Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teachings about the Patriarchal Lineage of the Pure Land School – Nagarjuna Bodhisattva
《淨宗傳承之龍樹菩薩》

The text of the Chapter on the Easy Path is very short. With respect to easiness in practice, it refers to the easy practice of all Buddhas in the ten directions, the easy practices of the past eight Buddhas, the easy practices of all Buddhas in the three periods of time, the easy practices of various bodhisattvas, and, of course, the easy practice of Amitabha.
All of the easy practices mentioned above are just the side dishes for the main course, which is the easy practice of Amitabha recitation, our core teaching. It is the crystallization and final settlement of the Chapter on the Easy Path.
So, what does the Chapter on the Easy Path say? It teaches us about name-recitation in accordance with the Fundamental Vow of Amitabha. It also says: by following name-recitation in accordance with the Fundamental Vow of Amitabha, one can quickly attain rebirth in the present life, eliminate retrogression, and become a Buddha.

龍樹菩薩的《易行品》內文很短,所講的易行有十方諸佛的易行、過去八佛的易行、三世諸佛的易行以及諸菩薩的易行,同時也講到彌陀的易行。
講了這麼多的易行其實是在襯托出彌陀的易行是《易行品》的核心、《易行品》的結晶、《易行品》的歸趨。
所以《易行品》在講什麼?在講彌陀的「本願稱名」,在講只要依彌陀本願稱名就能夠現生不退而往生快速成佛。

Generally speaking, a Buddhist beginner will not easily accept the pristine Pure Land teaching, because he thinks the Buddhist teachings must be vast and profound. He feels that he must learn more extensively in order to be a true Buddhist; however, when he realizes how limited his abilities are, and he knows what his spiritual goal is, he will then focus on the exclusive practice of the Pure Land teaching.

Some Buddhists study for a long time. They read a lot, hear a lot, study a lot, go to a lot of Buddhist temples, until they eventually discover this teaching. At that time, if he is asked to let go of all of his learning, he will be reluctant to do so. He thinks, It was not easy for me to memorize the Diamond Sutra, the Surangama Mantra, the Great Compassion Mantra. I have gotten used to reciting so many times a day.
Wouldn’t it be a pity for me to let go of all of them, and just exclusively recite one single Name?
Actually, you have to let go! If you don’t lose, you never gain. If you don’t free your hands, you cannot grasp anything.

一般來說,初學佛的人,要一下子就接受這個純正的淨土法門不容易,因為他認為佛法廣大高深,總會忍不住想要廣泛涉獵,涉獵之後,才會慢慢發現自己的能力有限,以及自己所真正要的,之後才會專修專行淨土法門。
也有的人學佛很久,看得多、聽得多、學得多,道場也走得多,最後才接觸到這個法門,這時若要他將以前所學的統統放下,就會捨不得,感覺「我好不容易把《金剛經》、《楞嚴咒》、《大悲咒》背下來了,而且固定每天都念多少遍,現在要我全部都放下,只專念一句佛號,豈不是太可惜了?」
其實還是要捨,所謂捨得、捨得,不捨就不能得。

Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teachings about Faith in Pure Land Buddhism

Though the real body of Amitabha Buddha sits steadily in the Land of Bliss, he can manifest to deliver sentient beings in the worlds of the ten directions. Amitabha Buddha’s Dharma body includes the entirety of the great cosmos, so that not a single sentient being cannot jump over Amitabha’s palm. This means that Amitabha
Buddha encompasses all the worlds of the ten directions at the moment he sits steadily without moving. Thus, it is said “Magnificently, he sits alone to deliver sentient beings”.

阿彌陀佛雖然真身端坐在極樂世界不動不搖,但卻顯現到十方世界去救度眾生。阿彌陀佛的法身遍滿整個大宇宙, 我們每一位眾生, 沒有一個人是離開了阿彌陀佛如來掌中的, 亦即在不動不搖的當下, 已經跟十方世界合在一起了, 所以說「巍巍獨坐度眾生」。

There is a saying, “Wishing the next life is better than this life, rather than this life is better than the next life.” So, we should accumulate virtues, rather than wealth. If we have money, we should make offerings to the Three Jewels; so as, to benefit ourselves, deliver ancestors and protect our children and grandchildren. We cannot bring one cent with us when our life comes to the end. What we can bring is karma.
For us, we wish to be reborn in the Land of Bliss, not to reborn in the heavenly or human realm, and not to overly enjoy the blessings in the human world. In the Land of Bliss, the ground is covered with gold and the buildings are made of seven jewels. We will attain that reward when we are reborn there. So, we have to admire and pay most attention to the rewards in the Land of Bliss, rather than the rewards in this world. We should let go of all worldly rewards.

有一句話說:「寧可來生勝今生,不可今生勝來生。」所以,我們不要積財, 而要積德,有錢就應供養三寶,利自己,度先人,蔭兒孫。人生在世, 最後一分一毫都帶不走, 能夠帶得走的, 就是行業。對於我們來講,我們是要往生極樂世界,我們不求生天,也不求來生為人、享受人間的福報。
極樂世界都是黃金鋪地、七寶樓閣,我們將來往生極樂世界所獲得的是這樣的果報,所以,我們要欣慕、注重極樂世界的果報,不要注重世間的福報,把世間的所有儘量施捨出去。

All Pure Land practitioners should believe his explanation and practice in the way he instructs.

淨宗根源之第十八願(本願),彌陀示現的善導大師有很簡明扼要的解釋(稱為「本願取意文」),此解釋是對阿彌陀佛第十八願的原則、標準的解釋,凡淨土行人,應依此釋,信解之,實踐之。

It doesn’t matter whether you have taken refuge and abide by precepts. As long as you understand Amitabha’s compassion, you can talk to other people according to your circumstances, capacity, and status. You can share your Dharma joy with other people, so that Amitabha’s light of deliverance can shine on them as well.

The only things we have to take note of and understand are the other person’s roots and aptitude, so that we know how to talk in order for them to believe and accept Amitabha’s compassion. Our purpose for talking is not that we just like to talk; but, that we lead him to enter Amitabha’s sea of vows and believe and accept Amitabha’s deliverance. In such a case, expediency and skill are very important, and we have to pay close attention to our speech, so that the audience can accept Amitabha’s deliverance.

不管有沒有受戒,甚至有沒有皈依,只要懂得阿彌陀佛的慈悲,就可以隨緣、隨份、隨力去給人家講,把我們的法喜與別人一起分享,讓彌陀救度的光明也普照到他們身上。
只是要注意的是:我們也要瞭解對方的根機,知道怎麼講對方才能信受,因為我們的目的不是為了講而講,而是為了他能夠進入彌陀願海,能夠信受彌陀救度。這樣的話, 方便善巧非常重要了,怎樣才能使他接受,這個就是我們所要注意的。

Who are the sacred beings in the Land of Bliss in addition to Amitabha Buddha? They are sentient beings who have been reborn there, as well as all Amitabha-reciters in the worlds of the ten directions. Although they are still living in different worlds, their rebirth in Amitabha’s Land of Bliss is already assured when their lives end. So, these sentient beings in the worlds of the ten directions are among the adorned sacred beings.

極樂世界的聖眾,除了阿彌陀佛以外是哪些聖眾呢?就是現在已經在極樂世界,以及現在十方法界同一念佛的眾生,他們現在還在各個世界,可是命終就必定往生阿彌陀佛極樂國土,所以,這種十方法界的眾生也是極樂世界的聖眾莊嚴之一。

There is a saying, “If there is an Arhat or a practitioner in the state of deep meditation on a hill, the cows and goats that eat the grass there develop glistening coats. 
Just because of a practitioner on the hill, the grass grows fresh and green, stones there are shiny, and the animals who graze there become healthy. This illustrates that, if there is a person with merit and blessings, his family members are protected and benefitted. He can change his family members without them even noticing. So, we should simply begin our practice with no need to make demands on others. 

「入定山中之草木,牛羊食之毛光澤。」意思是說,這座山有阿羅漢居住或有 人在山中修行入定,來吃這座山的草木的牛羊,牠們的毛也會有光澤。 
光是山中有修行人入定就會使得這座山的草木青翠、石頭光亮,來吃這些草的 動物,牠們身上也會有這樣的變化,這就說明團體或家庭當中,如果有一個有福德、功德的人,家人就會受他的庇蔭,無形中也會改變家人。所以,凡事反求諸己,從自身做起。

《淨宗傳承之總顯其義》
 
When we transmit the patriarchal lineage through the explanation of the 18th Vow, we always interpret “sincerely and joyfully entrust ourselves, wish to be reborn in my land, and call my Name even ten times” as “Amitabha-recitation”. This also applies to “call as few as ten recitations”, ”wish to be reborn in my land, and “call as few as one to ten recitations”, or “as many as the rest of our lives.” Because these interpretations are very specific, they are totally reliable. If we recite based on them, we can all do it well. 
If we each followed our own understanding, realization, feelings, and judgement as our benchmark, the recitation could not be practiced correctly by children, the slow-witted, and those who are senile. As they approach death, their recitations would not lead them to rebirth. Conversely, if they are interpreted as “Amitabha-recitation” or “exclusive recitation of Amitabha’s Name”, the practice is so easy that everyone can do it. 

我們這個法門傳承的祖師解釋第十八願時,都把「至心信樂,欲生我國,乃至 十念」解釋為「稱名」,或者「下至十聲」、「願生我國,下至十聲」、「上 盡一形,下至十聲一聲。」 這就非常的具體,我們只要依據這個而不依據我們的內心,這就可靠了,如此 一來,每個人都能夠做得到。 
如果要以自己內心的領悟、體悟、感受、感覺乃至體驗作標準的話,那就不能 夠普遍,不一定每個人都做得到,如動物、小孩、愚鈍的人、老人家、臨終的 人,就不能往生了。 反之,如果解釋為「稱名」、「專稱彌陀佛名」,那就非常容易,人人都能夠 做得到。

念佛警策 

The habitual behavior of ordinary beings is heavy and complicated, and our mental compulsion to pursue the five kinds of desire is strong; but, our commitment to recite Amitabha’s Name is weak. Knowing this, we should encourage ourselves not to indulge in those habitual behaviors. We should recite Amitabha’s Name in all of our spare time, except of course, when we are sleeping and working. If you are handicapped, you can recite mentally, while also thinking of the Buddha’s grace. 

凡夫習氣繁重,念世俗五欲之心強,念彌陀佛名之心弱,故應自我惕勵,不應 自我放任。當然睡眠、作事等不能念則姑且置之,其他時間即應念佛。若喑啞 者,則可心中念佛,存想佛恩。

如果能夠往生的話,那麼第十一願也好,第二十二願也好,自自然然的就會得 到,任運自得,即使不知不求,也會自自然然的證得佛果!

At the moment of the rising sun,
The world turns from darkness to light in the ten directions.
When the moon emerges, its reflection appears in water all over the Dharma realm.
The rising sun can turn darkness to light,
And the emerging moon can cast its reflection upon the water.
We should wonder whether the sun rises,
But should not doubt whether it is dark or light.
We should know whether we can become a Buddha,
But should not worry whether we can be reborn.

日昇之剎那,十方暗皆晴;
月出之同時,法界水影現。
日昇暗轉晴,月出影宿水;
當思日出否,莫疑暗晴否;
當知成佛否,莫疑得生否。

Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teachings about the Patriarchal Lineage of the Pure Land School
《淨宗傳承之總顯其義》

Within the eight great schools in Buddhism, the one we select is the Pure Land teaching. If we go deeply into the doctrinal teaching of Pure Land, we note that the teachings of the Shandao lineage are different from those propagated after the Northern Song dynasty. We also see that our teaching is the truly pristine Pure Land teaching. The teachings of the Shandao lineage comply with the three Pure Land sutras and match those doctrines to the aptitudes of sentient beings. So, when we select a Pure Land teaching, we should choose the most pristine, that of the Shandao lineage.

佛法八大宗派當中,我們選擇的就是淨土法門。大家如果有深入淨土的教理,將善導大師這一個法脈的教理,跟歷代弘傳的,也就是北宋之後所弘傳的淨土教理互相比較,就曉得我們這個法門才是純正的淨土法門,才知道善導大師的思想才是合乎淨土三經,才是契理又契機的。所以,我們選擇淨土法門就要專依善導流這一脈的思想。

護生與素食

Reciting Amitabha’s Name and protecting life are one entity. Why do we recite Amitabha’s Name? It is because we accept Amitabha’s deliverance. Amitabha Buddha delivers us from endless reincarnation and accomplishes our ultimate wisdom through joining our Buddha-nature with his Dharma body.

So, on one hand, we recite Amitabha’s Name to be delivered by him; and, on the other, we should protect the lives of others and even dedicate the merit of our Amitabha-recitation to all sentient beings. Thus we say, “May the merit of this practice be distributed to all beings without discrimination, that they may be reborn in the Land of Peace and Joy.”

念佛和護生是一體的。我們為什麼要念佛呢?因為要接受彌陀的救度,救度我們生死輪迴的生命,成就佛性的法身慧命;同樣地,我們對一切有情眾生也要護念牠們的生命。所以,我們一方面念佛,蒙受佛的救度,一方面要護生,甚至念佛迴向給一切眾生,所謂「平等施一切,往生安樂國」。

All worldly phenomena of various kinds are unreal, only Buddha is real. Because All worldly phenomena are unreal, we shouldn’t attach to them. Moreover, as ordinary beings, our minds are unreal, confused, and full of afflictions; so, nothing we perceive is real and secure.

Thus, if we don’t recite Amitabha’s Name, our minds will be unreal, false, confused, and afflicted. To avoid false and assorted thoughts, afflictions due to ignorance, and being confused by evil ghosts, why don’t we fix our minds on Amitabha recitation and safely dwell in the company of the Buddha?

「世間虛假,唯佛是真。」世間一切,森羅萬象,都是虛假,不足繫念。而且凡夫之心,也都是虛妄、雜念、煩惱,無一真實,不可安住。
是故,若不念佛,必念虛假、妄想、雜念、煩惱。與其生妄想雜念,起無明煩惱,遭惡鬼吐痰;何不繫心,安住彌陀,與佛同在?

As a person approaches death, it is a critical time in terms of ascending or descending. It is of the utmost urgency and importance. If he recites Amitabha’s Name, he will be reborn in Amitabha’s Pure Land and experience no more reincarnations. Thus, there will be one sentient being less in this Dharma realm, and one more Budhha to deliver sentient beings throughout the great cosmos.
If it is because of your advice that he can be reborn to become a Buddha, can you imagine how great the merit and virtues you attain are? They are even greater than that gained through making offerings of seven jewels to the Buddhas filling the three thousand great worlds. Thus, the merit and virtues you accumulate by reciting Amitabha’s Name, and advising others to recite Amitabha’s Name, are the greatest of all.

一個臨命終的人,這個時候是他升沉的關鍵時刻,可說是千鈞一髮,非常的重要,我們勸他念佛,他念佛了,往生了,不再輪迴了,這樣法界就少了一個輪迴的眾生,大宇宙當中,就多了一個救度眾生的佛。

他能夠往生成佛,是因為你的勸化,這樣的功德,怎麼能夠想像得來呢?即使以遍滿三千大千世界的七寶來供養佛,都不如這樣的功德。所以自己念佛,又勸他人念佛,這是所有功德當中最大的。

The Land of Saha is not a place one would want to be reborn, because it is extremely painful.
Because the Land of Bliss is unconditioned, it is truly splendid.
People with the appropriate aptitudes to advance through the nine levels can attain non-retrogression, if they dedicate their accumulated merit.
They become Avinivartaniya bodhisattvas who are no longer reborn.

娑婆極苦非生處,極樂無為實是精;
九品俱迴得不退,阿鞞跋致即無生。

They also enable us to affirm the easiness and splendor of the teachings, and introduce us to the pristine Pure Land teachings of the Shandao lineage.

凡是有志於學淨土法門,而且對淨土法門有使命感的人,最好把淨土宗祖師解釋本願的相關法語背下來,這樣,法語的內涵就會在我們的心中生根發芽,就會增長我們的信心、智慧、法喜,會讓我們更肯定這個法門的容易與殊勝,更肯定所謂純粹的淨土法門就唯有善導大師這一個流派。

Under what circumstances do we question Amitabha Buddha? We think we must rely on accumulating merit and virtues through our own efforts. If we have these kinds of beliefs, we are regarded as questioning Amitabha Buddha.

怎樣的情形是跟阿彌陀佛對抗呢?就是不想往生極樂世界,這樣就是跟阿彌陀佛對抗;或者認為雖然念佛,可是還不足以往生極樂世界,還必須靠一些自力功夫,或其他的功德,如果是抱著這一種觀念,就是跟阿彌陀佛對抗,跟阿彌陀佛的願力不相應,不相應就是有衝突。

All of the merit and virtues necessary for sentient beings of the ten directions to attain rebirth in the Land of Bliss are contained in the Great Name of Myriad Virtues – Namo Amituofo. That is to say, the power to deliver sentient beings has already been thoroughly accomplished by Amitabha Buddha and instilled in his Great Name.
Simply speaking, Pure Land teaching is to have faith in and accept Amitabha’s deliverance through his vow power. As long as we accept Amitabha Buddha, it is easy for him to deliver us.

十方眾生往生極樂世界的功德資糧,都在這句「南無阿彌陀佛」萬德洪名裏面。也就是說,救度眾生的力量,阿彌陀佛已為我們徹底完成,早已完全成就、含攝在這句萬德洪名之中,沒有半點欠缺。簡言之,淨土法門,就是隨順阿彌陀佛的救度,也就是隨順阿彌陀佛的願力。只要我們不跟阿彌陀佛對抗,阿彌陀佛救度我們就很容易。

Rebirth is a word that contains a sacred meaning and splendid connotation. It also bears the meaning of glorification, praise, and rareness, because rebirth is not death.
Rebirth means departing from birth-and-death within the Three Domains and Six Realms, and arrival in the Land of Bliss, in which we attain Perfect enlightenment. Thus we see that rebirth is not death, but transcends death, and acquires an eternal real life.

「往生」這二字是具有很神聖、很殊勝的內涵,帶有讚歎、讚美、可貴難得的
意味,因為往生並不是死亡,往生是脫離三界六道的生死輪迴,而且到極樂世
界成佛。所以往生不但不是死亡,而且是超越死亡,獲得永遠的生命、真正的生命。
