The Patriarchal Lineage of the Pure Land Teaching - Master Shandao

Master Shandao did not interpret “sincerely and joyfully entrust” in the 18th Vow in a complicated and sophisticated manner. He interpreted it as “recite my Name” in a straightforward way, and affirmed that sentient beings who recite are assured of rebirth”. It is the karma of assurance that accords with the 18th Vow.
The enlightening explanation of Master Shandao is a true expression of his wisdom and compassion. It is clear cut, concise and precise. There is no room for further discussion or argument. With respect to Shakyamuni’s teachings in his era, he drew an earth-shattering conclusion:
Though the preceding passages spoke of the merits of the meditative and non-meditative virtues (Shakyamuni’s teachings in his era) , the Buddha’s underlying wish is that sentient beings recite Amitabha’s Name single-mindedly “even ten times”.
Thus, the exclusive recitation of Amitabha’s Name is the foundation of the entire Pure Land Teaching. Through exclusive recitation of Amitabha’s Name, we believe and accept Amitabha’s deliverance, and aspire to be reborn in his Pure Land. It also establishes faith, aspiration and practice as the fundamental principles of the Pure Land Teaching , and also the reason why it is considered an “Easy Path”.

Voice of Master Jingzong - Q and A about the Purpose of Life

(continuation of Q6 - 2/3)
First you must, to a certain extent, try to find satisfaction and gratefulness in your
daily life.
Second, you must try to deal with all matters and relationships in each day with Love.
The most important thing in life is love. If you wish to have a rebirth or a “new” life, you must awaken your ability to love. If you cannot, it is impossible for you to attain a rebirth within this life.
It is like having a body that is injured. It must be healed by the life force in order to have a speedy recovery. The stronger the life force, the faster the recovery. The more the love in your heart is activated, the stronger your life force will become, and you will have a far better quality of life.
If your understanding of a “new life” is defined as: being wealthy, your work going smoothly, being respected by others, having a good family, being a good child, etc., I am afraid you will never attain a “new life”.
It is because your understanding of the meaning of life is more or less the same as before, with no difference in terms of nature or quality, but just in quantity, and feeling better or worse.
With respect to a rebirth or a revitalized life, one must get the answer from the root source of life.
(to be continued tomorrow)

Voice of Master Jingzong - Q and A about the Purpose of Life

Q6: I am nearly 30 years old and very unhappy because of all the difficulties in my life. I want to ask: how can I attain rebirth and have a “new” life?
Answer to Q6:
You are just 30 and unhappy with your life. I think it’s too early to say whether your life will remain the same or become easier in the future.
Perhaps you are not patient enough? Many people haven’t accomplished their goals by the age of 30. However, the Buddha taught that all phenomena are impermanent.
Some people say, “If you are not satisfied with your life, it may motivate you to make a change. However, having said that, I think it may not completely make you happy.
Actually, if you have a healthy body and a loving family, you have much to be grateful for. If you don’t take the time to appreciate what you have, you will never be completely satisfied, have many complaints, place blame, remain confused, and ruin your life.
In any case, you have to seek changes and improvements based on your current situation and status in life. So, it is appropriate to say that you are not fully unsatisfied, but also not fully satisfied.
You should pursue a better ending for your life, based on the foundation of basic satisfaction and gratefulness. That is one way you can have a kind of rebirth.
(to be continued tomorrow)

Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teaching about Classification of Teachings – the Two Practices (Primary and Miscellaneous)

Various kinds of virtuous practices, such as filial piety to parents, are our innate responsibilities. Similarly, supporting our teachers, abiding by our Buddhist vows, and fulfilling our worldly obligations are also our responsibilities. Is practicing these virtuous types of conduct regarded as “self-power” or “other-power”, “Primary Practices” or “Miscellaneous Practices”?
Actually, these forms of virtuous conduct are not related to “self-power” or “other-power”, “Primary Practices” or “Miscellaneous Practices”. However, if a person dedicates the merit of these types of conduct for rebirth, they are considered to be “self-power” and “Miscellaneous Practices”.
This indicates that we are unsure about whether it is enough to exclusively recite Amitabha’s Name to be reborn in the Land of Bliss. This makes us believe it is necessary to to rely on other forms of virtuous conduct. In such a case, they would be considered “self-power” and “Miscellaneous Practices”.
If we don’t dedicate these forms of merit for rebirth, they would be categorized as neither primary practices nor miscellaneous practices, self-power or other-power, because they are not related to rebirth. We conduct ourselves this way in the world to be moral and responsible human beings.

Common Knowledge in Pure Land Teaching

103 Exclusive Recitation of Amitabha’s Name is the Samadhi of Amitabha-Recitation

In the Amitabha Sutra, “single-minded without confusion” refers to “reciting Amitabha’s Name with twofold exclusivity”. It doesn’t matter whether a person is single-minded in a meditative state or a non-meditative state. The exclusive recitation of Amitabha’s Name, with a meditative mind or with a non-meditative mind, is the karma for assured rebirth.

However, when compared with single-minded meditative recitation, it can be considered recitation with a non-meditative mind. In other words, even though we have false thoughts during Amitabha-recitation, we should just continue reciting Amitabha’s Name. This is known as recitation with a non-meditative mind. This kind of Amitabha-recitation, whether in a meditative or non-meditative state, can be called the “Samadhi of Amitabha-Recitation”. It is the karma through which rebirth is assured.

A Verse sharing Compassionate Advice and Cautions quoted from ‘In Praise of Pratyutpanna’ by Master Shandao

I generally urge all good advisors who aspire to be reborn,
To not separate from those close and intimate companions who aspire to be reborn with the same practice.
We have had hundreds and thousands of parents and children in many past lives,
But none of them was the augmentative causes of our awakening.
They become attached to each other, and together fall into the wretched realms.
Because they receive different bodies as karmic retribution, they will not even recognize each other.
They may be born as one of the six domestic animals, such as pigs and goats,
They may have feathers or horns and never know when their lives may end.
We should treasure having a human body and being able to hear this most important teaching.
We should be determined, to gladly leave the village in which we now live, and return to our home country.
It is very exciting when a father and son meet and recognize each other.
It is similar for Bodhisattvas and Sravakas.

Voice of Master Jingzong - Q and A about the Purpose of Life

(continuation of Q5 - 6/6)
For example, if we are color blind, the world will seem gray and lacking contrast. However, if we see the world with normal eyesight, the world will look colorful and contrasting. Which one will make you happier? It’s the latter, of course. Another example would be, as a person ages his eyesight declines. Another has very good eyesight and powers of observation. Which one would you prefer? It's the latter again!
The perceptions of bodhisattvas and sages who leave reincarnation within the Six Realms are of totally different grades with respect to their sensory organs (eyes, ears, noses, tongues, bodies and brains). They transcend all of the infinite grades in our world.
So, if you maintain your logical thinking at this level, and say, “my perceptions of life are meaningful, aren’t they?” Your sense of beauty and reality greatly exceed what you can actually perceive.

Voice of Master Jingzong - Q and A about the Purpose of Life

(continuation of Q5 - 5/6)
If you say, “ it’s good or meaningful” based on your senses or your feelings, it is not totally accurate because it is only based on a superficial recognition.
Our rebirth in the Land of Bliss to become a Buddha is not a kind of compressing or diminishing our functional capacities or our awakenings, nor is it nonsense or happiness as we normally experience them. It is a complete and perfect awakening of our functional capacities, without any obstructions. In this respect, all Dharmas already transcend the relativity of subject and object - the state of duality.
The Buddha-Mind is as vast as the ocean, like the moon shining, and all of the stars in the sky. All Dharmas, all the creations and extinctions of thoughts by sentient beings are unfolded and revealed in these Buddha-Minds.
They perceive: richness, deepness, vastness, the state of perfection, completion, and relaxation without obstructions. In our world of duality, we distinguish object and subject, even “enlightened” is compared with “unenlightened”. This is basically discriminative and inverted. This shortcoming does not exist in the Land of Bliss. It is beyond our conceptual thinking, so I will stop talking here.
(to be continued tomorrow)

Voice of Master Jingzong - Q and A about the Purpose of Life

(continuation of Q5 - 4/6)
*Permanence is eternity.
*Bliss is a great joy, a Dharma delight, and the joy of our Dharma Natures.
This kind of bliss originates from love, delight and compassion, which are an innate and natural part of our Buddha Natures. They are not like the worldly desires for eating, drinking, sensual desires, enjoyment of art, meditation, etc. It is inconceivable, beyond our thinking and dreaming.
The ignorant statement you made about “no-sadness and no-happiness”, should be corrected through studying the Buddha Dharma.
With respect to your statement that “Life is meaningful only if there is sadness and happiness, birth and death, aging and illness”, it is actually not like that! It is a different kind of sensory awareness. Our abilities to experience sadness, happiness, birth, aging, illness and death arise from the functional capacities of our Buddha Nature.
Our Buddha Nature fuels our awakening or enlightenment. A Buddha is an awakened or enlightened being. Feeling sad or happy are superficial emotions. Due to our faulty abilities to discriminate, we attach greater meaning to them than they deserve. In this respect, if you can realize their source through awakening, you will find a much deeper meaning in them. Isn’t that far more valuable?
(to be continued tomorrow)

Voice of Master Jingzong - Q and A about the Purpose of Life

(continuation of Q5 - 3/6)
Regarding the meaning of “no-sadness” and “no-happiness”, they are simply two kinds of false thoughts and judgements, such as“meaningless”, “no big deal”, etc.
We question their value because we can’t fully understand the physical and mental emancipation of eradicating all kinds of afflictions in the stage of Nirvana (stillness, tranquility, no birth, and no death) These states transcend any of our concepts of the universe, and are the source or origin of all existence. They express a kind of great emancipation - realization of the ultimate truth.
It is similar to riding on a bus, in that we might be interrupted by traffic accidents, traffic jams or traffic fatigue. However, when we become a Buddha or Bodhisattva, our Dharma bodies are omnipresent. We can immediately reach anywhere at any time, without any obstruction.
All of these states are beyond our ability to grasp. “How is that possible? Ignorant ordinary beings like us may think, “ I don’t want that kind of fairy tale life!” However, they are actually an expression of the innate functional capacity of our Buddha-Natures.
So, Nirvana or becoming a Buddha is described as a state of “permanence, bliss, no-self, and purity”.
(to be continued tomorrow)

(continuation of Q5 - 2/6)
2. One day, Ananda asked the Buddha about the suffering in hell. The Buddha said, “ If I tell someone about that, he will be frightened to death and will not be able to continue listening.”
Holding a pebble, the Buddha further said, “A betrayer was punished by his king by being stabbed by spears one hundred times in the morning. What do you think?” Ananda said, “It sounds terribly painful.”
At noon, the king wondered why he was still alive and ordered him to be speared another one hundred times. In addition, he ordered him speared another one hundred times, if he was still not dead by the evening.
The Buddha asked Ananda, “Can you describe how painful that must have been?” Ananda said, “How can I describe it?” The Buddha said, “His pain is as small as this pebble, and the pain in hell is like a Himalayan Mountain.”
Of course, these are metaphors the Buddha used. Reality transcends our understanding. We are still unable to imagine the pain in the various hells and the pain of reincarnation. So, we should always caution ourselves through these words of the Buddha.
(to be continued tomorrow)

2

The Voice of Master Jingzong - Q and A about the Purpose of Life

Q5: Buddhism emphasizes the escape from reincarnation within the Six Realms; but, reincarnation doesn’t sound so bad to me. Life would be meaningless without birth, aging, illness, death, happiness, or sadness. If after escaping from reincarnation within the Six Realms, we don’t have any of these experiences, what is the meaning of life?
Answer:
A person who thinks like this doesn’t really understand what reincarnation is. He is like a person sitting inside a warm house, watching the wind and snow outside his window, and feeling that a snowstorm is not a big deal.
The Buddha says all living beings suffer, and reincarnation is an even greater form of suffering. Suffering is an undeniable truth in our world.
1. If you haven’t had many painful personal experiences or traumas, you may say, they’re no big deal. If you haven’t experienced aging and illness, you may say, it’s fine to grow old and sick.
When you actually experience the process of aging and illness or see a loved one go through: intestinal surgery, the insertion of a catheter, or chemotherapy, in which your mind and body will suffer from all kinds of changes one after the other. If either you or a loved one are desperate to live or die, you would not say something like that.
Furthermore, the suffering of death and illness in just this life are far less than the endless suffering of reincarnating within the Six Realms, particularly the Three Wretched Realms.
(to be continued tomorrow)

問(5):

The Patriarchal Lineage of the Pure Land School - Master Shandao

Master Honen exclusively practiced the Pure Land Path according to Master Shandao’s interpretations, and established the Pure Land School in Japan. Why didn’t he follow the teachings of the patriarchs of other schools?
It is because Master Shandao established the theology of the Pure Land School and realized Samadhi. That is why Master Honen had such high esteem and respect for him, and strictly adhered to his teachings.

Reciting the scriptures about cause and effect, is a deeper way to help us understand reincarnation, and a further way to encourage us to aspire to be reborn in the Land of Bliss. In this way it is considered a “supportive karma” and a “primary practice.” Without that, it would not be considered a primary practice.

Common Knowledge in Pure Land Teaching

102 The Abandonment of Contemplation and Establishment of Recitation

In the Contemplation Sutra, the Two Objectives (of Contemplation and Recitation) are taught. Contemplation is Abandoned and Recitation is Established.

That is to say, through the processes of manipulation, establishment and abandonment, the Sutra can be interpreted as having two objectives - the thirteen contemplations/meditative practices having one objective, and Amitabha-recitation having another.

Master Shandao says, “ in the Contemplation Sutra, the Samadhi gained through Contemplating the Buddha is one objective, and rebirth in the Pure Land through exclusive Amitabha Recitation is another. “

This is known as the “Two Objectives (of Contemplation and Recitation).”

However, it is unacceptable to have two objectives in a Sutra. It must be a process of guiding practitioners through skillful means, from pursuing the Samadhi of Buddha Contemplation to rebirth in the Pure Land through exclusive Amitabha Recitation. This reveals the concept of “ the Abandonment of Contemplation and the Establishment of Amitabha Recitation.”

At the end of the Contemplation Sutra, Shakyamuni Buddha abandons the Samadhi of Buddha Contemplation and establishes rebirth through Amitabha Recitation.

Bodhisattvas and Sravakas will see Amitabha Buddha very soon.
They will attain the perseverance of no-birth once they bow to him.
Amitabha will tell all the “children of the Buddha”
How the Land of Bliss is different from that of the Three Domains.
All those who are newly reborn or have already been reborn, wish to repay his grace.
They are speechless and can only weep with joy!
All of their seemingly endless suffering in the Land of Saha is forever eliminated.
They realize it is through the grace of Shakyamuni that they can see Amitabha Buddha.

菩薩聲聞將見佛,禮佛一拜得無生;
新往化生俱欲報,合掌悲咽不能言;

Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teaching about Impermanence

Leaving their difficult-to-carry wealth, and discarding their easy-to-take blessings, people have nothing left at the end of their lives. All they can do is cry when they come before King Yama in hell.

Continuation (5/5) of the Answer to Question 4
Some people may say, I have accomplished a great deal in my art and that has made my life quite meaningful. Another person may find great meaning in his life by serving the community. Others may find meaning through believing in God and their religion. I certainly bless them and hope they have stable lives. These are valuable accomplishments ; but, they are temporary and not the ultimate attainment for us. They don’t understand the ultimate nature of human beings or the true meaning of human life.

Voice of Master Jingzong - Q and A about the Purpose of Life

Continuation (4/5) - the Answer to Question 4
2. In our world, there are many great artists. philosophers, thinkers, remarkable poets, and writers who commit suicide. Why?
It is because they are sensitive to their spiritual minds. They constantly think about life; but, cannot find an acceptable meaning in it. Because of this dilemma, they lose their will to live and choose to die. Certainly not everyone reaches this stage, as far as deep thinking is concerned.
Some people are afraid to look more deeply, because they believe it will be too painful. If they aren’t introduced to the Buddhist teachings, they will not find the answers they so desperately need. In response they pursue more mundane activities such as planting flowers, feeding pets, or practicing calligraphy, etc.
(to be continued tomorrow)

Continuation (3/5) of the Answer to Question 4
Generally, people can be temporarily satisfied through sensual enjoyments such as eating and playing, and they think it is just fine to wander around aimlessly. They have no other pursuits or any feeling of meaningfulness, and believe there is nothing that is worth their effort. However, if they continue to search, and the conditions are favorable, they may come across a good advisor who can guide them to enter the door of the Buddhist teachings.
Once a person enters the door of the Buddhist teachings, he can truly understand the aim, meaning, and value of life. These are perfect, complete, rich and splendid. So, I hope and pray that you will look more deeply and investigate this topic. I have given you a target - seeking o and pursuing Buddhist teachings.

Continuation (2/5) of the Answer to Question 4
The greatest security in life is to learn its aim and meaning. Once we learn these, our lives have value, direction, safety, and stability. If we don't have these elements in our lives, we will suffer in confusion.
Feeling that life is meaningless need not be the end, rather it can lead us to investigate and pursue other possibilities. Those who accept this challenge, investigate further and awaken, will gain many insights on life.

Voice of Master Jingzong - Q and A about the Purpose of Life

Question 4 : Why do I feel that life is meaningless, and I have no energy or motivation to do anything? This causes me to suffer and I am always pessimistic.

Answer to Q4:

1. Throughout their lives many people have believed that life is meaningless. Some young people who lack experience may not have these feelings. However, they will sooner or later. Some people, whose lives are pleasant, think they have escaped from this suffering through their own efforts.

The Buddha taught us that life is very meaningful; but, those who are suffering have failed to discover the ultimate meaning of life. This keeps them trapped in different types of suffering, such as the suffering from non-satisfaction of their wishes.

(to be continued tomorrow)

The Patriarchal Lineage of the Pure Land School - Master Shandao

With respect to the concepts of “faith, aspiration, and practice”, Master Shandao taught us that “recitation of my Name” is both a demonstration of having faith and a way to deepen that faith in our school. What does a practitioner believe? By simply aspiring to be reborn in Amitabha’s Pure Land and exclusively reciting Amitabha’s Name, rebirth in Amitabha’s Pure Land is assured. Thus, faith is defined as believing in “aspiration” and “practice”. If faith excludes that content, it is not considered correct Faith in our School.

Master Huijing’s Short Dharma Teaching about the Classification of Teachings – the Two Practices (Primary and Miscellaneous)

Reciting the commentaries that correctly explain the Three Pure Land Sutras, written by the five patriarchs of the Pure Land School (Nagarjuna, Vasubandhu, Tanluan, Daochuo and Shandao) should NOT be regarded as Miscellaneous Practices. In addition, reading those sutras and commentaries that can help us to understand our aptitudes and the causes and effects which lead us to establish Deep Faith, is also NOT regarded as a Miscellaneous Practice.

Common Knowledge in Pure Land Teaching

101.Amitabha’s Great Vow has a Different Intent

Amitabha Buddha set forth his vows while in his causal ground, which was different from the causal grounds of all other Buddhas in the ten directions. The Infinite Life Sutra says, “ The vows I have made transcend all others. Most important among them is his 18th Vow, which transcends the vows of all of the Buddhas in the ten directions. No other Buddha made a Vow of this magnitude before. Moreover, Amitabha devoted countless eons to his practice and accumulation of immeasurable bodhisattva virtues.

Thus, the direct and circumstantial rewards accomplished by Amitabha Buddha are different from all other Buddhas in the ten directions. That is why he is called Amitabha, the Buddha of Infinite Life and Infinite Light.

Moreover, all Buddhas make general and specific vows. However, the 18th Vow made by Amitabha, is the most profound and far-reaching among all of the specific vows made by other Buddhas. This is why Amitabha is known as the Buddha of the Great Vow.

A Verse sharing Compassionate Advice and Cautions quoted from ‘In Praise of Pratyutpanna’ by Master Shandao

Though the goal of the Way seems so far away that it cannot be reached by walking, we can reach it in a flash of time.
It all depends on whether we sentient beings doubt or not. The Pure Land is just on the other side of where we are facing, without any violent obstructions in our way.
Don’t worry whether Amitabha embraces you or not. We only need to aspire for rebirth and exclusively recite Amitabha’s Name.
If we are determined to dedicate ourselves to reaching the Pure Land, the Lotus platform will naturally come to welcome us near the end-of-life.

道里雖遙不足到,彈指之間入寶池;
莫論彌陀攝不攝,意在專心迴不迴;

Voice of Master Jingzong - Q and A about the Purpose of Life

(Continuation of the answer to Q3)
Master Shandao explains, “ Amitabha-reciters are: good people, wonderful people, supreme people, rare people, the most splendid people of all.”
Taking their wisdom, knowledge, conduct, and virtues into account, Amitabha-reciters may be inferior to one who does not recite Amitabha’s name, because they have no money to donate and no house to offer people to live in.
However, their goals and the benefits of Amitabha-recitation are totally different from those of more worldly good people. That is why Shakyamuni Buddha praises them as Pundarikas (White Lotuses) among all people.
An Amitabha-recitation practitioner and a good person are like a white swan and a short-legged duck, which are not comparable. One can fly and the other must remain on earth. They are two different species. Amitabha-recitation is like a Buddha’s seed, which will certainly produce the fruit of Buddhahood.

Voice of Master Jingzong’s - Q and A about the Purpose of Life

Question 3: If we had to choose between being a good person or a practitioner, which one is more important? Is it better for us to devote our lives to becoming a good person or a practitioner?
Answer:
Being a good person or a practitioner are not in conflict ; but, which one is more important? Of course, a practitioner! This is because the goal is higher and greater, and the benefits are more splendid.
In order to be good people, we should practice the Five Precepts and the Ten Wholesome Deeds according to the Buddha’s teachings. Unfortunately, even if we do, we will still be subjected to reincarnation within the Six Realms, despite being seen as a good person.
Actually, one purpose of Buddhist cultivation is to leave the cycle of birth-and-death, which is the goal of Theravada Buddhism. However, becoming a Buddha is the ultimate goal of Mahayana Buddhism. So, these two kinds of Buddhist teachings cannot be compared.
An Amitabha-reciter who aspires to be reborn in the Land of Bliss is assured of rebirth through Amitabha-recitation. Once reborn, he is assured of becoming a Buddha. So, Shakyamuni Buddha praises Amitabha-reciters as Pundarikas (White Lotuses) among all people.
(to be continued tomorrow)

That we attain rebirth in the jeweled country, with no more births,
Is through the grace of Amitabha’s vow power.
The multitude should renounce this world together
And see Amitabha by relying on the power of his vow.
When we consider deeply we feel pain in our hearts.
We receive nothing by living in this world of hardship for countless eons.
We should greatly rejoice that we can hear the Pure Land teaching in this life!
We should dedicate our lives and strive for rebirth in the West.

得此無生寶國地,皆是彌陀願力恩;
忽爾思量心髓痛,無窮之劫枉疲勞;
