Important Knowledge in the Pure Land Teaching

187. Self-Doing, Self-Receiving; Other-Doing, Self-Receiving; Self-Doing, Other-Receiving (3 /4)

3. Self-Doing, Other-Receiving (From Amitabha's Perspective)

From Amitabha Buddha's standpoint, this causality is "self-doing, other-receiving." The vows He made and the practices He cultivated all had a single purpose: to dedicate their resulting merits and virtues to sentient beings throughout the ten directions.

Through this dedication, sentient beings receive merits with which to repay and overcome their karmic obstacles. These merits serve as provisions for rebirth in the Land of Bliss, and enable them to attain Buddhahood swiftly once they arrive there.

Worldly Examples of "Other-Doing, Self-Receiving" and "Self-Doing, Other-Receiving"

Similar examples can also be found in ordinary life.

1. The Relationship Between Parent and Child

When a father earns money and leaves it to his son, from the father's standpoint it is "self-doing, other-receiving." From the son's standpoint, it is "other-doing, self-receiving."

Conversely, when a son earns money and supports his parents, from the son's standpoint it is "self-doing, other-receiving," while from the parents' standpoint it is "other-doing, self-receiving."

(to be continued tomorrow)

187. Self-Doing, Self-Receiving; Other-Doing, Self-Receiving; Self-Doing, Other-Receiving (2 /4)

2. Other-Doing, Self-Receiving (From the Perspective of Sentient Beings)

The Pure Land School is an other-powered teaching. It is based on "another's cause and one's own result," that is, "other-doing, self-receiving." The merits and virtues accomplished by Amitabha Buddha are received and enjoyed by sentient beings throughout the ten directions.

What ordinary beings are capable of accumulating are merely karmic defilements and wrongdoings. Amitabha Buddha, however, gathered all of His perfect merits and virtues into His Great Name of Infinite Virtue and dedicated them to sentient beings as a gift.

When ordinary beings accept Amitabha's compassionate salvation in faith, and exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, they naturally acquire the necessary "condition" (pratyaya). What condition is this? It is the condition of the Buddha's power, what Master Shandao called "relying upon Amitabha’s Vow-Power."

In his Method of Contemplation and Recitation, Master Shandao explained Amitabha’s 18th Vow in 32 Chinese characters:

“If, when I attain Buddhahood, sentient beings in the ten directions, who aspire to be born in my land, and recite Namo Amitabha Buddha even as few as ten times, do not attain birth there by relying upon my Vow-Power, then I shall not attain Perfect Enlightenment.”

From Amitabha Buddha's perspective, it is "relying upon My Vow-Power." From the perspective of sentient beings, it is "relying upon His Vow-Power." As long as one recites Namo Amitabha Buddha, one naturally relies upon the power of Amitabha's merits and virtues.

Viewed in terms of cause, condition, and result:

● For Amitabha Buddha: his Vow is the cause, cultivation and practice are the conditions, and Buddhahood is the result.

● For sentient beings: recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha is the cause, the Buddha's power is the condition, and rebirth in the Pure Land is the result.

Thus, both fully accord with the Law of Cause and Effect.

To be reborn in Amitabha's Pure Land ultimately means to attain Buddhahood. Therefore, "rebirth" is actually an abbreviated expression; the complete meaning is "rebirth and attainment of Buddhahood."

(to be continued tomorrow)

Common Knowledge in the Pure Land Teaching

187. Self-Doing, Self-Receiving; Other-Doing, Self-Receiving; Self-Doing, Other-Receiving (1 /4)

Buddhism is founded upon the law of cause and effect (karma). No Dharma teaching can ever contradict causality. However, the way causality manifests differs according to the particular Dharma gate. The following discussion examines the differences between the Path of Sages and the Pure Land Path from three perspectives: the self-powered principle of "self-doing, self-receiving", and the

other-powered principles of "other-doing, self-receiving" and "self-doing, other-receiving."

1. Self-Doing, Self-Receiving (The Self-Powered Causality of the Sacred Path)

The Sacred Path is a self-powered teaching. It is based on "one's own cause and one's own result," that is, "self-doing, self-receiving." One creates wholesome causes and personally receives pleasant results; one creates unwholesome causes and undergoes painful results. Good deeds bring good rewards, and evil deeds bring evil consequences. Everything must be borne by oneself.

For example, when you eat, you become full; when you study diligently, you achieve good results. When another person drinks alcohol, that person becomes intoxicated; when another person works hard, that person receives the reward. Each individual experiences his or her own karmic results. As the saying goes, "You reap what you sow." Only after sweating and laboring in the field can one fully enjoy a joyful harvest.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Master Huijing’s Short Teaching about Pure Land Buddhism (I)

20. The Main Meaning of the Chapter on Perfect Penetration Through Mindfulness of Amitabha Buddha Can Be Summarized with Five Points:

1. It explains the principle by which mindfulness of Amitabha Buddha enables one to draw near to the Buddha, see the Buddha, and ultimately become a Buddha. The principle of this is that Amitabha remembers sentient beings, and sentient beings remember Amitabha. When Amitabha and beings mutually recollect one another, they attract each other just as magnets do. As a result, the practitioner’s "aptitude" and the Dharma ("teaching") become one reality. Amitabha Buddha and ordinary beings are no longer separated. Therefore, one can draw near to Amitabha Buddha, see Amitabha, and attain Buddhahood.

2. It also reveals Amitabha’s mind. Where is Amitabha’s mind? It is found in sentient beings who exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha.

3. This clarifies the relationship between Amitabha Buddha and sentient beings.

4. It explains the cause and attainment (the practice and realization) of Great Strength Bodhisattva (Mahasthamaprapta).

5. It shows the basis by which one attains Samadhi.

The first three points demonstrate that the Pure Land teaching is both an easy-to-practice path and, at the same time, a supremely excellent, perfect, and sudden Dharma gate.

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (I)

Answer to Q41 continued (3 /3):

For example, suppose we swallow a fragrant medicinal pill. Every breath we exhale carries its fragrance. From morning until night, countless fragrant breaths emerge, yet all of them originate from that single pill within us.

Namo Amitabha Buddha is like that fragrant pill.

Each recitation is like a breath carrying its fragrance. Even if there are millions of fragrant breaths, they all come from that one pill. Likewise, even if there are millions of recitations, they all come from Amitabha.

It is the "fragrant pill" of the Name that enables our rebirth in the Pure Land. The recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha is simply the manifestation of that Name.

It is not that we are inwardly empty and must rely on how many times we recite today, how many offenses we eliminate, how much merit we accumulate, or how much confidence we gain through our own efforts in order to secure rebirth. That is not the way it works.

Of course, for one who has accepted Amitabha's deliverance in faith, the greatest matter in the world is the grace of Amitabha's salvation. Therefore, such a person will naturally remember Amitabha and recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, while other worldly concerns gradually fade into the background.

As the saying goes:

"When thoughts of the Way are strong, worldly thoughts become weak;

when worldly thoughts are strong, thoughts of the Way become weak."

Therefore, a person who has truly accepted Amitabha's deliverance will naturally remember him and recite Namo Amitabha Buddha.

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (I)

Answer to Q41 continued (2 /3):

As for your second question, the Pure Land path is like a round-trip ticket. Once we arrive in the Land of Bliss, we will naturally return to this world to liberate sentient beings.

However, your viewpoint is that since we will still have to learn after reaching the Pure Land, we should first learn as much as possible here. This understanding is somewhat mistaken.

The Pure Land teaching is a Dharma-door that turns iron into gold.

No matter how ignorant we may be here, even if we can barely read, once we are reborn in the Pure Land our Buddha-nature immediately manifests. Infinite compassion, wisdom, vows, eloquence, hundreds and thousands of dhāraṇīs, the Three Insights, and the Six Supernormal Powers—all become fully present.

This does not depend on how much we have learned now, nor on how much knowledge we have accumulated in this life.

Therefore, if you have time now, recite Namo Amitabha Buddha and study the teachings and principles of the Pure Land path. Then, having faith yourself, help others to develop faith. This is the greatest way to repay the Buddha's kindness.

As I mentioned earlier, practice should be adapted to each person's capacities and circumstances. Those who have more time may recite more; those who have less time may recite less.

Exclusively reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha is the expression of having been saved by Amitabha Buddha; the natural outflow of faith, and the joy that arises from receiving His deliverance.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (I)

Question 41: Master, I have two questions.
First, in the past I had a fixed daily practice: in the morning I recited the Forty-Eight Vows from the Infinite Life Sutra, and in the evening I recited Chapters 33 to 37, followed by the Buddha's Name. Since I had a regular schedule of practice, what should my daily practice be now?

Second, after reaching the Land of Bliss, we will still have to return to save sentient beings. Wouldn't it be better to learn as much as possible now? If we still have to study after arriving in the Land of Bliss, shouldn't we hurry and learn more while we are here? Is this way of thinking correct?

Answer to Q41:

Regarding a fixed daily practice, it varies from person to person.

If you have the time, you may recite the Infinite Life Sutra. You may also recite the Forty-Eight Vows, or the Amitabha Sutra. However, once you understand the teachings and their meaning, there is no need to continue reciting the sutras. You may simply devote yourself to the exclusive recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha. Your morning and evening practice can consist entirely of: "Namo Amitabha Buddha, Namo Amitabha Buddha..." There is no need to recite the sutras.

The primary purpose of the sutras is to help us understand their meaning and practice according to their teachings. The main focus should be the exclusive recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha with faith in Amitabha’s boundless compassion.

For example, the Infinite Life Sutra teaches Amitabha Buddha's deliverance of sentient beings. Yet some people have recited it thousands of times without understanding what Amitabha's deliverance actually means. They do not understand the origin of Namo Amitabha Buddha, nor its principles and significance. In that case, they do not fully appreciate the very purpose for which Shakyamuni Buddha appeared in this world, and Amitabha Buddha's five kalpas of contemplation and inconceivably long ages of arduous practice. For ten kalpas he has been reaching out and seeking to save us.

Therefore, your morning and evening practices may consist of the exclusive recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha. At other times, you can read the Infinite Life Sutra or books that explain the doctrines and principles of the Pure Land teaching.

That is the answer to your first question.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Q and A about Practicing Amitabha-Recitation
Part Three - Assisted-Recitation near the End-of-Life

Question 74: Who are the people who are less likely to depart this life peacefully and at ease?

Answer:

1. Those who practice a mixture of different paths (miscellaneous practitioners).

2. Those who are lax and negligent in their practice.

3. Those who harbor doubts.

4. Those who are arrogant and conceited.

5. Those who are attached to fame and worldly gain.

6. Those with stubborn and inflexible temperaments.

7. Those who have committed many evil deeds.

Unless people of these seven types possess exceptionally deep roots of virtue accumulated from past lives, it will be difficult for them to leave this world peacefully, freely, and with ease at the end of life.

Wonderful Metaphors in the Pure Land School

Metaphor 65: A Fire without Smoke

[Master Tanluan says,] “If a person wishes to be reborn in the Pure Land simply out of a desire for the peace and happiness there, it would be like seeking waterless ice or smokeless fire. How could that be possible?”

This means that, if a person doubts the teaching of Shakyamuni Buddha regarding Amitabha’s deliverance to the Pure Land; but, still desires to be reborn in that land for the pleasure of its peace and joy, his efforts will be in vain. This is because what he seeks is nonexistent, such as ice without water or a fire that doesn’t produce smoke.

So, what do the two metaphors of waterless ice and smokeless fire illustrate? They illustrate the idea that seeking rebirth in the Pure Land without believing in Amitabha’s deliverance is futile. Just as ice cannot exist without water and fire cannot burn without producing smoke, rebirth in the Pure Land cannot be attained without believing in Amitabha’s salvation.

Logically, if one wishes to be reborn in the Land of Bliss, one must first believe in the Pure Land and in Amitabha’s deliverance. Without such belief, who would you rely on for salvation, and where could you go for rebirth? A desire for rebirth that is merely driven by personal satisfaction, rather than the faithful acceptance of Amitabha’s deliverance, is akin to seeking something that doesn’t exist.

This is why Master Tanluan says, “How could a fool who slanders Shakyamuni Buddha’s teaching possibly aspire to be reborn in Amitabha Buddha’s land?”

Important Knowledge in the Pure Land Teaching

Karmic Force, Self-Power, The Power of the Way, and The Power of the Buddha (5 /5)

Regarding "Karmic Force," ordinary beings are completely filled with it; life after life, we are driven by nothing but this karmic force.

Regarding "Self-Power," the cultivation power of ordinary beings is far too weak. Regarding "The Power of the Way," ordinary beings absolutely do not possess it.

As ordinary beings we are fully weighed down by karmic force. If we try to cultivate precepts, meditative concentration, and wisdom, our self-power is too weak to overcome our karma; nor can it lead us to the liberation attained through the Power of the Way. Therefore, we must rely on the Power of the Buddha.

Amitabha Buddha’s vows and practices are perfected, and all His merits are infused into his Name. We only need to have faith, make vows, and exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha. This will enable us to be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

Once we rely on Amitabha Buddha’s Power, we need not envy the "Power of the Way" possessed by Arhats, nor the meditative power of those sitting in meditation in mountain caves. Without relying on the Buddha’s power, even if one’s

meditative power is profound enough to reach the "Heaven of Neither Perception nor Non-Perception," one is still within the Three Realms and has not yet escaped them. However, the power of Amitabha Buddha can enable us to transcend the Three Realms, attain rebirth in the West, and become Buddhas.

Important Knowledge in the Pure Land Teaching

186. Karmic Force, Self-Power, the Power of the Way, the Power of the Buddha (4 /5)

The Power of the Buddha

"The Power of the Buddha" refers to "Amitabha’s power of salvation—through vows, practices, and fulfillment"—the power of Amitabha Buddha’s perfected vows and practices to save beings.

During His causal stage, Amitabha Buddha contemplated for five eons and made forty-eight great vows. He then underwent an inconceivably long period of practice spanning immeasurable eons. Having perfected His vows and practices, He created the six-character name of infinite light, "Namo Amituofo," through which he can save sentient beings. Although we are filled with karmic burdens and do not possess a shred of the Power of the Way, if we rely on the Power of Amitabha Buddha, we can be reborn in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.

(to be continued tomorrow)

186. Karmic Force, Self-Power, the Power of the Way, and the Power of the Buddha

(3 /5)

The Power of the Way

"The Power of the Way" refers to the "power of liberation—through subduing, eradicating, and purifying."

The first step is to “subdue greed, anger, and ignorance” through the practice of precepts, meditative concentration, and wisdom. The second step is to "eradicate greed, anger, and ignorance"; and the third step is to have "greed, anger, and

ignorance completely eradicated." Once all three steps are achieved, one can attain liberation. Only in this way can one obtain the Way, becoming a sage rather than a worldly being. This is called "The Power of the Way."

"The Power of the Way" refers to the power that sages possess when they have completely severed all afflictions, thereby achieving liberation from the cycle of birth and death. If ordinary, worldly beings possessed this Power of the Way, they would be able to subdue, eradicate, and eliminate afflictions, and thus be liberated from birth and death. However, ordinary beings only possess "karmic force" and lack "The Power of the Way." Therefore, ordinary beings must rely on "the power of Amitabha". If one lacks the Power of the Way and refuses to rely on the power of Amitabha Buddha, one is left with only karmic force, and can only fall into the various hells.

(to be continued tomorrow)

186. Karmic Force, Self-Power, the Power of the Way, and the Power of the Buddha

(2 /5)

Self-Power

"Self-power" refers to the "power derived from the practice of precepts, meditative concentration, and wisdom."

For those who believe in the Buddha, in order to counteract karmic force, one must practice—this is where "self-power" comes into play.

To what extent can we cultivate the precepts, concentration, and wisdom? As the level of our practice increases, this power also grows. Yet, one remains a worldly being. Whether one keeps the five precepts, meditates to attain concentration, or develops wisdom, one is still a worldly being. All of these practices are rooted in self-power.

We accumulate, deepen, and elevate these practices step by step. What level must we reach? We must reach a point where the self-power of these precepts, concentration, and wisdom can surpass our karmic burdens. This is like having the immense power of a great train, that we can stop and then pull back in the opposite direction. Only then is it possible to be liberated from the cycle of birth and death. As it turns out, our self-power is no match for our karmic burdens. When the karmic force is greater than our self-power, we simply continue to fall!

(to be continued tomorrow)

186. Karmic Force, Self-Power, the Power of the Way, and the Power of the Buddha
(1 /5)

Karmic Force
Karmic force refers to the binding power of greed, anger, and ignorance.

Karmic force is the power by which the greed, anger, and ignorance of ordinary beings binds us, and keeps us trapped in the cycle of birth and death. The forces of greed, anger, and ignorance hold us captive; they are the forces that drive samsaric rebirth and lead beings toward downfall. This power is extremely strong.

Every one of us is a champion of karmic force, possessing a powerful engine. Like a train that has already started moving with a loud roar—“whooo”—where is it heading? It is heading toward the three wretched realms. This is what is meant by karmic force.

Everyone, whether Buddhist or non-Buddhist, is subject to karmic force. We are all born carrying karma with us. Whether one believes in Buddhism or not, karmic force is present. What then, should Buddhists do? Those who have faith in Amitabha Buddha should recite Namo Amitabha Buddha to counteract and overcome this karmic force.

(to be continued tomorrow)

19. (4/4)

Amitabha’s mind has only one purpose, to save sentient beings. As the scripture says: " Amitabha’s mind is great compassion."

When people do not know this and do not believe it, they cannot be in accord with it. Therefore, they are not practicing in accordance with reality.

True faith consists of Sincere Mind, Single-hearted Mind, Uninterrupted Mind.

It is consistent from beginning to end, never divided, and continues uninterrupted even at the moment of death.

The One Mind consists of these Three Minds: Sincere Mind - purity and genuineness; Single-hearted Mind - decisiveness and unwavering certainty; Uninterrupted Mind - perseverance and continuity.

Thus, the Sincere Mind is pure and true; the Single-hearted Mind is free of duality; and the Uninterrupted Mind remains unchanged.

It should be understood that "mindfulness", from the Pure Land perspective, encompasses both faith and practice, and should be continuous.

19. (4/4)

淳心:純真性;

一心:決定性;

19. (3 /4)
Aspiration
In general: All of the aspirations of sentient beings, including the aspiration to attain Buddhahood.

Specifically: The aspiration for rebirth in the Pure Land. This is the foundation of all of the aspirations of sentient beings, because it fulfills everything that beings truly seek and desire.

The Dharma-Body as Suchness

The Body of True Reality is the Dharma-nature/ Dharma-body. It pervades all places and is without form.

Being formless, there is no form that it cannot be. According to circumstances and capacities, it manifests boundless forms.

True Reality is formless. It is without discriminative wisdom and without deluded knowing—that is, it is free from false conceptual attachments. Therefore, innate true wisdom becomes manifest.

Thus it is said: "Without knowing, there is nothing that is not known; without form, there is no form that is not manifested."

The Compassionate Manifestation Body

The Body for the sake of sentient beings is the body that saves and liberates them. It is the skillful-means Dharma-body and therefore possesses form.

Because the Body of True Reality pervades all places, it is able to deliver sentient beings wherever they may be.

Ignorance

In general: Ignorance refers to afflictive ignorance, all forms of ignorance, the cause of birth-and-death, karmic defilements, and passions.

Specifically: Ignorance is doubt—doubt concerning Amitabha’s Fundamental Vow and failure to understand Amitabha’s wisdom.

From the perspective of the Pure Land School, doubting the Fundamental Vow is the root of all ignorance, and the source of sentient beings' endless cycle of birth and death.

As Master Honen said - "Doubt causes one to remain in the house of birth-and-death. Faith is what enables entry into the city of Nirvana.”

19. “Just as with the meaning of the Name”: Amitabha’s Name possesses inconceivably wondrous liberating power.

If one's faith does not align with the meaning and function of the Name, then that faith is incomplete.

Amitabha-recitation ultimately removes all doubts regarding the Buddha's function of saving sentient beings. Therefore, it can dispel the darkness of ignorance and fulfill all aspirations.

To be in accord with the meaning of Namo Amitabha Buddha is called true and genuine practice. It is like accepting someone as your "Father". Before doing that you should know the father's heart. Knowing the father's possessions, one realizes that they are also the child's possessions.

If one does not practice in accordance with reality, it means that faith is not complete.

If one is not in accord with the meaning of Namo Amitabha Buddha, it means that our understanding is not complete.

When faith is joyful and one practices in accordance with reality, faith is complete. When one hears the Name and is in accord with its meaning, hearing is complete.

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (I)

Answer to Question 40 (6 /6):

There is another story mentioned in The Collected Writings of Master Yinguang.

Master Yinguang related that in recent years, the practice of Buddha-recitation had become very popular in Wuxi. There was a cook who specialized in preparing vegetarian meals. Whenever a temple held a Dharma assembly or a seven-day Buddha-recitation retreat (Fo Qi), he would often be invited to serve as the cook.

While working in the kitchen, he did not personally join the assembly in the main hall to participate in the Buddha-recitation retreat. Nevertheless, throughout the temple he could constantly hear the sound of people reciting Namo Amituofo. Thus, while carrying out his kitchen duties, his ears were continuously filled with the sound of Buddha-recitation.

One day, this cook's son was approaching death. Just before passing away, he said to his father: “Dad, Dad, I am about to leave this world; but, I cannot go to a good place. You have heard many recitations of Namo Amituofo. If you share some of those with me, I will be able to go to a good place.”

His father replied: “But I don't recite Namo Amituofo, how could I possibly have any Buddhas?”

The son answered: “Yes, you do. You have heard many recitations! If you share them with me, I will be able to go to a good place.”

His father said: “Take as many as you need.”

As soon as these words were spoken, the son peacefully breathed his last.

Afterward, the father consulted others, saying: “My son said that I had the merits from hearing many recitations of Namo Amituofo. Where did these merits come from?”

Someone who truly understood the matter explained: “You spent your time cooking for people at the temple. During those seven-day retreats, every single recitation of Namo Amituofo that entered your ears became yours. All of it is now stored within the treasury of your Alaya-consciousness (storehouse consciousness). Namo Amituofo contains his very essence. Within it are contained all the merits and virtues that he accumulated through countless lifetimes and immeasurable kalpas of practicing the Six Pāramitās and all virtuous deeds. Naturally, its merit is immense. You heard it unintentionally, yet still gained such

benefit. If you had listened with full awareness and intention, the merit would have been even greater!”

The benefits from reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha are so great because they are the crystallization of all merits and virtues. It is a “storehouse of merits” (gongde ju)—the gathering place of all merits and virtues. It is like a wish-fulfilling jewel (maṇi gem) that can produce all kinds of treasures. Namo Amitabha Buddha functions in exactly the same way.

This differs from listening to the recitation of a sutra. The passages that follow are different from those that precede them. Even if you listen attentively to someone chanting a sutra, you may not know where they are in the text or fully understand what is being recited.

Namo Amitabha Buddha, however, is different. Whether it is recited a hundred times or a thousand times, it is always: “Namo Amitabha Buddha, Namo Amitabha Buddha, Namo Amitabha Buddha...”

No matter how absent-mindedly one listens, one can still clearly hear and recognize: “Namo Amitabha Buddha, Namo Amitabha Buddha.”

Therefore, Namo Amitabha Buddha is simple and easy to receive; yet, its merits and virtues are extraordinarily great. There are many stories of this kind.

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (I)

Answer to Question 40 (5 /6):

The reason that the patient became ill and was unable to sleep may be traced to karma from past lives. It may even be that karmic creditors or adversaries from previous lives were invisibly disturbing her, preventing her from resting.

When she heard the recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha, however, those karmic obstructions were naturally eased and diminished. If karmic creditors were indeed involved, the merit and virtue of the recitations could also help dissolve those karmic entanglements and grievances.

In essence, hearing and reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha are fundamentally the same in their effect.

When we recite, the sound comes from the mouth, yet it originates from the mind. Even if our recitation is not accompanied by deep sincerity or profound concentration, the very act of reciting plants a seed within our eighth consciousness, the Alaya-vijnana (storehouse consciousness).

Recitation involves the mouth and tongue, while hearing involves the ear. Both are functions of the six sense faculties. Where do these six faculties originate? They arise from the fundamental storehouse consciousness itself. Therefore, whatever we hear enters the Ālaya consciousness. Likewise, whatever we speak—whether good or bad, wholesome or unwholesome—also becomes a seed deposited within that consciousness.

Now the sentence, “Namo Amitabha Buddha,” is the embodiment of Nirvāṇa itself. All virtues and merits are contained within it. Every merit accumulated by Amitabha Buddha throughout countless lifetimes and immeasurable kalpas of practice is fully encompassed within Namo Amitabha Buddha.

What virtue exists in the universe that is not contained within this Name?

Therefore, Namo Amitabha Buddha possesses inconceivable merit and extraordinary power.

As Namo Amitabha Buddha is heard again and again, its immense virtue and power are continuously infused into our storehouse consciousness. In this way, it is able to transform our karma.

Why? Because the basis of karma itself resides within the Alaya consciousness.

From the Buddhist perspective, karmic obstructions are ultimately empty, conditioned, and illusory in nature. The merits and virtues embodied in Namo Amitabha Buddha, however, are true and real. No matter how vast an accumulation of illusions may be, it cannot compare with even a small measure of genuine reality.

Thus, when Namo Amitabha Buddha enters through the ear and reaches the storehouse consciousness, the false and illusory karmic obstructions stored there naturally begin to dissolve and lose their power.

In the Pure Land teaching, this illustrates why hearing or reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha is not regarded as an ordinary sound or a mere religious practice. It is understood to embody Amitabha Buddha’s enlightenment, compassion, merit, and vow-power. As these qualities enter the consciousness of sentient beings through hearing and recitation, they gradually transform karmic tendencies and open the way to peace, liberation, and ultimately rebirth in the Land of Bliss.

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (I)

Answer to Question 40 (4 /6):

Let’s reflect on this example a little further.

If that patient had happened to pass away at that very moment, it is quite possible that, through the power and function of Namo Amitabha Buddha, she would have been reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.

However, because the karmic lifespan of her present body had not yet come to an end, the benefit manifested differently. She was able to fall asleep, her condition improved rapidly, and she continued living. However, if her lifespan had already reached its natural conclusion, would there not have been the possibility of liberation through rebirth in the Pure Land? This is because the inherent function of Namo Amitabha Buddha is precisely to bring about such deliverance.

Our present body is a karmic-retribution body, a body formed by the karma of past lives. Therefore, where we are born, our physical appearance, our intelligence, the schools we attend, the career we pursue, the income we earn, whom we marry, how many children we have, whether we enjoy good health or suffer illness—all of these are inseparably connected with causes and conditions established in previous lives. They are continuations of the karma we have accumulated in the past.

To use an analogy, suppose a bank passbook has become completely filled and must be replaced with a new one. The balance recorded in the new passbook does not begin from zero; it continues directly from the balance carried over from the old passbook.

Likewise, our present life is like a new passbook. Although it appears new, it is actually a continuation of what came before. The circumstances of this life are the continuation and unfolding of the karmic accounts accumulated in previous lives.

From the Pure Land perspective, when a person learns about reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha , a new factor enters this ongoing stream of karmic existence. The exclusive recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha carries the power of Amitabha’s vows and merits. If the karmic conditions of life remain, its benefit may appear as peace of mind, relief from suffering, recovery from illness, or an extension of life. If the karmic lifespan has come to its end, that same recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha will serve as the cause and condition for rebirth in the Land of Bliss. Thus, whether the result appears as continued life or as rebirth, the compassionate working of Namo Amitabha Buddha remains active and effective.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (I)

Answer to Question 40 (3 /6):

Another Example:

At the end of 1995, one of my relatives was hospitalized in Tainan. One afternoon, I went to visit this relative. As I entered the room, a patient from the neighboring ward followed me in. She was a woman about forty years old, yet she looked more like fifty or sixty. The area around her eyes was dark, her face was drawn and exhausted, her voice weak and feeble, and she walked very slowly. She appeared to be at the point of collapse.

When she came in, someone brought her a chair to sit on.

She told me that she had not slept for an entire week. It was not that she did not want to sleep—she simply could not fall asleep. This made her feel extremely miserable. Being ill and unable to sleep, she had naturally become very weak and looked almost lifeless.

I said to her, “You should recite Namo Amitabha Buddha. If you do, you will be able to sleep.”

She replied, “In my condition, how can I possibly recite?”

I said, “If you cannot recite, that is all right. In a little while I will get a Buddha-recitation device for you. Just listen to the recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha, and you will be able to fall asleep.”

I quickly obtained a recitation device and told her to lie down in bed and simply listen to it. After that, I returned home.

The following afternoon, I went again to visit my relative. As soon as I entered the room, I saw that the patient from the neighboring ward was already sitting there. She was chatting and laughing with everyone around her. Her complexion and appearance were completely different from the day before. She looked healthy, radiant, and full of energy.

She thanked me and said: “Yesterday I lay in bed and, because I was afraid of disturbing others, I put the earphones from the recitation device into my ears.

Before I knew it, I had fallen asleep. I slept for a very long time, and when I woke up, I felt completely refreshed.”

Just think about it: for seven days she had been unable to sleep at all, yet upon hearing the recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha, she fell asleep.

From that day onward, whenever she lay in bed, she listened to the recitations of Namo Amitabha Buddha. Even when sleeping, she continued listening to the recitations. Gradually and almost imperceptibly, her condition improved very rapidly, and within only a few days she was discharged from the hospital.

This example illustrates that the sound of the recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha can bring peace and stability to both body and mind. Even when a person is unable to recite personally, simply listening to Namo Amitabha Buddha may calm mental agitation, relieve distress, and promote physical and emotional well-being. In this way, the compassionate benefit of the recitations works naturally and quietly in the lives of those who hear it.

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (I)

Answer to Question 40 (2 /6):

Let me cite a few examples.

In Shalu Township, Taichung County, Taiwan, there was a man suffering from terminal cancer. He had never practiced Buddhism. After being admitted to the hospital, he was placed in the intensive care unit, where the most critically ill patients are monitored around the clock by nurses.

His cancer had already reached its final stage. As is often the case with terminal cancer, he endured severe pain. At times he would cry out in agony; when he was not crying out, he would still groan in distress.

His family invited Dharma Master Xinguan to visit him. When the Master came, he brought along a Buddha-recitation device. He also introduced to the patient the splendor of the Land of Ultimate Bliss and the compassion of Amitabha Buddha.

After speaking with him, the Master left the recitation device beside the bed and turned it on, allowing the sound of Amitabha’s Name to play continuously for him to listen to quietly.

Although the patient was suffering greatly in both body and mind and was unable to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha himself ; but, whenever he heard the recitations, his suffering seemed to lessen. He became calm and peaceful.

After approximately a day and a night, he passed away serenely and quietly.

Of course, since we do not possess supernatural insight, we cannot know for certain whether he attained rebirth in the Pure Land or where he went after death. Nevertheless, this incident shows that simply hearing the recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha can relieve physical and mental suffering. Moreover,

without a prolonged period of agony, he was able to pass away peacefully within a short time.

This demonstrates the inconceivable compassionate power contained within Namo Amitabha Buddha. Even when a person is unable to recite, or understand deeply because of illness and suffering; merely listening to the recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha can bring comfort, tranquility, and ease at life's final moment.

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (I)

40. Question: In the story you mentioned, beings in hell heard the six-character Name of Amitabha Buddha and were immediately reborn in the Land of Bliss. Are there also cases in our human world of people attaining rebirth simply through hearing the Name? Please explain.

Answer to Question 40 (1 /6):

The rebirth of those hell-beings into the Land of Bliss was personally witnessed by a Brahman woman. She saw them leave hell, seated upon lotus flowers, and depart for the Pure Land.

Then, are there people in our world who attain rebirth through hearing the Name? There certainly should be.

If such cases occur, they would most likely take place at the end of a person's life. Whether that person had practiced Buddhism throughout life is a separate matter. What is crucial is that, at the moment of death, he or she hears the Name of Amitabha Buddha and thereby attains rebirth.

This is because the Name possesses the inherent power and function, to bring all who hear it and entrust themselves to it, to rebirth in the Land of Ultimate Bliss. The six-character Name, “Namo Amitabha Buddha”, is not merely a sound or a symbol; it embodies Amitabha Buddha’s fulfilled vow-power and saving virtue. Therefore, hearing the Name, awakening faith in it, and receiving its compassionate calling, become the direct cause for rebirth in the Pure Land.

Q and A about Practicing Amitabha-Recitation
Part Three - Assisted-Recitation near the End-of-Life

73 Question: What kinds of people are able to depart from this life peacefully and freely, with ease and composure?

Answer:

Quite often, it is those who are socially humble, simple, unlearned, and gentle-hearted. They are often the most sincere in their exclusive recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha, and unconcerned with drawing attention to themselves. These are the ones who pass away most auspiciously.

In summary, there are six common types:

1. Those who practice diligently and without slackening

Examples include Dong Ziming and Zheng Xibin, as recorded in Records of Nianfo Responses and Rebirth Experiences (Vol. 3).

2. Those who are simple, humble, and unpretentious.

Examples include Master Xiuwu and the Venerable “Cauldron-Leak Repairer”, both well-known for their plain and honest characters.

3. Those who cultivate quietly and deeply without seeking recognition An example is Madam Zhang of Qingdao.

4. Those who are compassionate, gentle, and soft-hearted.

Examples include Madam Ma of Quanyang and an elderly woman from Tainan.

5. Those who possess a strong sense of renunciation

An example is Master Yingke, whose earnest longing to leave this suffering world, inspired him to attain rebirth through wholehearted practice.

6. Those who have deep wholesome roots from past lives.

An example is the elderly Mr. Hu of Qianjiang.

These examples suggest that an auspicious and peaceful passing is often associated not with worldly status, intellectual brilliance, or outward accomplishments ; but, with qualities such as sincerity, humility, perseverance, kindness, simplicity, faith, and wholehearted reliance upon Amitabha Buddha. Such people tend to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha with an undivided heart and are therefore more readily able to depart this life with peace, confidence, and freedom.
