Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (II)

Answer to Q45: (continued 2 /3)

There is another point. Children have eyes as clear as glass. From the time they are little until the present, their eyes are like cameras, recording the conduct of their parents through body, speech, and mind in their memories. Thus, they grow up watching their parents’ behavior.

Confucius said: “When his own conduct is upright, he acts without being ordered to do so; when his own conduct is not upright, even if he is ordered to act, he will not follow.”

He also said: “If the son takes the lead in upright conduct, who would dare not be upright?”

If we conduct ourselves properly and uprightly, we will naturally influence others. This is why living examples are more important than verbal instruction. In raising children, leading by example is especially important. If we ourselves have not conducted ourselves properly and merely lecture and admonish our children with words, the effect will naturally be much weaker.

Of course, children have their own blessings and their own karmic obstacles. There are some karmic obstacles that, no matter how spiritually exalted their parents may be, the parents cannot influence them. At such times, we rely on the power of Amitabha, and this is why we should diligently recite Namo Amitabha Buddha.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (II)

Question 45: Although I myself have deep faith in the law of cause and effect, and often listen to your guidance, I have been developing a deeper faith concerning spiritual practice; the cultivation of the Way, and karmic cause and effect. Yet I often worry about my family members, especially since my mother is already in her nineties. I hope to dedicate the merit of my Amitabha-recitation to her.

However, a fellow practitioner believes that I should first dedicate the merit to overcoming my own karmic obstacles, establish my own spiritual attainment , and only afterward dedicate merit to other family members. May I ask the Master what is the correct way to understand this?

Answer: The reason your view differs from that of your fellow practitioner is that there is not yet a correct understanding of merit-dedication.

Merit-dedication does not mean that if you recite ten thousand times today, or recite however many times, those recitations can only be dedicated to one particular person, as though there would be no merit left to dedicate to anyone else. It is not like that at all.

Even a single recitation of Amitabha’s Name can be dedicated to hundreds, thousands, or millions of recipients. It can be dedicated to: our karmic creditors, those with whom we have karmic grievances, our ancestors, children, relatives, sentient beings with whom we have karmic connections, as well as those with whom we have no apparent connection.

When making the dedication, however, we should focus on the matters that are of particular concern to us. For example, in the case of your mother, you can speak specifically of your wish for her to have faith and aspire for rebirth. In the case of your children, you can express your wishes for their upbringing—whether they can conduct themselves uprightly and honorably, and whether they can inherit and carry on our religious faith.

There is no need to elaborate on everything. Simply mention the matters that are of special concern to you. Then, at the end, recite:

“May this merit be equally dedicated to all,

that they may awaken the Bodhi-mind,

and attain rebirth in the Land of Bliss.”

Everything is included within this dedication.

There is a saying: “When a person is sincere, the Buddha responds. When a person has a wholesome aspiration, Heaven will surely honor it.” Another saying goes: “Where there is a vow, there will be a karmic connection.”

As long as we have that sincere and earnest wish for the other person’s well-being, Amitabha knows it. He will do his utmost to fulfill our aspiration. If our wish cannot be fulfilled exactly as we hoped, then even so, a heavy karmic retribution may be lightened and borne in a milder form. Amitabha is working silently and invisibly within all of this.

Therefore, after making our dedication with sincerity and reverence, we should simply entrust everything to Amitabha—to Amitabha's arrangement and Amitabha’s working.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Q and A about Practicing Amitabha-Recitation
Part Four - The Mindset and Practice in Daily Life

Question 78: Why is it that I feel more at ease when I am not reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha; but, as soon as I start reciting, I become agitated and uncomfortable, and no longer wish to continue? Does this mean that my spiritual capacity is not suited to Amitabha-recitation?

Answer: On the contrary, this is precisely proof that you are benefiting from Buddha-recitation and that you are well suited to practicing it!

For example, some people enjoy playing mahjong, watching sports, or playing online games. They can sit there for an entire night without feeling tired; in fact, they may feel even more energetic. This is because they are indulging their deluded thoughts.

However, when they recite Namo Amitabha Buddha for a while, they may feel uncomfortable , uneasy , or become inwardly restless. This is because Amitabha Buddha is gathering in and restraining their deluded thoughts. It is like putting reins on a wild horse for the first time. Naturally, the horse does not feel free and will want to resist.

The deluded thoughts in our minds are also like a wild horse. Apart from the Other-Power in Amitabha Buddha’s Name, there is no other power capable of subduing them. Therefore, we should persist in reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha. With continued practice, our deluded thoughts will naturally become tamed, just as a wild horse eventually becomes a well-trained steed.

If we do not recite Namo Amitabha Buddha and instead follow the wild horse of our deluded thoughts wherever it runs, it will carry us straight to the hell realms.

Wonderful Metaphors in the Pure Land School

Metaphor 69: Surrendering

In Master Yinguang’s Collected Works, it is also said that: “Surrendering means becoming a loyal subject. If someone who has slandered the Dharma thinks that he cannot attain rebirth even if he subsequently repents, he totally misunderstands the guiding standard for Buddhist practice, and its principle.”

This is like an enemy surrendering and becoming one of our own people. As long as one repents and recites Namo Amitabha Buddha, one can attain rebirth. If a person cannot do so, then what would be the point of speaking about Buddhist practice at all? This is the gist of Master Yinguang’s words.

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (I)

Answer to Q44 : (3 /3)

But what if, at the end of life, illness or pain makes one unable to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha? Can one still be reborn? Certainly.

Master Tanluan once said: If a person merely hears of the purity and peace of that Land, and firmly resolves to be reborn there, that person will also attain rebirth and immediately enter the assembly of those whose rebirth is already established.

This means that the decisive cause of rebirth is not one's ability to recite Namo

Amitabha Buddha at the very last moment; but, the settled aspiration and faith that have already been established. Once a person has sincerely resolved to leave this world of suffering, aspired for rebirth in Amitabha's Land of Bliss, and entrusts oneself to Amitabha's deliverance through the exclusive recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha, rebirth is assured. This is so even if illness at the end of life makes verbal recitation impossible.

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (I)

Answer to Q44 : (2 /3)

As for whether, while reciting, he has a complete understanding of Amitabha's deliverance, that is no longer essential. His rebirth is assured because he already fulfilled the conditions for rebirth: renouncing the Saha World, aspiring to be reborn in the Land of Bliss, and exclusively reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha.

Otherwise, people often abandon the practice halfway. For example, someone may be told that this Name is wonderful—that simply by reciting it one can eradicate karmic obstructions, and increase blessings and wisdom. However, because such a person does not earnestly seek liberation from birth-and-death, when illness or adversity arises, he stops reciting. Once he stops, the karmic connection is, in a sense, interrupted or weakened.

The Amitabha Sutra says:

If there are good men or good women

who have already made the vow,

who are now making the vow,

or who will make the vow,

all of them will attain non-retrogression

toward Anuttara-samyak-saṃbodhi.

They have already been reborn, are now being reborn,

or will be reborn in Amitabha’s Pure Land

This means that, once one genuinely aspires to be reborn, one's rebirth is immediately determined. If it is not yet determined, it is because the necessary causes and conditions are still incomplete. If one is not presently reborn , then upon aspiring in the future, one will certainly be reborn.

That is why the sutra says, "they have already been reborn, are now being reborn, or will be reborn." Those who have already made the vow, have already established the conditions for rebirth. Otherwise, one can make the vow now and attain rebirth now. Whether sooner or later, rebirth is certain. Hence, the sutra speaks of those who "have already made the vow, are now making the vow, or will make the vow," corresponding to "have already been reborn, are now being reborn, or will be reborn."

The issue is not whether one will be reborn, the real issue is whether one has this aspiration. Once one truly wishes to leave the Saha World and be reborn in the Land of Bliss, one will naturally recite Namo Amitabha Buddha.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (I)

Question 44:

Master, you once told the story of a Brahmin and his wife who recited Namo Amitabha Buddha together. Why did the Brahmin still fall into hell despite his practice? Please explain?

Answer to Q44 : (1 /3)

Perhaps, although he recited Namo Amitabha Buddha, he did so reluctantly or merely as a formality.

Even though he fell into hell, he had nevertheless recited Namo Amitabha Buddha. Therefore, under the appropriate conditions, the Name would inevitably manifest its power. Just the fact that he recited Namo Amitabha Buddha revealed the influence of Amitabha’s power upon him and his wife. Although he was not immediately reborn in Amitabha's Land of Bliss, the compassionate function of the Name nevertheless revealed itself.

It is also possible that this was Amitabha Buddha's compassionate arrangement —that he first went to hell so that, through the power of the recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha he could bring deliverance to even more beings there. Afterwards, he was allowed to return to the human world to recount this story; so that all who heard it would be deeply moved to begin reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha themselves, and pass the story on to others.

The account of his experience is recorded only in this brief form. It does not explain all the causes and conditions before and after the event. Therefore, we can only make such inferences.

We know that the recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha enables those who recite it to be reborn in Amitabha's Land of Bliss. If this Brahmin was not reborn there immediately, there must have been various reasons.

The reason such a person exclusively recites Namo Amitabha Buddha is that he has a clear motivation and purpose. That motivation is nothing other than to renounce the suffering of the Saha World and aspire to rebirth in the Land of Bliss.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Q and A about Practicing Amitabha-Recitation
Part Three - - Amitabha-Recitation Near the End-of-Life

Question 77: How should we understand and balance the relationship between daily Amitabha-recitation and assisted recitation near the end of life?

Answer to Q77:
We should think in this way: I am a person who recites Namo Amitabha Buddha. When the time of death arrives, even if there is not a single person present, Amitabha Buddha will certainly come; leading the ocean-like assembly of pure bodhisattvas to welcome me.

However, when the time comes to repay and bid farewell to this Saha World, if fellow practitioners come to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha and help me on my journey, it is indeed a most excellent and noble occasion. It helps reduce worldly distractions and brings mutual encouragement, comfort, and joy among lotus friends.

Furthermore, if it is for oneself, one should diligently engage in the exclusive recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha, rely on the power of Amitabha's Fundamental Vow, and be assured of rebirth in the Land of Bliss. One should not place one's hope for rebirth upon receiving assisted recitation at the time of death.

If it is for others, however, then when someone is approaching the end of life, one should make every effort to go and provide assisted recitation and compassionate comfort.

Metaphor 68: Recovery from Illness

In the Collected Works of Master Yinguang, there is this saying: “If a person slanders the Dharma; but, later realizes his serious offence and repents [by reciting Amitabha’s Name], he can still attain rebirth in the Pure Land. This is like recovering from an illness and becoming a healthy person.”

Here, Master Yinguang emphasizes that even those who have slandered the Dharma, which is a grave transgression, can still be reborn in the Pure Land. This is provided that they repent and rectify their evildoing [by exclusively reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha]. This is akin to a patient who has recovered from an illness and is now fit and well again.

Master Huijing’s Short Teaching about Pure Land Buddhism (I)

22. The Samadhi of Amitabha-recitation does not involve stages of spiritual attainment, nor does it proceed step by step through graded levels. In a single leap, we directly enter the Tathagata's Dharma-gate of Ultimate Reality (True Suchness).

As it is said: "It eradicates the deluded thoughts accumulated over countless kalpas, without passing through Asaṃkhyeya eons to attain the Dharma-body."

The Great Treatise states: "Samadhi is simply a Dharma in which the mind is in accord. Dharani is also a Dharma associated with the mind; yet, it also has an aspect not dependent on the mind. This mind-independent aspect means that, when a person has heard and upheld the Dharani, even if anger arises in the mind, it is not lost. It constantly accompanies the person, just as a shadow follows the body."

The Samadhi of Amitabha-recitation is: neither sudden nor gradual, neither provisional nor ultimate, neither meditative concentration nor distraction. Truly, it is a wondrous and inconceivably Great Way.

The Samadhi of Amitabha-recitation is, for all sentient beings:

● A medicine for those burdened by evil karma,

● Protection for those who have broken the precepts,

● A guide for those who have strayed from the path,

● Eyes for those wandering in blindness and darkness,

● Wisdom for the foolish and ignorant,

● And a lamp for those dwelling in darkness.

Clarifying Doubts About the Pure Land (I)

Question 43:

Master, for a person whose faith remains unwavering, who has already been embraced and never forsaken by Amitabha Buddha’s unceasing light, and whose rebirth is decisively settled here and now, does such a person still need assisted recitation at the end of life? Is it still necessary to leave instructions for family members concerning end-of-life arrangements?

Answer to Q43:

Certainly, for one who entrusts with faith, aspires to rebirth, and exclusively recites Namo Amitabha Buddha, rebirth is already assured. There is no need to wait for assisted recitation, or rely upon assisted recitation in order to attain rebirth.

Those of us who exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, regularly associate with Dharma teachers, and fellow lotus friends; when the time of death arrives, it should be a lively and warm occasion, not one in which a person faces death alone. At that time, lotus friends may gather together for a final farewell. The dying person will also deeply feel that having received Amitabha Buddha’s deliverance is an immeasurably great blessing. Thus, for every remaining moment that the physical body is still alive, one naturally wishes to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha a few more times in gratitude for the Buddha’s boundless compassion and grace.

When lotus friends join together in reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha at the bedside, it is itself a truly noble occasion. Moreover, it is not uncommon for extraordinary and inconceivably auspicious signs to appear at the time of death. If many lotus friends are present, rejoicing in the person's rebirth, such auspicious signs can inspire faith in those who have not yet believed.

Often, a single auspicious sign can be more effective than years of Dharma lectures. People may listen to teachings for many years and still not believe; but, when an auspicious sign manifests before their eyes, they may find it impossible not to believe.

Q and A about Practicing Amitabha-Recitation
Part Three - - Amitabha-Recitation Near the End-of-Life

Answer to Q76 : (continued)

The warm yet dignified atmosphere created by the recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha, not only brings comfort to the dying person; but, also helps ease the sorrow of separation felt by family members. More importantly, it nurtures their wholesome Dharma roots and strengthens their faith. Thus, it guides them to aspire for birth in the Pure Land, through the exclusive recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha.

Quite a number of people have come to believe in Buddhism and practice Buddha-recitation; after being deeply moved by the benefits of the Dharma, when fellow lotus friends came to recite for their deceased family members.

For the lotus friends who participate in assisted recitation, it is likewise a valuable opportunity to offer compassion and loving care, while experiencing firsthand the

truth of impermanence. They will also witness Amitabha Buddha’s great compassionate deliverance in action, and deepen their appreciation of the Buddha’s grace.

Q and A about Practicing Amitabha-Recitation
Part Three - - Amitabha-Recitation Near the time of Death

Question 76:
Although I recite Namo Amitabha Buddha in daily life, I am afraid that I may not be able to attain rebirth in the Pure Land. Can I arrange in advance for fellow lotus friends to come and assist with recitation at the time of my death?

Answer to Q76 :
Yes, you may arrange in advance for fellow lotus friends to assist with recitation. However, you should not think, “My rebirth through Nianfo is uncertain during ordinary times; only with assisted recitation can I attain rebirth.”

Rather, you should firmly believe: “Whether or not there is assisted recitation, one who recites Namo Amitabha Buddha in daily life will definitely attain rebirth.”

Nevertheless, due to the limitations of ordinary human feelings, a person at the end of life will naturally experience some loneliness and isolation. If family members neither believe in nor recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, they may handle matters according to worldly customs. They may be unable to understand the feelings of a Nianfo practitioner and act contrary to that person's wishes. This is always regrettable.

At such a time, if fellow lotus friends come and recite Namo Amitabha Buddha together, one will feel greatly comforted and warmly supported. After all, they share the same faith, recite Namo Amitabha Buddha , and will be reborn in the

same Pure Land in the future. Their bond is already close, and becomes even closer. To accompany one another at life's final moment, through the recitation of Namo Amitabha Buddha, is a source of deep consolation and joy for both parties.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Wonderful Metaphors in the Pure Land School

Metaphor 67: The Joy of the Third Dhyana (continued)

Those who commit the five gravest transgressions or slander the right Dharma deserve the greatest retribution, and should fall into Avici Hell when they are on the verge of death. However, if they recited Namo Amitabha Buddha, they are reborn in the Pure Land at once, thereby avoiding these painful karmic consequences. The lotus flower buds appear when they are about to fall into hell, and they are reborn inside the buds. Although there are three kinds of obstacles within the flower buds, the joy they experience there is still like entering the Third Dhyana.

Master Shandao contrasts the extreme differences in joy and suffering in the Saha World to encourage us to seek rebirth in the Pure Land. What he means to tell us is that we should know that even in our lotus-palaces, we will experience joy comparable to the Third Dhyana, and our life in the Pure Land will always be better than that of beings who suffer the unspeakable torments in Avici Hell for countless eons.

The text from the Nirvana Sutra is specially adapted and the reason for its adaptation is shown. Therefore, he says, “You ought to know”.

Accordingly, what exactly is it that we should know? The answer is: the fact that, as long as we are reborn in the Pure Land, even if we have to stay in our lotus-palaces for a period of time, we will still be filled with joy as pleasant as the bliss experienced by meditators in the Third Dhyana. Besides, even if our lotus buds do not bloom for many kalpas , our life there will definitely be much better than that of beings in Avici Hell, who can only experience endless suffering and pain.

As a matter of fact, when even sacred beings [such as the Great Bodhisattvas Manjusri and Samantabhadra] seek rebirth in the Land of Bliss, there is all the more reason for defiled beings to do so. No matter how we look at it, aspiring to rebirth in the Pure Land only benefits us. It is all pros and no cons.

Wonderful Metaphors in the Pure Land School

Metaphor 67: The Joy of the Third Dhyana

What kind of joy can those who are reborn in the Pure Land [at the lowest level of the lowest tier] experience? Master Shandao, referring to the Nirvana Sutra, compares it to the profound sense of inner peace and happiness in the Third Dhyana, as experienced by a meditating Bhikhu.

The Infinite Life Sutra also describes the joy felt by this category of beings in the Pure Land, likening it to the spontaneous bliss experienced in the Trayastriṃsa Heaven. What did Master Shandao mean to tell us when he referred to the Nirvana Sutra instead of citing the Infinite Life Sutra?

The twenty-first chapter of the Nirvana Sutra describes the Land of Immobility, a Buddha world where the fragrance of flowers brings blissful joy to its inhabitants. This passage may be the basis for Master Shandao’s viewpoint. The Land of Immobility is a world of profound joy that delights both the body and mind, much like the Third Dhyana.

The greatest joy in the Saha World is the joy of the Third Dhyana, while the most severe pain is the suffering in Avici Hell.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Clarifying Doubts about the Pure Land (I)

Answer to Q42: (3 /3)
Can any of us truly practice perfectly? No, we cannot.

Among us, the person with the deepest cultivation should be Dharma Master Jing'an. He once attained uninterrupted pure mindfulness (sustained

concentration) in Buddha-recitation, and even experienced the same mindfulness in dreams as in waking life. Yet he still felt uneasy about rebirth. It was only after deeply accepting Amitabha's saving vow that he became truly settled, secure, and at peace. Thus the name "Jing'an" ("Pure Peace") suited him perfectly.

In fact, that name is equally fitting for every one of us, because Amitabha Buddha wants us to attain great peace of mind. He declared:

When I attain Buddhahood, I shall universally fulfill this vow:

For all who are fearful, I will grant deep peace and security.

May I quickly attain Perfect Enlightenment in this world,

and uproot the very source of the painful cycle of birth and death. In other words:

"I wish to attain Buddhahood as quickly as possible; so that, I may swiftly remove the root cause of the sufferings of birth and death for all beings throughout the ten directions."

What is the greatest fear of sentient beings? It is the fear of impermanence. When impermanence arrives, one may fall into the lower realms, even into hell. What could be more terrifying than that?

Yet, Amitabha Buddha wishes to give us peace and security. He wishes to eliminate our fears. Therefore, among all teachings, only the Pure Land path is able to bestow upon us the deepest and most complete peace of mind in the face of every fear.

Clarifying Doubts about the Pure Land (I)

Answer to Q42: (2 /3)

If one thinks, "If I become unconscious and cannot recite Namo Amitabha Buddha at the moment of death, then I cannot be reborn.” This is a form of self-power within Other Power. In other words, one is relying on one's own ability and merit, dedicating that merit toward rebirth, and hoping that Amitabha will come to save you. That is not the true meaning of our Pure Land teaching.

Therefore, in the Pure Land path, rebirth is settled now. Right now, we are already one with Amitabha Buddha. On the one hand, Amitabha's life is within our hearts; on the other hand, our lives are within Amitabha's heart.

Amitabha's heart is light. Amitabha's light "illuminates the lands of the ten directions without obstruction." Which beings are embraced by that unobstructed, infinite light? It embraces those who exclusively recite Namo

Amitabha Buddha. All beings who thus recite, dwell eternally within the light by which Amitabha embraces them. Therefore, living within His light now, at the moment one dies one is reborn in His Pure Land of Infinite Light.

Only the Pure Land teaching is something that ordinary people in this present life can truly practice. Moreover, among the eighty-four thousand Dharma gates, it is the supreme teaching. Therefore, the Pure Land path is a perfect and sudden Dharma gate.

The six-character sentence ("Namo Amitabha Buddha") contains all merits and virtues in their entirety—this is its perfection. The moment one exclusively recites Namo Amitabha Buddha with true faith is the moment one's rebirth is settled—this is its suddenness. Therefore, it is called a perfect and sudden teaching.

Furthermore, it is easy to practice. Its attainment is exceedingly lofty, and all who truly rely upon it can attain rebirth. Such is the Pure Land teaching.

If it were otherwise, it would no longer be the Pure Land teaching.

No matter how inferior a being you may think you are, and no matter how difficult it is for you to practice, you can still receive Amitabha Buddha's salvation. In fact, Amitabha's salvation was originally intended precisely for beings who are unable to practice effectively on their own.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Clarifying Doubts about the Pure Land (I)

Question 42: I have always had a concern. No one can guarantee that he will be able to maintain right mindfulness and exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha at the moment of death. Physical pain may still be bearable; but, what if I become unconscious or confused? Then wouldn't all my years of Buddha-recitation have

been in vain? This causes me a great deal of anxiety. Please give me your guidance.

Answer: The Pure Land teaching is that one receives Amitabha Buddha's salvation here and now. Even if, at the end of life, one is suffering from illness and pain, unable to recite Namo Amitabha Buddha, or even becomes unconscious; one nevertheless remains forever within Amitabha's saving embrace, and within the light by which Amitabha receives and never abandons sentient beings.

Those who recite have already been saved. Therefore, whether one is conscious or unconscious at the moment of death, whether one can recite Namo Amitabha Buddha or not, is no longer the decisive issue. Rebirth has already been settled. Thus, even if one breathes one's last under such circumstances, one is immediately reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.

What does it mean to be saved by Amitabha? It means receiving Amitabha's true and genuine salvation, which breaks through our inner doubts and anxieties. From the moment we entrust ourselves and accept it in faith, we are embraced within Amitabha's light and never forsaken. Even if we become unconscious, we are still embraced and never abandoned.

At the same time, Amitabha's life is present within our hearts and never departs. We and Amitabha Buddha are united as one. Therefore, regardless of when, where, or under what circumstances death occurs, one will be reborn in the Land of Bliss.

(to be continued tomorrow)

Q and a about Practicing Amitabha-Recitation
Part Three - - Amitabha-Recitation Near the End-of-Life

Question 75: What kind of practitioner is able to know in advance the time of his or her death? How does one come to know it beforehand?

Answer: There are two kinds of people:

1. Those who have accumulated deep merit through exclusively reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha.

2. Those whose wholesome roots and virtues from past lives are especially profound.

Such people may come to know the time in advance while in meditation, in a dream, during the very act of reciting Namo Amitabha Buddha, or through being

informed by Buddhas or Bodhisattvas.

They may also learn it without being told by anyone. When the time arrives they may naturally know it themselves.

To outsiders, this may seem miraculous or extraordinary. To the person involved, however, it is quite ordinary—just as plainly evident as seeing an object before one's eyes.

Wonderful Metaphors in the Pure Land School

Metaphor 66: Parental Love

The 18th Vow contains two aspects of Amitabha Buddha’s deliverance of sentient beings. The first one is the “Embracing Way” by which Amitabha receives and delivers sentient beings who exclusively recite Namo Amitabha Buddha . The second one is the “Prohibiting Way” which stipulates that we must not commit any of the five grave offenses or abuse the Right Dharma.

These two approaches sum up parental love which is innate, heartfelt, and spontaneous. While parents love their children in an “embracing” and loving manner, they know that a young child can be ignorant and make mistakes. If they overindulge the child, do not teach him correct behavior, or do not prohibit him from doing wrong things, the child will never see the error of his ways. He will grow up to be a person of flawed character. Based on their own experiences, parents set limits so that their children learn what behaviors are unacceptable. The parents would say, “you must not do this,” or “this is absolutely forbidden because it is a grave offense. We love you dearly as our own flesh and blood; but, if you are defiant and commit serious wrongs, we will have no choice but to expel you and break off our relations.” This is what is meant by the ‘Prohibiting Way’. True parental love requires both loving kindness and wise pre-emptive warnings.

However, would parents truly abandon their child or sever ties with him over a transgression? The Answer is “no.” This is merely an expedient tactic and does not reveal the parents’ true intentions.

It is inconceivable for a loving father to say, “My son, I love you, so it’s okay if you do something evil.” It’s also unthinkable for the father to be happy if the son goes astray, and for their relationship to improve as a result. However, this doesn’t mean that the father will sever ties with his rebellious son after warning him against wrongdoing. The father will always treat his son with compassion and kindness, in the hope that the child will grow up to be not just someone who possesses good moral character; but, a person who is wise, compassionate and able to guide others towards enlightenment.

Amitabha Buddha wishes that all ordinary beings become sacred beings, and we should acknowledge his compassionate intentions to save sentient beings. He not only hopes for us to abandon evil and cultivate virtue; but, also to seek the refuge of his deliverance.

However, we must not mistake his deliverance as a justification to engage in wrongdoing. Therefore, the pre-emptive Prohibiting Way is just an expedient measure and does not result in permanent exclusion. Only by truly understanding the dual aspects of parental love can we appreciate Amitabha’s wisdom and compassion, and the great effort he makes to deliver sentient beings.

Suppose one day the child really makes a mistake. The father punishes him by making him stand outside and not allowing him to enter the house. Yet, at dinner time when it’s dark outside and it’s about to rain, the mother goes outside to comfort him and says, “Child! You must understand your mistake. Such things are unacceptable. It’s dinner time now, you should confess to your father and promise not to do it again.”

Important Knowledge in the Pure Land Teaching

187. Self-Doing, Self-Receiving; Other-Doing, Self-Receiving; Self-Doing, Other-Receiving (4 /4)

2. Charitable Giving

When a philanthropist gives aid to the poor, from the philanthropist's standpoint it is "self-doing, other-receiving." The poor person may not have personally created the causes through self-effort, yet receives and enjoys the resulting benefit. This is "other-doing, self-receiving."

From the perspective of Mahayana Buddhism, this embodies the spirit of self-sacrifice and selfless dedication—always considering the welfare of others and putting into practice the Bodhisattva ideal:

"May all beings be freed from suffering; may I seek no comfort for myself alone."

Mahayana Buddhism is the Bodhisattva Path. Without the other-powered causality of "self-doing, other-receiving" and "other-doing, self-receiving," the Mahayana teachings could not be established.
