Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teaching about Classification of Teachings – the Two Practices (Primary and Miscellaneous)

Before Master Shandao, the patriarchs of other schools also explained the Pure Land teaching. However, they were inevitably unable to fully conform to the aspiration of Amitabha Buddha, because they were unable to fully accommodate the aptitudes of sentient beings in the ten directions. Only the Five Primary Practices developed by Master Shandao conform to Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow and accommodate the aptitudes of sentient beings in the ten directions.
After Master Shandao, the patriarchs of other schools also expounded the Pure Land scriptures, and propagated the Pure Land teaching. However, most of them explained the Pure Land teaching from the standpoints of their own and other schools. As a result, their explanations were not based on the pristine Pure Land teaching; but, were mixed with and seen through the lenses of other schools.

在善導大師之前,其他宗派的祖師也有解釋淨土法門的,但都不是以淨土的教理來解釋淨土的經論,因此所解釋的難免不能完全契應阿彌陀佛的願心,也不能完全適應十方眾生的根機,只有善導大師所開展的五正行,是上契彌陀的本願,下契十方眾生的根機。
善導大師之後,也有祖師在闡揚淨土的經論,弘揚淨土的法門,可是大部分都是以其他宗派的教理,站在其他宗派的立場上來解釋淨土教理,因此所解釋出來的就不是純粹在開展淨土法門,而是摻雜了其他宗派的思想。

Faith is Based on Accepting the Teachings as Fact

As Pure Land Buddhists we believe in the existence of Amitabha Buddha and all that is taught in the Three Pure Land Sutras. This comprises the content of our faith. For instance, “sincerely and joyfully entrust” as said by Amitabha Buddha [in his 18th Vow] is very specific; as is, “recite my Name” as explained very specifically by Master Shandao. Regardless of our feelings or moods, “recite my Name” never changes whatsoever.

When we exclusively recite Amitabha’s Name, we are assured of rebirth. It doesn’t matter who you are, anyone can do it. Whether you are wise or unwise, emotional or rational, and whether you fully understand the teachings or not, all can be reborn.



信以客觀為據

阿彌陀佛的客觀存在就是我們所信的內容。阿彌陀佛怎樣講,我們就怎樣接受,他所講的才是我們所信的具體對象。阿彌陀佛所講的「至心信樂」,善導大師解釋為「稱我名號」,這就非常具體。不論我們的心情、感受如何,「稱我名號」始終都是不變的。

「稱我名號」就必定往生,所謂「眾生稱念,必得往生」,這是不論任何人都能做得到的。也就是說,不論你是有智慧的人,還是沒智慧的人,不論你是偏於感性的,還是偏於理性的,都能夠理解,都能夠做到。

Ever since I received and accepted this body, it has committed the Ten Unwholesome Deeds that offend sentient beings.
I have no filial piety, slander the Three Jewels, committed the Five Gravest Transgressions and other non-virtuous deeds.
Because of all of these karmic offenses, I am a prisoner of my false and inverted thoughts.
I deserve to have the retribution of immeasurable suffering. I prostrate myself to the Buddha and repent, hoping my karmic offenses will be eradicated.

自從無始受身來,恆以十惡加眾生;
不孝父母謗三寶,造作五逆不善業。
以是眾罪因緣故,妄想顛倒生纏縛;
應受無量生死苦,頂禮懺悔願滅除。

# 9 – “You have to be mindful of the Buddha with a non-inverted mind, then you will be received by Amitabha Buddha, and be reborn”. Is this true?
Comment:
No, this is incorrect. People reverse the sequence in reading the Sutra. The Amitabha Sutra says, “When that person approaches the point of death, Amitabha Buddha and the sacred assembly will appear before him. When death comes, his mind will not be severely confused.”
So, his mind is not severely confused because of the appearance of Amitabha Buddha and the sacred beings. In other words, Amitabha-recitation during our lives is the cause, and the appearance of Amitabha Buddha and the sacred beings near the end-of-life is the effect. The appearance of Amitabha Buddha and the sacred beings near the end-of-life is the cause, and the mind not being severely confused is the effect.
Exclusive Amitabha-reciters need not worry whether “their minds will be severely confused”, as Amitabha Buddha will enable us to have minds that are not severely confused or inverted.

淨宗法師 - 念佛人的糊塗認識
其九:“念佛要念到心不顛倒,阿彌陀佛才來接我,我才能往生。” 是嗎?
答:
不是這回事情,這個是把經文的次第關係就顛倒了。《阿彌陀經》裏說的臨終心不顛倒是因聖眾現前。
即:平生專持佛名是因,臨終佛聖現前是果;臨終佛聖現前是因,命終心不顛倒是果。專修念佛的人,不要怕“心不顛倒”,阿彌陀佛有辦法讓我們心不顛倒。

The practice that Master Shandao emphasized is “the recitation of Amitabha’s Name in accordance with his Fundamental Vow”. This is very different from other masters who talked about Amitabha-recollection as the Real Mark in contemplation, accumulation of merit and virtues, the accomplishment of various spiritual skills, etc. It is based on the Fundamental Vow that Dharmakara Bodhisattva, an incarnation of Amitabha Buddha, made to deliver all sentient
beings in the causal ground. Thus, by simply practicing the exclusive recitation of Amitabha’s Name, one can be reborn in the Land of Bliss with reliance on Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow. Thus, it is called “name-recitation in accordance with the Fundamental Vow”. It means, if we practice name-recitation in accordance with the Fundamental Vow, we are assured of rebirth in the Pure Land.

善導大師所說之念佛,與其他諸師所說之實相、觀想或累積功德、成就工夫之念佛不同,而是「本願念佛」,是以阿彌陀佛於因位名為法藏菩薩之時所發起救度一切眾生之「本願」為其基礎,只要稱名念佛便是乘上彌陀本願而被救往生彌陀淨土,此謂之「本願念佛」,亦即依「本願念佛,必生淨土」。

Master Shandao divides the teachings about practices for rebirth in the Land of Bliss into two: the first is the Primary Practices, and the second is the Miscellaneous Practices. If they are subdivided, there are three. Within the Primary Practices, there are the Supportive Karma and the Karma of Assurance.

善導大師將往生極樂世界的行門分為二種:一種是「正行」,一種是「雜行」;若再細分則有三種,亦即「正行」裏面又分「助業」與「正定業」。

No Need to Verify with a Seal (continued)

Because people have different psychological states, which change according to external circumstances, it is difficult to keep one’s faith consistently strong. The content of faith is not substantial, but abstract. (Not to mention that afflictions can occur suddenly) We cannot seek the delighted mind that we experienced before. If we do, the following question may arise: “At one time I was elated by learning about Amitabha’s deliverance? I like that feeling of delight, but I cannot feel it now?” This is a kind of affliction when one keeps seeking verification about whether one has faith or not. Thus, one should know it is incorrect to view our emotions as the barometer for the value of our faith.

由於人的心理狀態各有不同,而且隨著環境而變化,如果依此作為信的內容,那就難以堅固,抽象不具體。何況煩惱一旦浮現了,以前的那種歡喜的心再也找不到,他就會打一個問號:

「我在什麼時候,什麼情形之下,對彌陀的救度是那樣感動,那種感覺讓我很有法喜,可是現在好像一點都體會不到了。」這就是為了印證自己到底信了沒有而有所苦惱。由此可知,錯把自己的感情作為所信的內容、所信的對象,這就不對了。

No Need to Verify with a Seal

Master Shandao interprets “sincerely and joyfully entrust in me and wish to be reborn in my Land” as “recite my Name and aspire to be reborn in my Land” in Amitabha’s 18th Vow. It is simple, easy to understand and practice.

There is, of course, a profound concept behind the Pure Land teaching; however, Master Shandao explains it in a simplified way, so that people can easily understand and practice it. It is really acting based on knowing.

Thus, we need not verify and seal it, wondering “Do I already believe and accept it sufficiently? Have I been given true entrusting? Is my faith correct or incorrect?” Some explanations do not abide by Master Shandao’s “recite my Name and aspire to be reborn in my Land”; but, rely upon their own beliefs in certain psychological states.

無需印證

善導大師將第十八願的「至心信樂,欲生我國」解釋為「稱我名號,願生我國」,可說簡而不繁,易而不難,淺而不深,明而不昧,不繁雜、不玄奧。

固然淨土法門背後有深遠玄奧的義理,可是,善導大師深入淺出的解釋,使人一看就懂,一懂就能用,真正可以即知即行。

因此,我們不需要求印證:「我到底信受了沒有?領受了沒有?我所信受的到底是正確、還是不正確?」有的解釋不依據善導大師的「稱我名號,願生我國」,而是就信的某種心理狀態去解釋。

We deal with trivial daily matters quickly in the human world. We are not aware that time flies, day by day and year by year.
It is like candle light flickering in the wind, so difficult to keep burning. We have no important destinations within the busy Six Realms.
Since none of us can be liberated from the sea of suffering, how can we feel relaxed without any fear?
When each of us hears about the strong augmentative power [of Amitabha’s deliverance], we should urge ourselves to aspire to dwell in the permanent realm of Nirvana.

人間匆匆營眾務,不覺年命日夜去;
如燈風中滅難期,忙忙六道無定趣.
未得解脫出苦海,云何安然不驚懼;
各聞強健有力時,自策自勵求常住.

General Confusion and Misunderstandings by Amitabha-Reciters seeking Rebirth in the Pure Land - By Master Jingzong
淨宗法師談念佛人的糊塗認識

# 8 – “ Since exclusive Amitabha-recitation, with faith and aspiration, enables me to attain rebirth in the Pure Land; I need not abide by the precepts because my karmic offenses will not affect my rebirth.” Is this correct?
Comment:
Master Shandao criticized this point in his Commentary on the Contemplation Sutra saying: this person still clings to the concept of blessings and offenses. They believe that cultivating for blessings are wrong and committing offenses is right. Holding this deviant view, they proclaim that their devout faith is the cause of rebirth, and it doesn’t matter if they are iniquitous ordinary beings. Thus, they commit offenses without shame and say, “ we are practitioners of the “other-power” teaching, and our rebirth is assured with recourse to the vow power of Amitabha Buddha.” In fact, they misinterpret Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow and will descend further, even though they seek transcendental ascent.
A person who studies and practices according to Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow should know he is an iniquitous ordinary being, who should regret and repent, be humble and gentle, and should try to refrain from evil and increase his good acts. We should not break the bones of our legs because there is a god-like doctor who can perfectly reset our broken bones. Shakyamuni Buddha emphasizes the Middle Way; so, Buddhists should not go to extremes. When Amitabha - Buddha says blessings and offenses are not taken into account for rebirth through Amitabha-recitation, it does not mean the Buddha is encouraging people to commit offenses and perform evil. We are ordinary beings who prefer to take the easy way out and fall into the trap of duality.

其八: “既然信願念佛就可以往生,那麼就不必持戒,造點罪業也沒有關係。” 對嗎?
答:
這個善導大師在《觀經疏》中專門作了批判:此等之人,猶在問罪福之中,以修福為非,造罪為是。執此邪見,自謂信心決定,是淨土之因。亦有稱自身是罪惡凡夫故,放縱三業,任情為惡,都無慚愧。故言:“我實他力行人,乘佛願力,定得往生。”如此等輩,與彌陀本願不相應,可謂“欲求超升,反更沉淪”。
學本願之人,既知自己是罪惡凡夫,則生慚愧懺悔,心存謙卑柔軟,而思棄惡行善。我們不能因為有了能令“破鏡重合”的神醫存在,而故意砸斷自己的腿,去讓神醫再接。佛法是中道法,不能走極端,說念佛可以不問罪福往生,不是鼓勵人去造罪作惡,我們凡夫之人就喜歡從反面去思考,落入二元對立中。

The recitation of Amitabha’s Name is incomparable to any other Buddhist teachings or practices, because its power and effects are Infinite. The practice of reciting the Name is absolutely splendid. It is the core principle of the Pure Land teaching of the Shandao lineage.
All other masters see Amitabha as one of the Real Marks. They see Amitabha-recollection as just another form of Contemplation. They also teach the Six Paramitas and a myriad of other practices that they view as superior to Amitabha- recitation. However, Master Shandao, an incarnation of Amitabha, deeply knows that the Name contains an absolute value, that no other
practices can compare with.
Thus, Master Shandao says in the Chapter on Meditative Virtues in his Commentary on the Contemplation Sutra, “Though other practices are called “virtuous ", none of them are comparable to Amitabha-recitation. These are the characteristics within the practice of Amitabha-recitation, as taught by Master Shandao.

名號勝諸行,與任何之行相比,名號都是絕對性的殊勝之行,這是淨土宗善導流的特質。
其他諸師皆以實相念佛、觀想念佛或六度萬行為勝行,以稱名念佛為劣行;然,彌陀示現的善導大師深知名號具有絕對性之價值,非其餘諸行所可比較。
而於《觀經疏》「定善義」言:自餘眾行,雖名是善,若比念佛者,全非比較也。此是善導大師「稱名說」之特色。

要弘二門判

On Path of the Great Vow, the main cause of rebirth in the Pure Land is exclusive recitation of Amitabha Buddha’s Name. The content of the Great Vow can be fully accepted by all sentient beings in the ten directions when practicing the Pure Land Path. This is also the reason the Pure Land teaching is called the Easy Path, and is the body and substance of the Pure Land Path.
On the Path of Importance, the content of the meditative and non-meditative virtues are not the same as that of the Path of the Great Vow. Most people are unable to accumulate these virtues because the practices are quite difficult. Hence, it does not contain the body and substance of the Pure Land teaching.

往生正因是弘願門的專稱佛名;這是弘願的內容,也是十方眾生所堪,是淨土門之所以稱為易行道的原因,淨土一門的教體。
而要門的定善與散善不是弘願的內容,十方眾生大多不堪,是難行非易行,所以不是淨土門的教體。

The Ultimate Principle of Becoming a Buddha by Delivering Sentient Beings

Master Yinguang says, “If sentient beings in the nine realms eliminate this Dharma, they will be unable to achieve the complete and perfect Buddhist Way above.

All Buddhas in the ten directions, who renounce this Dharma, are unable to comprehensively and universally deliver or benefit all kinds of sentient beings.”

Sentient beings of the nine realms include the three kinds of sacred beings and six kinds of

ordinary beings (all realms from bodhisattvas to hell beings, except the Buddha’s). If a sentient being does not practice the Pure Land teaching, “believing in and accepting Amitabha’s deliverance, exclusively reciting Amitabha’s Name, and aspiring to be reborn in Amitabha’s Pure Land”, he will be unable to completely accomplish the Buddha Way. It is the same for all Buddhas in the ten directions. If they do not offer this teaching, they will be unable to universally deliver sentient beings in the ten directions.

成佛度生之極則

印光大師說:九界眾生離此法,上不能圓成佛道;十方諸佛捨此法,下不能普利群生。

九界(三聖六凡,除佛界,自菩薩界至地獄界)的眾生,如果離開「信受彌陀救度、專稱彌陀佛名、願生彌陀淨土」的淨土法門,就不能圓滿成就佛果;十方諸佛也是一樣,離開了這個法門,也不能普遍地救度十方眾生。

I always wish that, near the end-of-life, all of the encounters that appear before me are splendid scenes under splendid circumstances.
I hope that I will see Amitabha, the Master of Great Compassion , Avalokitesvara, Mahasthamaprapta and all honorable sacred beings.
With my head up, I wish that Amitabha will emit his divine light and receive me with his hand; so that I can be reborn in his Pure Land with recourse to his Fundamental Vow.

恒願一切臨終時,勝緣勝境悉現前,
願睹彌陀大悲主,觀音勢至十方尊,
仰願神光蒙授手,乘佛本願生彼國。

General Confusion and Misunderstandings by Amitabha-Reciters in regard to Rebirth - By Master Jingzong
淨宗法師談念佛人的糊塗認識

#7 - “Since I am unable to be reborn by mindfulness of the Buddha, how can I be reborn by reciting this single name? Do I have to increase my recitations to 30,000 or even 50,000 times a day for another 30 to 50 years?! Then, when I am near the end-of-life at last, will I be able to be reborn at that moment?” Am I understanding correctly?
Comment:
For those who hold this view, it can be said to be “the effect in a future period of time”. It means: When you recite the Buddha’s name now, but you cannot attain rebirth at the moment of recitation. You have to accumulate a certain level in order to be reborn. “Other” means “not at this moment”, “not right now”. So, thinking that one cannot be reborn through Amitabha-recitation in the present moment is incorrect.
According to Master Shandao’s explanation, every single Amitabha-recitation, with faith and aspiration, is complete. Within the substance of every single recitation, the merit and virtues required for us to attain rebirth in the Land of Bliss are immediately fulfilled. Thus, the above view is not correct.

淨宗法師 - 念佛人的糊塗認識
其七:“我現在念佛還不能往生,現在念這一句佛號哪能往生?一定要積累到每天三萬五萬,然後再積累三十年五十年,到最後要臨終了,那個時候才能往生。” 對嗎?
答:
如果抱這種觀點的人,也可以講叫“別時意”。就是:現在念佛,當念不能往生,要累積到某種程度,才可以往生。這個“別”,就是不在當下、不在“即時”,認為當下、即時念佛不能往生,這是錯誤的。
按照善導大師的解釋:我們念佛,念念之間,具足願行。念念、聲聲,每一聲名號的當下本體,就具足讓我們往生極樂世界這樣的功德。所以上面那種認識是錯誤的。

善導大師的淨土教理是「必得往生」的法門,是「定得往生」的法門,是「易得往生」的法門,是「皆得往生」的法門,是「齊同不退」的法門。

要弘二門判

Contemplating a Buddha is a self-powered and very difficult practice. It is not specified in Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow, it doesn’t abide by the original intent of Shakyamuni Buddha, and not all sentient beings in the ten directions are capable of doing so. However, Amitabha-recitation is the Other-Powered Easy Path, which is specified in Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow. It fulfills the original intent of Shakyamuni Buddha and all sentient beings in the ten directions are capable of doing it.
Master Shandao established the two paths in Pure Land Buddhism, the Path of Importance and the Path of the Great Vow. These were based on the two objectives of the Contemplation Sutra, namely, the Samadhi through Contemplation of the Buddha, and Recitation of the Buddha’s Name.
However, Master Shandao later abandoned the Samadhi through Contemplation of the Buddha ( as set forth in the Path of Importance) and established the Path of the Great Vow.This means he established the Samadhi through Recitation of the Buddha’s Name, which is actually one of its objectives.
It bears the explicit objective (Contemplation of the Buddha) and the implicit objective (Recitation of the Buddha), as well as, the expedient teaching of the Path of Importance and the real teaching of the Path of the Great Vow respectively.
In other words, it is a measure taken by Shakyamuni Buddha to lead those on the Sacred Path onto the Pure Land Path, and lead those on the Pure Land Path from the Path of Importance to the Great Vow - Amitabha-Recitation in accordance with Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow.

「觀佛」是自力難行之道,既非彌陀本願,也非釋尊本懷,更非十方眾生所能;而「念佛」是他力易行之道,是彌陀本願,釋尊本懷,十方眾生所能。
從「要弘二門」的「念觀兩宗」到「要弘廢立」(廢要門立弘願)、「念觀廢立」(廢觀立念)的「念佛一宗」,有「從假入真」(從方便入真實)的隱顯之意,亦即此是釋尊為了引導聖道門的諸種機類進入淨土門,再由淨土門中的要門導歸彌陀本願之弘願念佛的施設。

To Renounce the Defiled Land and Admire the Pure Land (continued)

4. Actually, it is more difficult to be born as a human being than to be reborn in the Pure Land near the end-of-life. One will definitely fall into one of the wretched realms if not reborn in Amitabha’s Pure Land. The benefits of rebirth in the West are far greater than attaining the Way.

5. To benefit others, one should first benefit oneself. If we cannot exit the cycle of birth-and-death, how can we help others to do it? If we cannot reach the shore of the sea of suffering, how can we rescue those who are on the brink of drowning in the same sea?

6. By attaining rebirth in the West, one can preach the Dharma and deliver sentient beings at will, without any obstructions.

7. Don’t worry that you are unable to become a Buddha, as a Buddha never fails to preach the Dharma to deliver sentient beings.

8. [Amitabha’s Name] is like a drop of water from the divine dragon, which rains down upon the entire world. A false dragon is incapable of entering the sea.

厭穢欣淨 (續)

4. 來生做人比臨終往生還難,不生西方將來必墮惡道,生西利益比得道利益更大 。

5. 欲利他先須能自利,若非自己能先出生死,何能度彼生死眾生;自己在苦海中未能出,何能遍救苦海之人。

6. 求生西方方能宏法利生,任運度眾,自在無礙。

7. 只怕不成佛,不愁佛不會說法度眾生。

8. 如神龍一滴水,遍灑天下。不是真龍不入海。

It says in the Notes on Articles written by Master Yinguang:

1. One is not able to escape reincarnation through practicing worldly virtues. Comparing the pure karma of rebirth replete with faith and aspiration, the karma of worldly virtues is “evil.”

2. One should set forth the mind that aspires to be reborn in the West near the end-of-life. Don’t say that, being a lay person, you are not ready to accept it. You would rather wait to become a heavenly king or monastic, one who attains multiple enlightenments and the great Dharani upon hearing the Dharma. Only then can you preach the Dharma to benefit sentient beings? This thinking should be regarded as “poison”! You should make every effort to avoid it, and any thought of accepting a body in the next life.

3. The original purpose for practicing diligently is to end the suffering of birth-and-death. Therefore, it is the top priority for all Buddhists to end the suffering of birth-and-death, otherwise you are in grave danger. If a Buddhist is unable to exit Samsara, he is bound to fall into the Three Wretched Realms. With this understanding, we should strive to end the suffering of birth-and-death in this lifetime.

《印光大師文鈔》言:

1. 世間善業,不出輪迴;若對信願具足之往生淨業,則彼善業,仍屬惡業 。

2. 當須發決定心,臨終定欲往生西方。且莫說碌碌庸人之身,不願更受,即為人天王身,及出家為僧,一聞千悟,得大總持,大宏法化,普利眾生之高僧身,亦視之若毒荼罪藪,決定不生一念欲受之心。

3. 修行用功,原為了生死。故凡學佛,必須先為了生死;生死不了,危險太大;輪迴未出,難免墮落。努力今生,以了生死。

The Commentary on the Treatise on Rebirth says, “

1.”Among all of the various virtues practiced by ordinary beings in the human and celestial realms, their karmic consequences are determined by how good or evil they are. Such causes and effects are totally inverted and conditioned; so, they are called “unreal merits and virtues”.

2. The Three Domains are: conditioned in form, contaminated in form, inverted in form, destructive in form, cyclic in form, and endless in form.

3. The Three Domains are the dark house where ordinary mortal beings reincarnate in the cycle of birth and death.

4. The Three Domains are produced from the outflow of the demonic way. Sentient beings live in an endless dream without realizing they need to be awakened.

The Lotus Sutra says, “There is no peace in the Three Domains. They are like a burning house, which is filled with all kinds of suffering. It is extremely horrifying.

The Infinite Life Sutra says, “ Understanding that the Three Domains are full of raging fire, one should strive to hear this teaching [of Amitabha’s deliverance], sincerely and joyfully entrust oneself to him, and exclusively recite his Name.”

1. 凡夫人天諸善,人天果報,若因若果,皆是顛倒,皆是虛偽,是故名不實功德。

2. 三界是虛偽相、污染相、顛倒相、破壞相、輪轉相、無窮相。

3. 三界是生死凡夫流轉之暗宅。

4. 三界是有漏邪道所生,長寢大夢,莫知希出。

《法華經》言:「三界無安,猶如火宅,眾苦充滿,甚可怖畏。」

《無量壽經》言:「設有大火,充滿三千大千世界,要當過此,聞是經法,歡喜信樂,受持讀誦,如說修行。」

To Renounce the Defiled Land and Admire the Pure Land

The Smaller Sutra says, “All sentient beings who hear this teaching should aspire to be reborn in that land.”

“Those who hear of that land should aspire to be born there.”

“ Good men and women who have faith in Amitabha should aspire to be reborn in his land.”

The Commentary on the Contemplation Sutra says, “All Buddhas appear in the world to advise and deliver sentient beings through various expedient means. They do not ask them to refrain from doing evil and to cultivate worldly blessings, in order to enjoy human and heavenly happiness. Human and heavenly joys last only as long as a flash of lightning. They will have to be renounced in a short while, when they have to return to the Three Wicked Realms, and suffer once again for a long period of time.

“Because of their causal conditions, [the Buddhas] advise and urge them to aspire to be reborn in the Pure Land, and look forward to unsurpassed Enlightenment / Bodhi. That is why I take this opportunity to urge you to vow to be reborn in the Pure Land. This is known as the original

intent of all Buddhas.”

The Fivefold Turbidites flourish near the end of the Dharma-Ending Age
It is much more difficult for sentient beings with distorted and wicked views to believe the [Buddhist teachings].
Though people are compassionately advised to focus on the Pure Land Path , they disregard it and remain on their own paths.
Because people continue to practice non-Buddhist teachings, they will reincarnate for countless eons.
If they only developed faith in Amitabha’s fundamental vow, aspired to be reborn in his Pure Land, and exclusively recited Namo Amitabha Buddha, they would be delivered from reincarnation (within the Six Realms).
Each day they should be thankful for the grace of Shakyamuni Buddha and all Buddhas.

劫欲盡時五濁盛,眾生邪見甚難信;
專專指授歸西路,為他破壞還如故
曠劫以來常如此,非是今生始自悟;
正由不遇好強緣,致使輪迴難得度
今日今時聞要法,畢命為期誓堅固;
堅固持心不惜身,慚愧釋迦諸佛恩

#6 - Amitabha is actually your Buddha - nature, and the Pure Land is merely a product of your Mind. Knowing this, why would you redundantly recite Amitabha Buddha’s name? They often say, “Pure mind, pure land”; so, why is it necessary to pursue the so-called Pure Land in the West? Is this true?
Comment: (continued)
It is taught this way because the Chan School does not teach people to arouse faith, set forth aspiration, or recite the Buddha’s name. They only teach people to meditate upon “the origin of the word”, seek realization, and perceive one’s nature. That is why they say: you should not seek a pure land or try to perceive Amitabha, because this actually leads one away from one’s intrinsic Buddha - Nature.
The statement is not totally wrong; but, it inclines only toward a rational understanding. The law (theory) and phenomena are not thoroughly inter-penetrative. It is different from the Pure Land School, which is consistent with both law and phenomena. So, it cannot be said to truly be “the dual practice of Chan and Pure Land”. True Pure Land practitioners solely focus on the three teachings - faith, aspiration, and practice. We should strive to fully understand this.

其六:“自性彌陀,唯心淨土。自性本來就是佛,何必再念阿彌陀佛;心淨則土淨,還求生什麼西方淨土。” 是嗎?

何以見得?因為禪宗是不教人生信發願,也不教人念佛,只教人參究話頭,求明心見性。就說是離了自性,沒有淨土可生、彌陀可見。
話雖不錯,但終是偏於理性的見解,不能和事相融通,亦就和事理無礙的淨宗隔別,所以說不是禪淨雙修。修淨土人,專以信、願、行三法為宗,大家要明白的。

Wish to be reborn. Wish to be reborn.
When the time for the Honored One to teach the Dharma was nearly at an end, he sincerely and earnestly directed his students to disseminate Amitabha’s Name.
In this era, in which the five turbidites are increasing, there are more doubts about and slandering of the Dharma. Monastics and householders cast blame and do not listen to each other.
When they see people practicing the Dharma , their hatred is aroused and they attempt to hurt them. By accusing them of wicked deeds they sabotage Dharma practitioners through various means.
It is as if they are blind and have no virtuous roots. In this way they destroy the Sudden Teaching and it perishes forever.
Because of these actions and attitudes, they are unable to leave the Three Wretched Realms and suffer for countless eons. All people should sincerely repent for the karmic offenses of destroying the Dharma.
With great dedication the multitudes unanimously aspire to be reborn. Let’s hold fragrant flowers in our hands, and always offer them to the Buddha.

世尊說法時將了,慇懃付囑彌陀名;
五濁增時多疑謗,道俗相嫌不用聞。
見有修行起瞋毒,方便破壞競生怨;
如此生盲闡提輩,毀滅頓教永沉淪。
超過大地微塵劫,未可得離三塗身;
大眾同心皆懺悔,所有破法罪因緣。

#6 - Meditation based Buddhist schools believe that Amitabha and the Pure Land are comprised of the Buddha - Nature within our minds. Since our minds already contain our Buddha - Nature, why do we need to constantly recite Amitabha’s Name? They say, “Pure mind, pure land”. Why is it necessary to pursue the so-called Pure Land in the West? Are these beliefs true?
Comment:
This is a kind of “attachment to a law and an abandonment of phenomena” – attaching to the law produced by one’s own mind, and abandoning aspiration for rebirth through Amitabha-recitation. It entirely relies on self-power. It is easy to talk about becoming a Buddha by self-power; but, quite another to actually be able to accomplish it. Our lives pass all too quickly without achieving Buddhahood. We should recite Amitabha’s Name and fully rely upon him.
On October 17, 1936, Master Yinguang returned to Lingyan Temple from Shanghai. He specifically responded to this question in his discourse. The original text is as follows:
Chan practitioners say, “The Buddha - Nature of all individuals is pure and natural without any “dust” (phenomena) attached, that is the pure land. Buddha - Nature has no-birth and no-death, and is permanent without any change. Therefore, its life is infinite. Buddha - Nature is replete, with wisdom and light shining everywhere in the universe. This is infinite light. If a person already has this innate Buddha - Nature, and still seeks a pure land for rebirth, or perceiving Amitabha Buddha, it is redundant and meaningless.” Moreover, they see it as the “dual practice of Chan and Pure Land”, which is also incorrect. This view is entirely biased in favor of the Chan School and is not applicable to the Pure Land School.

其六:“自性彌陀,唯心淨土。自性本來就是佛,何必再念阿彌陀佛;心淨則土淨,還求生什麼西方淨土。” 是嗎?
答:
這叫“執理廢事”:執著自心之理,廢棄念佛求生之事。這就完全靠自力了。靠自力成佛談何容易,今生今世又虛過了,所以我們不能只談“口頭禪”而不念佛。
當年(民國二十五年十月十七),印光大師在由上海回至靈岩的開示中,專門針對這個問題進行了解答,原文如下。
又有人說:“我們各人的自性,本來是一塵不染,清淨湛然,就是淨土。自性本來不生不滅,亙古亙今,不遷不變,就是無量壽。自性本來具有大智慧光明,照天照地,就是無量光。如果離了這個本有的自性,另外要有個淨土可生,阿彌陀佛可見,那就是頭上安頭,無有是處。”
並且認為這就是“禪淨雙修”的道理,亦是錯的。因為這樣的話,完全是偏於禪宗,對淨宗是完全不適用的。

The Patriarchal Lineage of the Pure Land Teaching - Master Shandao
善導大師

Master Shandao left his home to become a monk before he was 20. After a few years of practice, he realized the state of Samadhi. “Samadhi”, in Pure Land Buddhism, means seeing the Buddha and the incredible sacred scenes in the Land of Bliss when the mind is in a meditative state. It is very rare to have a young man of around 20 be able to realize Samadhi. It clearly indicates that Master Shandao was already a Bodhisattva when he returned to our world.

善導大師十多歲出家,二十幾歲已證入三昧,所謂「三昧」,就是在定中見佛、定中見到極樂世界的莊嚴聖境。二十幾歲就能證入三昧,這在佛教歷史中是很少有的,年輕就已經達到那種境界,表示善導大師是一個再來人。

Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teachings about Classification of Teachings – the Two Paths (of Importance and the Great Vow)
要弘二門判

The Path of Importance refers to practicing meditative and non-meditative virtues through one’s own power, and dedicating those merits toward rebirth. This was labeled the “Difficult Path” by Nagarjuna Bodhisattva, and “Self-Power” by Master Tanluan.
The Path of the Great Vow totally relies upon the power of Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow. It contains Amitabha’s inconceivable power of deliverance, which is also known as the karmic power of the Great Vow. Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow has already been accomplished for all sentient beings in the ten directions. It embraces ALL sentient beings in the ten directions without anyone being excluded! This is why this vow is known as the Great Vow. Nagarjuna Bodhisattva called it the Easy Path and Master Tanluan labeled it “Other Power”.

「要門」是自己修行定善或散善,迴向求生;此龍樹菩薩謂之「難行道」,曇鸞大師謂之「自力」。
「弘願」是全憑彌陀本願力,彌陀本願已預先為十方眾生完成了不可思議的救度力,亦即大願業力,十方眾生萬機不漏,善惡皆攝,弘廣大願,故名弘願;此龍樹菩薩謂之「易行道」,曇鸞大師謂之「他力」。

Only by Being Reborn in the West can Loved Ones Forever be Together

In this world, all families and close friends will separate when the appropriate circumstances arise. If we wish to be together forever, we must first have a karmic connection with the Buddha, recite Amitabha’s Name, and be reborn in the Land of Bliss.

Though families and close friends in the world love each other, they can only be together for the time allotted according to their karmic circumstances. They have no choice but to leave each other when conditions change.

The only possible way they can stay together is to form a karmic bond with the Buddha. How do we make a karmic connection with the Buddha? It is by exclusively reciting Amitabha’s Name together, and aspiring to be reborn in his Pure Land. In this way, not only can they live happily together in this life; but, also permanently gather together in the next life.

圖久當生西

世間眷屬,緣盡則離;圖久聚者,當結佛緣,同念彌陀,同生極樂。

世間眷屬雖然恩愛相處,但也不過是這幾十年的和合,幾十年過了,緣盡 了,就彼此各自離開,不可能像現在這樣再相聚。

有可能再相聚的,就是要結佛緣。結什麼佛緣?就是彼此都「專稱彌陀佛名」,彼此都「願生彌陀淨土」,這樣,不只現世六親眷屬和樂相處,未來也能再度團聚,永不相離。

#5 – “To clear a karmic obstruction, you should recite the name of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha. To prevent or be safe from calamities, avoid jeopardies, and pray for babies, you should recite Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name. To awaken one’s mind with wisdom, you should recite Bodhisattva Mansjuri’s name. To heal illness and ask for longevity, you should recite the name of Bhaisajaguru Buddha. Amitabha Buddha is only responsible for our rebirth。” Are these beliefs true?
Comment: (continued)
One ought to know: By simply reciting Amitabha’s Name, you are automatically including all of the great Bodhisattvas. This includes Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta. Therefore, it is not necessary to recite the names of other Bodhisattvas.By exclusively reciting Amitabha Buddha’s Name, Avalokitesvara, Mahasthamaprapta, and 23 other bodhisattvas are naturally included. These other bodhisattvas joyfully support and protect us 24 hours a day. They are capable of keeping the Amitabha-reciter safe and at peace.
One ought to know: By simply reciting Namo Amitabha, you include all great Bodhisattvas, including Avalokitesvara and Mahasthampratpa; so, it is not necessary to change your recitation
to include the names of other Bodhisattvas. By exclusively reciting Namo Amituofo one can attain great benefits and unsurpassed merit and virtues. It transcends any mantras. Amitabha is the king of all Buddhas and the foremost in light.

其五:“消業障就念地藏王菩薩,消災免難、求子念觀音,開智慧念文殊菩薩,治病、求延壽
念藥師佛 ...... 阿彌陀佛只管往生。” 是嗎?
答:(續上)
故知:念阿彌陀佛,即是念十方諸佛;生極樂淨土,即是生十方淨土;能以此自利,即能普利一切。不必改口另外稱念十方諸佛名號。專念“南無阿彌陀佛”一佛,觀音勢至,自然相隨;並有其他大菩薩,共二十五位,不請自來,二六時中,歡喜擁護,令念佛人,離諸惱亂,常得安穩。
故知:但念彌陀,即已通念諸大菩薩,觀音勢至,自在其中,不必改口另外稱念其他菩薩。專念“南無阿彌陀佛”一佛,即是獲得大利,具足無上功德,當然超勝任何咒語;何況一句彌陀是佛中之王,光中之尊。故念佛之外,不必改口另外持念其他咒語。

#5 – “To clear a karmic obstruction, you should recite the name of Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha. To avoid calamities, escape jeopardies, or pray for babies, you should recite Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara’s name. To awaken one’s mind with wisdom, you should recite Bodhisattva Manjusri’s name. To heal an illness and ask for longevity, you should recite the name of Bhaisajyaguru Buddha. Amitabha Buddha is only concerned with rebirth 。” Is this true?
Comment:
For one who exclusively recites Amitabha’s Name, all of these other types of name-recitation are not necessary. In exclusive Amitabha recitation, we only recite his Name – Namo Amituofo. All of the other types of name-recitation are included in Amitabha’s Name. If you recite Namo Amituofo on one hand, and recite other names for different purposes, it means you do not understand the infinite power of Amitabha’s Name on one hand, and you fail to grasp the fundamental essence of the practice of the Pure Land School on the other.
By simply focusing on Amitabha-recitation all of the other practices are included. For the clearing of karmic obstructions, recitation of Namo Amituofo contains infinite light. The Buddha of infinite light can clear boundless offensive karma and darkness.
For awakening wisdom in one’s mind, because Amitabha Buddha is the Buddha of Infinite Light (wisdom), none of the other Buddhas’ lights can compare; not even the light of Bodhisattva Manjusri. As you see, Amitabha awakens wisdom in our minds each time we recite his Name. In order to increase longevity, because Amitabha is the Buddha of Infinite Life, reciting his name can naturally cure diseases and extend one’s life. In order to avoid calamities and jeopardy, Amitabha’s name contains infinite merit and virtues, which can of course,eliminate them. All of these are naturally included. Reciting Amitabha’s Name is also effective when praying for babies.
Amitabha is the king of all Buddhas - the king of the Dharma, Mantras, merits and virtues. By exclusively reciting this one Buddha’s Name – Namo Amituofo, all of the Buddhas in the ten directions will naturally protect and be conscious of you. “To protect and be conscious of ” means “to keep you at peace and secure from any obstructions or disasters”.

答:
這個對於專修念佛的人來講,都不必如此。我們專修念佛,就專念這一句南無阿彌陀佛,其他所有一切都包含在這句名號當中。如果一方面念南無阿彌陀佛,另一方面為了求這個念這個、求那個念那個,一方面說明你不懂得佛法圓融的教義,另一方面,對淨土宗來講,行持上沒有把握住它的根本。
所以,你只管念佛就好了,通通在這裏邊都有了:消業的話,念南無阿彌陀佛是無量光,無量光明的佛,就能消無邊的罪業、黑暗;如果求開智慧的話,阿彌陀佛是無量光佛,十方諸佛光明所不能及,文殊菩薩的光明也就不能比了,那麼,我們念阿彌陀佛無量光的名號,就可以開無邊的智慧;如果求延壽的話,阿彌陀佛是無量壽,那自然就可以愈病,自然可以延壽;如果要求消災免難,阿彌陀佛名號是無量功德,有功德才可以消災免難,是自自然然這些都有了;如果要求子,念阿彌陀佛也可以。
一句彌陀,是佛王、法王、咒王、功德之王。專念“南無阿彌陀佛”一佛,十方諸佛自然護念。“護念”即是守護憶念,令其安穩,無諸障難。

The Patriarchal Lineage of the Pure Land Teaching - Master Shandao

The lineage, lifeline, and scriptures established by Master Shandao were lost in the late Tang Dynasty. Ever since, all scholars and practitioners of the Pure Land teaching interpret the Pure Land teaching with reference to the dogmas of their own schools. They do not follow the Three Pure Land Sutras in order to interpret the Pure Land teaching. As a result, the Pure Land teaching is not really the Pure Land teaching, and the Sacred Path is not really the Sacred Path.

善導大師這一傳承、這個法脈、這系列著作在唐朝末年就失傳了,以致於自古以來,凡是研修淨土法門的學者或行者,都是依據他們本宗的各自教理來解釋淨土法門。也由於沒有完全依據淨土法門的經典來解釋淨土法門,導致淨土不成為淨土,聖道不成為聖道。

As the aptitude and capacity of every individual is different, so the magnitude of the Three States of Mind is also different. Moreover, “ The Three States of Mind in the context of self-power” cannot be accomplished by iniquitous sentient beings whose minds are “false, hypocritical, defiled, and wicked. That is why it is regarded as the Difficult Path.
For the Three States of Mind in the context of other-power, regardless of whether they are practitioners of meditative or non-meditative virtues, or if they are wise, ignorant, good, evil, flawed, or flawless; they all believe in and practice according to Amitabha’s teaching of deliverance through his Fundamental Vow. Thus, the Three States of Mind are united and included in the Deep Mind.

「自力三心」是行者自己發起三心之故,機有千差,故各個所發之三心程度亦有萬別,而且自力之三心不是「虛假諂偽無真實心,穢惡污染無清淨心」的罪惡生死凡夫所能發起,故是「難行道」。
「他力三心」是不論定善散善,不論智愚善惡,不論有漏無漏,皆悉信順彌陀本願之救度,故三心皆統攝於「深心」。

要弘二門判

The Three States of Mind are divided into two categories, one is the Three States Mind on the Path of Importance, and the other is the Three States of Mind on the Path of the Great Vow.
On the Path of Importance, the Three States of Mind consist of - meditative virtues and non-meditative virtues. A person dedicates the merit and virtues attained through these two kinds of practices and aspires to be reborn. These are known as the “Three States of Mind in the context of self-power.”
On the Path of the Great Vow, the Three States of Mind rely upon the power of Amitabha Buddha’s great vow and karma. These are known as “the Three States of Mind in the context of other-power.”

要門之定善三心及散善三心是「迴斯二行求願往生」的「自力三心」。
弘願三心是「乘阿彌陀佛大願業力」的「他力三心」。

All family members walk their own Individual paths
The Ksitigarbha Sutra says, “Fathers and sons have the closest relationship even if they walk on different paths. Though they may encounter each other, they are reluctant to replace each
other.
The filial piety between a father and son is instinctual. In the human world, they love each other with grace and benevolence. However, if they meet in hell after death, they will follow different paths. This is because each person has his own threefold karma. It doesn’t matter if they are couples, mothers and daughters, or fathers and sons; they all have different karma. Thus, they
receive different karmic retribution after death. Though they may meet accidentally, they are reluctant to take on each other’s suffering. Why?
The suffering in hell is truly intolerable. We cannot tolerate our own suffering, how can we possibly take on the suffering of others?

至親路各別
《地藏經》言:
父子至親,歧路各別; 縱然相逢,無肯代受。
父子的親情是天性,在人世間,自然會互相恩義,父慈子孝,可是一旦死了,到了地獄之後,就各走各的路。因為每個人今生三業行為各不一樣,即使夫妻、母女、父子,也各有不同的業,所以死的時候,就隨各自的業去受果報,不能夠相逢的;即使偶然相逢了,也「無肯代受」。為什麼?
地獄的痛苦實在難以忍受,而且,自己的痛苦都忍受不了了,怎麼有能力為人代受?想要代受也絕不可能的。

A Verse sharing Compassionate Advice and Cautions - quoted from “In Praise of Dharma Practice” by Master Shandao
善導大師《法事讚》慈悲勸誡

Those who commit the Ten Evil Deeds and the Five Gravest Transgressions always doubt and slander. They believe in demonic beings such as ghosts and gods.
They expect grace and blessings through praying to their gods and demons; but, they only experience more calamities and are jeopardized as a result.
They lie in bed for years because of sickness. Some are blind and deaf, and some are physically handicapped.
Why don’t they give up their devotion to these gods and demons and recite Amitabha’s Name? Amitabha’s vow power applies equally to all. Whoever directs his mind towards Amitabha will
receive and hold the lotus flowers in his hands.
By recitation of this single Name, they will be reborn in the land of joy and freedom, and dwell in peace without retrogression.

十惡五逆多疑謗,信邪事鬼餒神魔;
妄想求恩謂有福,災障禍橫轉彌多
連年臥病於床枕,聾盲腳折手攣橛;
承事神明得此報,如何不捨念彌陀
彌陀願力皆平等,但使迴心華自捧,
一念逍遙快樂國,畢竟常安無退動
