it is a teaching of other-power resulting from self-power.

The Path of the Great Vow purely results from the dedication of other-power. “Other” is Amitabha Buddha. It is Amitabha’s power, merit and virtues shared with us, so that we possess them unconditionally. What does Amitabha dedicate to us? His great vows, great karma, and great power.

佛法大致分為「聖道門」和「淨土門」,淨土門裏有「要門」、「弘願門」。

「要門」則分「定」跟「散」,「定」就是「十三觀」,「散」是「三福九品」。

三福九品必須看《觀無量壽經》才能夠了解,這是屬於「自他二力」的法門,自力迴向給阿彌陀佛──他力,使他力能夠救度我們,所以說是他力中的自力法門。

「弘願門」呢,是純粹「他力迴向」過來的,「他」是指阿彌陀佛,是阿彌陀佛將祂的力量、功德,迴向給我們,使我們白白就能夠擁有的,那麼祂迴向什麼給我們呢?就是「大願」、「大業」、「大力」。

It is easy for people to be blinded by flattering speech without knowing it is wrong. However, the words that people may not like to hear contain the Buddha’s grace and compassionate heart. Mundane people are like worms in manure. They fight for their defiled dwellings, as they do not know what the pure land is. They are happy to live in that dirty place, and do not realize the benefits of living within the clean stream.

As monastics, we should be role models of bodhisattva practice, and not be deluded by sexual desires. We should guard even the tiniest seed of those dangerous thoughts and not let it grow. We should take measures to prevent the commitment of any offenses, and strictly uphold the precepts against ridicule and suspicion.


順耳之語容易使人汩沒而不知;反而逆耳之言藏著佛恩的悲心。世人猶如糞中穢蟲,爭處不知清淨,樂穢不喜清流。

我等既為沙門,立身行道,則不可為色所迷,為情所困;應防微杜漸,防患未然,嚴守譏嫌之戒。

淨土述懷


My master always said, “A monastic has to overcome three temptations – fame, wealth, and sexual attraction. One is much harder to bypass than the others. So, in order to avoid ridicule and suspicion, we should keep our distance from those we might be sexually attracted to. If this is not possible, we must pay attention to the interests of the whole, and maintain a sense of propriety.”

These were compassionate words spoken by my master from the bottom of his heart. They were just like the Buddha’s sincere advice and also like Master Shinran’s criticism of acting on sexual desire, and pursuing fame and wealth. The outcome will inevitably be pitiful, shameful, and heartbreaking.

The danger originates with a tiny thought that is allowed to grow, until it manifests in action. So, as a Buddhist, one should be aware of that tiny thought, and not let it grow. One should be careful, especially when on their own. A true practitioner inwardly renounces such desires and acts appropriately in such circumstances.

家師上人曾言:「出家人有三關:名關、利關、色關,一關比一關困難,所以必須避免男女相處的譏嫌,萬一不能,則應知守大體、有分寸。」

家師的語重心長,如同佛陀殷謹的垂誡,亦如親鸞上人敏銳地對於愛欲廣海、名利大山的可悲、可恥、可傷。事情不生於發生之時,乃由微而著,是故君子防微杜漸,必慎其獨;而學道之人見機而作,知非即捨。

Ever since the Sui dynasty, certain great masters interpreted the 18th Vow based on the theology of their own schools. Because of that approach, it was inevitable that their interpretations deviated from the guiding principles and characteristics of the Pure Land School. In this way they misinterpreted the correct meaning of the 18th Vow.


隋朝以來有些大德依各自宗門的教理思想解釋淨土宗或解釋第十八願,則難免偏離淨土宗的宗旨與特色,也錯解了第十八願的真正意涵。

There are fifteen benefits in the present life and in the future life:

1. Amitabha positions himself above our heads

2. We are Protected by the Buddha’s light

3. We are Supported by all Buddhas

4. We are Accompanied by Bodhisattvas

5. We are Safeguarded by spirits

6. Elimination of bad karma

7. Accumulation of good fortune and wisdom

8. Avoidance of disasters

9. Longevity and health

10. A good death

11. Attainment of the karma of assurance

12. Being freed from repeated reincarnation

13. Rebirth in the Pure Land

14. Attainment of Buddhahood

15. Comprehensive deliverance of sentient beings

Among these, the first eleven are related to benefits in the present life and the last

four are related to the future life.


「現當二益」略說有十五種:第一、彌陀住頂;第二、佛光護身;第三、諸佛護念;第四、菩薩相隨;第五、冥眾護持;第六、消除罪障;第七、增長福慧;第八、離諸厄難;第九、能得壽康;第十、將獲善終;第十一、入正定聚;第十二、斷除輪迴;第十三、往生淨土;第十四、成就佛果;第十五、廣度眾生。

其中前十一種屬於「現世利益」,後四種屬於「往生利益」。

淨土小常識


The two kinds of benefits in the present life and in the future life – There are two kinds of benefits, one for the present life and the other for the future life. The benefits in the present life refer to the safety and stability of our physical bodies and the benefits in the future life refer to rebirth in the Pure Land near the end-of-life.

The two kinds of benefits result from Amitabha-recitation. Both benefits are included within this single Name, and within the single practice of Amitabha-recitation. If a person upholds other practices such as: reciting other Buddha’s names, practicing according to the Chapter on the Universal Doors, the Diamond Sutra, the Sutra on the Medicine Buddha, or reciting the name of the Medicine Buddha, he can also gain benefits for the present life. However, gaining benefits in both the present life and the future life is unique to Pure Land teaching, as it flows from the unique vow made only by Amitabha Buddha.

現當二益

「現」是現世,「當」是當來,「二益」是兩種利益。「現當二益」即指現世身心安穩,臨終往生淨土這兩種利益。

現當二益即是念佛,此兩種利益都攝在一句名號當中,攝在念佛一行當中。修持餘佛餘行,如修持《普門品》《金剛經》《藥師經》、稱念藥師佛等,也都能獲得「現世一益」;但獨有「現當二益」,是唯有彌陀才擁有的。

淨土信仰


The merit and virtues of teaching others to practice Amitabha-recitation for their deliverance are very great. It is born of great compassion and great wisdom. Why? It is because, upon rebirth, they will cease reincarnating within the Six Realms and become Buddhas. What could be more compassionate than this?

Nevertheless, those people must possess great virtuous roots and great meritorious blessings, to be fortunate enough to hear and exclusively recite Amitabha’s Name, with the aspiration to be reborn in the Land of Bliss.


以念佛的法門來教導人家,這一種救度對方的功德非常的大,可說是大慈悲、大智慧。為什麼?因為只要能夠讓對方往生,不但離開六道輪迴,而且到那裏就成佛了,有比這個更慈悲的嗎?有比這個更有智慧的嗎?不過,這個人也必須要有大善根、大福德,才有福氣專念這一句名號,願生極樂。

終時正意念彌陀,見佛慈光來照身;

淨宗判教 - 總顯其義


Whether Buddhist teachings belong to the Small Vehicle or Great Vehicle, their starting and finishing point is“purity”. So, it is said that the meanings of Buddhist teachings are immeasurable; however, the fundamental one is “purity”.

Nevertheless. in order to reach this realm there are two methods, one being the Sacred Gate and the other being the Pure Land Gate. According to the Sacred Gate, a practitioner must rely on his own power; so, the patriarchs labeled it the Difficult Path. The Pure Land Gate is very easy, because a practitioner is supported and strengthened by Amitabha’s power; so, it is called the Easy Path.


佛法不論小乘、大乘,都以「淨」為出發點,以「淨」為歸宿,故說「佛法無量義,一以淨為本」。

不過要達到這個境界,有兩種方法:一種是「聖道門」,一種就是「淨土門」。依聖道門要達到這種境界,因為要靠自己的力量,祖師判定為「難行道」,非常困難。淨土門就很容易,因為是靠佛的加持,所以叫「易行道」。

After dwelling in the meditative state for 5 eons, Amitabha continued to practice diligently for us throughout countless more eons, in order to accumulate immeasurably great merit and virtues, and fulfill the vow stating “if all sentient beings are unable to be reborn, may I not attain perfect Enlightenment” As Amitabha has vowed to embrace all sentient beings who exclusively recite his Name, what can you be afraid of?

With this one thought, we should feel at ease, and our doubts should all be cleared. All people with all kinds of heavy karmic offenses suddenly receive special amnesty, and their heavy accumulated debts are all eliminated. The retribution of reincarnation over hundreds and thousands of eons halts in a flash.

As the body and mind are relieved, we are moved to cry as we cannot hold back our emotions. Depression we have struggled with for a very long time is gone in a moment. We cry out loud and tears of joy run down like an overflowing reservoir.


五劫思惟兆載苦行,正為你預修;若不生者不取正覺,正為你完成;無邊大利無上功德,皆為你準備;念佛眾生攝取不捨,你何懼之有!

如此一念之間,忽然心安,疑慮盡除。罪業滿身之人,頓蒙大赦;負債累累之身,一時得贖;千生萬劫輪迴之報,剎那停止。

身心輕利,感淚難抑,長時積鬱,一時得解,猶如水庫泄洪,嚎啕大哭。

淨土述懷


The highest value in life is to believe and accept Amitabha’s deliverance. The greatest joy is to be embraced by Amitabha’s light. During our short-term stay in the guesthouse of this world, if we can come across this teaching, this life is regarded as being worthwhile.

Though we are inferior in body and slow-witted in mind, we always have Amitabha beside us. Though we are still living in the Saha Land, we have already joined the group of sacred beings in the Land of Bliss, isn’t it joyful?

人生最高的價值,就是信受彌陀的救度;最大的喜悅是被彌陀的光明擁抱。在這短暫的客舍,能逢此法,已是不虛此行。雖然身心愚劣,日夜有彌陀相隨;雖然尚在娑婆,已入極樂聖眾。豈不快哉!
