However, when referring to this 4-sentence verse alone, we cannot understand how we can attain the status of non-retrogression while still living in the Land of Saha in our physical body. However, later on, there is a text that explains more clearly:
If a bodhisattva wishes to reach a state of Aviniartaniya (non- retrogression) while in this body, and accomplish the highest perfect Enlightenment, he should recite the Name of all Buddhas of the ten directions.
There is another verse saying, “If a person can remember this Buddha, he will attain immeasurable merit, power and virtues, and instantly enter the state of assurance (non-retrogression). That is why I always recite.” It also directly points out that Name-recitation in accordance with the Fundamental Vow is “entering the state of non-retrogression (assurance)”. Thus, there is no need to wait for rebirth.

不過單從這四句偈,當然看不出肉體還在娑婆世界就已經獲得不退轉地身份的意涵,下面還有一段文:「若菩薩欲於此身得至阿惟越致地,成就阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,應當念是,十方諸佛,稱其名號」,這又講得更明確了。
而另一首偈:「人能念是佛,無量力功德,即時入必定,是故我常念」,也直接點出本願稱名是「即時入必定」,不必等到往生之後。

《淨宗傳承之龍樹菩薩》

“If a person wishes to reach the state of non-retrogression quickly, he should reverently hold fast to recitation of the Name.” This is a verse written by Nagarjuna Bodhisattva in the Chapter on the Easy Path. The ultimate purpose of this verse is to reveal the importance of Amitabha-recitation as stated in Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow.
The main point of this verse is to teach us that “name-recitation” is the main cause of rebirth and the karma of assurance. At the same time it also indicates that, as soon as a person begins Name-recitation, he has already attained the status of non-retrogression in the present life. (As stated in Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow)

「若人欲疾至,不退轉地者,應以恭敬心,執持稱名號。」這是龍樹菩薩《易行品》核心的一首偈,此偈最終目的在於彰顯彌陀本願的念佛。
這首偈的重點,一方面是展現「稱名」,並且說明「稱名」是往生的正因、正定業;同時也顯示,只要能「本願稱名」,現生就已經獲得不退轉地的身份了。

Right now, Amitabha Buddha is already intimate with and close to us. We are together and inseparable. Amitabha Buddha thinks of us, and we think of Amitabha Buddha. We think of Amitabha Buddha, and Amitabha Buddha thinks of us.
However, this concept can only be correctly understood when we focus on and deeply believe in the doctrines of the Pure Land teaching according to the Shandao lineage. Otherwise, we will always have doubts and uncertainty within our minds.

阿彌陀佛現在就已經跟我們親、跟我們近、跟我們結合、跟我們不相離。阿彌陀佛念我們,我們念阿彌陀佛;我們念阿彌陀佛,阿彌陀佛念我們。
不過這些道理,都是要專一深入善導大師這一法脈的教理,才能夠正確瞭解,而無所懷疑,否則心中多少都會有些疑問。

An Amitabha-reciter and Amitabha Buddha are united in one body, and are inseparable forever. This does not mean that if we recite Amitabha’s Name now; but, since Amitabha Buddha is located in the Western Land of Bliss, we have to wait until we approach death with right mindfulness, and then Amitabha Buddha will come to receive us. We are already intimate with Amitabha Buddha!

念佛的人跟阿彌陀佛一體不離,永遠都不會跟阿彌陀佛分離,不是說現在我們念佛,但是阿彌陀佛遠在西方極樂世界,必須要等到我們臨終,而且正念現前的時候,阿彌陀佛才會來迎接我們,那個時候阿彌陀佛才會跟我們親、跟我們近、跟我們結合,並不是這樣。

With respect to worldly teachings, filial love is the foremost among all virtues. With respect to the Buddhist teachings, there are the Three Meritorious Deeds. The first deed is offering filial love for one’s parents. The Three Meritorious Deeds are also the “main cause of the pure karma of all Buddhas in the three periods of time”.
With respect to the self-powered Sacred Path, one should practice the Three Meritorious Deeds if he wishes to become a Buddha. The first blessed virtue is filial love for one’s parents. If one cannot practice this one, he would be unable to practice the other two. Failing to do so, one cannot become a Buddha, maybe not even a human being. We can see that filial love is very important. Moreover, the suffering due to lack of filial love is terribly horrifying!

就世間法來說,「百善孝為先」,以佛法來講,就有「三福」,三福中第一福,就是孝順父母。這三福就是「三世諸佛,淨業正因」。
以自力聖道門來講,要成佛就要修這三種福德,第一種福德孝順父母,如果做不到,其他都免談,不但不能成佛,甚至不能生而為人。由此可見孝順是多麼的重要,不孝的果報之苦,是何等令人怵目驚心。

二種法門,不可並論,而具足惑業之凡夫,可不慎所擇哉!.... 各別論之則有益,混融論之則有損。

Amitabha’s Name and Amitabha’s Buddha-body are one-in-two, and two-in-one, because the Name is the same as the Buddha-body. The Dharma-body is intangible, has no form, makes no sound, cannot be described through any words, and does not correspond to any form in our minds. A Name is given and a form manifests in order to deliver sentient beings. “Namo Amituofo” is the great Name of myriad virtues. Thus, Amitabha’s Name is the manifested body of Amitabha, our fundamental teacher, and the fundamental Buddha for Amitabha-reciters. If we abandon Amitabha’s Name, where can we find Amitabha, and where can we see our ultimate teacher?

彌陀名號與彌陀佛體,一而二,二而一,名體一如故。法身無形無聲,離言說相,離心緣相;為度眾生,垂名現形,即是南無阿彌陀佛之萬德洪名。
故彌陀名號,是彌陀化身也,亦是念佛人之本師本佛本尊也;離彌陀名號,何處覓彌陀,何處見本師乎!

Filial love is the foremost among all moral conducts. When we practice virtues, we must love and obey our parents first. Why? It is because all devas, spirits and ghosts respect the dutiful person most.
Ghosts will not hurt a dutiful person. When they see him, they will kneel down. Devas must protect a dutiful person. So, if we love and obey our parents, we won’t need to ask devas, spirits and ghosts to protect us, they will naturally do it. It is because, for each cause, there comes a respective effect.

「百善孝為先」,我們行善,要先孝順父母。為什麼?因為天地鬼神最敬重孝子,以鬼來講,鬼不敢害孝子,鬼看到孝子來,就會趕快跪下來;至於神,一定保護孝子。所以只要孝順父母,我們不必祈求天地鬼神,自自然然得到天地鬼神的保佑,因為如是因如是果。

Among most Dharma teachings, practitioners exclusively rely on “self-power” (their own power); but, in the Pure Land teaching, practitioners exclusively rely on the Buddha’s power.
Among most Dharma teachings, it is required to clear all delusive karma before a practitioner can end the sufferings of birth and death. For practitioners of the Pure Land teaching, practitioners, though born with karma, instantly receive a prediction that they will enter the sacred path through rebirth [in the Pure Land].

一切法門,專仗自力;淨土法門,專仗佛力。
一切法門,惑業淨盡,方了生死。淨土法門, 帶業往生, 即預聖流。

It is a person who can preach the Way, not the Way that can preach the person. So, we should disperse the seeds of faith everywhere, then the flowers and fruits of Amitabha-recitation will be harvested. So long as we hold our minds of aspiration for rebirth with our best effort, Amitabha will arrange all the rest for us. I don’t fix my mind on the result, whether it is gain or loss, success or failure.

人能弘道,非道弘人。努力將信心的種子遍撒, 自然有念佛的花果收成。但持願心,盡其在我,則彌陀自有安排;得失成敗不繫胸中。

Holding fast means holding tightly and steadily. His faith does not waver or change. It also means sustaining. It is just like holding an object in your hand, in a way that the object will not escape or disappear.
Thus, “he should hold fast to reciting the Name with a reverent mind.” This means we should humbly and respectfully believe and accept, receive the Name in our hearts, while orally reciting the Name.

「執持」的「執」就是堅牢,很穩固,他的信心不會移動、不會改變了;「持」就是不散不失,好像我們把物品掌握在手中,它就不會跑到別的地方或消失了。
所以,「應以恭敬心,執持稱名號」的意思就是說,我們應謙卑恭敬的信受、領納這句名號在心中,同時稱念這句名號在口中。

《淨宗傳承之龍樹菩薩》

“If a person wishes to quickly reach the state of non-retrogression, he should hold fast to reciting the Name with a reverent mind.” 
This is a verse written by Nagarjuna Bodhisattva. Among sentient beings of the ten directions, if a person wishes to reach the state of non-retrogression as soon as possible, he does not need to rely on other complicated teachings; but, simply hold on tightly to the practice of Name recitation with the mind of reverence. In so doing, he can immediately reach the state of non-retrogression.
Reverence means humility. So, one should not be arrogant, but be humble. Reverence also means respect; so, one should respect, believe, and follow Amitabha Buddha. This is known as the reverent mind.

龍樹菩薩說,十方眾生如果有人想要很快速的到達不退轉地,那麼不用假借其他複雜的法門,只要以恭敬心來執持稱名號,當下就可以很快達到不退轉地了。
「恭敬」的「恭」就是自己很謙卑、很低下、不高慢;「敬」就是對阿彌陀佛很崇敬、很信賴,獨尊阿彌陀佛,這就是恭敬心。

In reference to Amitabha’s Name, the Name is the Dharma body. Thus, the Name and the body are inseparable, identical and equal. Moreover, the three bodies are actually one, and the direct circumstantial rewards are the same. Therefore, by reciting the Name, the merit and virtues you attain are as great as boundless space.
They contain the fullness and purity of True-Suchness and the One-Nature that are inseparable from the Name.

彌陀名號,名即法體,名體不離,名體相即,且三身即一身,依正一如,故但念佛名,功德如虛空,廣大無邊際,真如一性之圓明,不離名號故。

I hope all beings who hear [the Dharma] can believe, and all beings who read [the Dharma] can aspire to be reborn in the West.
The Commentary [on the Contemplation Sutra] is already certified by the Buddhas to be ultimate and definitive; thus, one should not add to it or delete from it by one sentence, or even one word. Those who make copies of it should accept it as a sutra. One ought to be aware.

願使:含靈聞之生信,有識睹者西歸。
此義已請證定竟,一句一字,不可加減,欲寫者一如經法。應知。

How can we children best share our filial love with our parents? Apart from supporting, respecting, and obeying them, we should guide our parents and family members in learning Buddhist teachings. We should let them know it is only due to causal conditions that we can be together in this world and in this lifetime. Each individual will reincarnate according to his own good and evil karma. Understanding this, we realize that nothing is eternal. We can take no material possessions with us after we die. We will continue to reincarnate for a very long time if we do not achieve emancipation. Through sharing these truths with them, the worldview of our family members will change.

如何讓做子女的我們達到圓滿的孝道呢?就是除了在父母還沒有往生的時候, 盡到孝養、孝敬、孝順外, 進一步以各種方法來引導父母、親人學佛。讓親人曉得這世間的一切不過是一時因緣和合而已,每個人都隨各人的善業、惡業而流轉、投胎轉世,所以它不是永恆不變的。死後也並不是一無所有, 沒有解脫還要繼續輪迴, 它的時間很漫長。要讓親人了解這個道理,那麼親人的世界觀就不一樣了。

If we wish to cut off all delusions and realize the great Buddhist truths through the self-powered practices of precepts, meditation, and wisdom, this is called the General or Common Path.
If we wish to be reborn in the West with recourse to Amitabha Buddha’s compassionate power, through holding the Buddha’s Name with sincere faith and earnest aspiration, this is known as the Particular or Special Path.

若仗自力修戒定慧,以迄斷惑證真,了生脫死者,名為『通途法門』。
若具真信切願,持佛名號,以期仗佛慈力,往生西方者,名為『特別法門』。

The great sufferings of sentient beings are the sufferings of Amitabha Buddha.

Unfortunately, these children cannot see this father because they are blind and deaf.
Despite these handicaps, Amitabha Buddha is always right in front of them.

眾生受大苦,悉是佛之苦,恒時欲利益,猶如一子故。
盲聾不見父,父母常見子;眾生雖不見,實在彌陀前。

《淨宗傳承之龍樹菩薩》

Nagarjuna Bodhisattva says, “Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow is as follows: If anyone thinks of me, recites my name, and takes refuge in me, he will instantly enter the state of assurance [non-retrogression].” This is the definition of the 18th Vow in the Infinite Life Sutra, as stated by Nagarjuna Bodhisattva.
“If anyone thinks of me” means - if a sentient being believes and accepts Amitabha’s deliverance, and aspires to be reborn in Amitabha’s Pure Land. “Recites my name, and takes refuge in me” means - exclusively recite Amitabha’s Name and take refuge in Amitabha Buddha. Thus, we are taking refuge through reciting “Namo Amituofo”. Namo means to take refuge, so Name-recitation is taking refuge. Thus, any person who thinks of “me”(Amituofo) and recites his Name, is taking refuge in and relying on Amitabha’s deliverance through his Fundamental Vow.
Further, Nagarjuna Bodhisattva says, “He will instantly enter the state of assurance [non-retrogression]”. This person instantly reaches the Bodhisattva status in the state of non-retrogression.

龍樹菩薩說:「阿彌陀佛,本願如是:若人念我,稱名自歸,即入必定。」這是龍樹菩薩對《無量壽經》第十八願的定義。
「若人念我」就是如果有眾生信受彌陀救度,願生彌陀淨土,就是「念我」。「稱名自歸」,而專稱彌陀佛名,歸命於阿彌陀佛,因為自歸稱名,就是「南無阿彌陀佛」,「南無」就是歸命,所以稱名就是自歸;如此「念我稱名」的自己歸投依靠於彌陀本願的救度,則龍樹菩薩說「即入必定」,這種人當下就進入不退轉的菩薩階位了。

Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teachings - Encouraging the Practice of Amitabha-Recitation
念佛警策

Pure Land practitioners should not seek for mysteries or psychic powers; but, should recite Amitabha’s Name in an ordinary, normal, scrupulous, and simple manner, with singleness of mind, settled mind, restful mind, and without any doubts. Seeing oneself as a slow-witted being, one should feel free and relaxed, without any worry or attachment during Amitabha-recitation. One should recite Amitabha’s Name while walking, standing, sitting and lying down. Without forsaking, recite Amitabha’s Name when you are happy or when you are afflicted. Above all, always exclusively recite Amitabha’s Name.

淨宗行人,不可尋奇覓巧,喜好別異。應該平凡、平常、平實、平淡,一心念佛、安心念佛、息心念佛、老實念佛、守愚念佛,輕鬆自在念佛、心無掛礙念佛、行住坐臥念佛、時處諸緣念佛、念念不捨念佛,歡喜則歡喜念佛,煩惱則煩惱念佛,總之,唯「一向專稱彌陀佛名」。

Amitabha Buddha, who has attained perfect Enlightenment, and sentient beings who have taken refuge in Amitabha’s deliverance, are actually one entity. “Sentient beings within the Buddha’s Mind” means, sentient beings who recite Amitabha’s Name are always within Amitabha Buddha’s mind. “Buddha within the mind of sentient beings” means, Amitabha Buddha is always within sentient beings’ minds. So, it says: when the Buddha thinks of sentient beings, sentient beings are within the mind of the Buddha. When sentient beings think of the Buddha, the Buddha is within the minds of sentient beings.

已經完成正覺的阿彌陀佛跟已經歸命彌陀救度的眾生,這一種眾生跟阿彌陀佛是一體的,「佛心有生」指阿彌陀佛的心中有念佛的眾生,「生心有佛」指念佛的眾生心中有阿彌陀佛,所謂「佛念眾生,眾生在佛心內;眾生念佛,佛在
眾生心中。」

It is the heartfelt wish of all parents to earn enough money to properly raise their children and be able to leave them some assets, hoping their lives can be comfortable and without any worries. However, this objective is totally wrong.
If their children have virtuous blessings, they will have no worries about their futures. If they don’t, they will be hurt when they receive their parents’ estate.
Leaving virtuous blessings to your children is important. However, parents should make charitable donations if they have one million, 2 million, or several million. This is the correct way to leave virtuous blessings to one’s children.
For a family that is rich for three generations, it is most practical to pass intangible assets, rather than tangible assets to their children. As it pertains to virtuous blessings, virtue is the cause and blessings are the effect. Those who have virtues must be rewarded with blessings. Virtues are realized by how kind and considerate you are to others, being self-sacrificing, helping others to succeed, and not harming others. These are truly solid and substantial virtues.

賺錢來養兒女,讓兒女有一些恆產,將來生活比較無憂無慮,這是天下父母心,但方向完全錯誤。孩子有福德,日後衣食無憂,孩子沒有福德,留再多的錢給他都害了他,所以留福德給子孫是最重要的。即使現在有一百萬、兩百萬、幾百萬,更重要的是拿去佈施,這樣就是留德給他了。
能富過三代的家族,往往不是留有形的恆產給兒孫,而是留無形的功德,這才是最實際的。所謂「道德」、「福德」,福德是果,道德就是因,有了「道」往往就有「福」這個果,而道德的實際展現就是對人恩慈體貼,犧牲自己,成全別人,不為非作歹......等等,這個才是最實在的。

Among the 48 vows which one says, “Thinks of me, recites my name, and takes refuge in me”? It is the 18th Vow. Thus, we know the 18th Vow is the Fundamental Vow, and the content of the 18th Vow is “to recite my Name and take refuge in me”.
The result is “to enter the state of assurance [non-retrogression]”. In order to reach the stage of non-retrogression, we should reverently hold fast to the recitation of Amitabha’s Name.
“Recites my name, and takes refuge in me, he will instantly enter the state of assurance [non-retrogression]” refers to the “even ten times” mentioned in the 18th Vow. At the same time, since the 18th Vow has been accomplished, the person can attain the merit and virtues necessary to” instantly enter” the state of assurance [non-retrogression].

「念我、稱名、自歸、即入必定」這種內涵,是在四十八願當中的哪一願呢?
是第十八願。這就可以讓我們知道第十八願就是本願,而本願的內容是「稱名自歸」,而其結果是「即入必定」。「必定」就是不退轉,而要疾至不退轉,是只要以恭敬心,執持稱名號。
所以這裡所講的「稱名自歸,即入必定」,就顯出第十八願所講的「乃至十念」的稱名念佛;同時由於第十八願已經成就了,所以就能夠獲得「即入必定」的功德。
